Walter SIMPSON born 26 October 1923 Takaka The family history of Archibald SIMPSON and Ethel PAGE Ethel (not present) Page born 09 December 1880 Wakapuaka. Her parents were William Page Farmer age 40 years born Leicester England who married 04 April 1865 Wakapuaka to Caroline Louisa Henrietta Page formerly Manson age 39 years born Hamburg Germany. William Page Farmer of Wakapuaka the father registered the birth on 15 January 1881. (Reference RGO NZ birth registration 1881 folio 452 item 17 Nelson district) At Wakapuaka on the 09 December 1880 Ethel PAGE was born. Her father William registered her birth the following year on 15 January 1881. Ethel’s mother Caroline was 39 years old and her father 40 years old at the time of her birth. She was their ninth child. Ethel started at Clifton Terrace School on the 04 April 1887 at the age of 6 years 4 months. She passed through standards I to VI between 188 and 1894. The last day at school for Ethel was 20 December 1894 when her destination upon leaving was stated as Home. Although Ethel turned 21 in 1901 she did appear on any Electoral Rolls for the years 1902 and 1905. I found Ethel’s future husband on the 1905 Nelson Electoral Roll with his occupation stated as Plumber living in Wellington Terrace Nelson. On 08 November 1906 Ethel PAGER age 24 occupation Domestic Duties married Archibald SIMPSON aged 23 years occupation Plumber. The Rev James H MACKENZIE married them at his residence in Nile Street Nelson, the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church. The witnesses at the wedding were C E MACKENZIE of East Nile Street Nelson (possibly the minister’s wife) and F E GALEY of Easy Nile Street Nelson. I have no idea who F E GALEY was as no occupation was given, so this person could have been either male or female. Ethel and Archibald Simpson compiled by Lynly Lessels Yates updated March 2009 1 Manssen family in New Zealand www.lynly.gen.nz/index.htm Archibald was born on the 14 January 1883 at Bell Grove Waimea South Nelson. His parents were James SIMPSON occupation Express Driver and Janet SIMPSON formerly THOMPSON. His birth registration showed his father as a Stoker born about 1839 in Fifeshire Scotland and his mother born about 1847 in Scotland. James and Janet were married on 03 September 1880 in Nelson but I have been unable to find this record. It is not clear when James and Jane came into New Zealand. Please refer to Simpson miscellaneous document at the end of this document for new information about Archibald’s parents and siblings. The 1908 and 1911 Nelson Electoral Rolls had Ethel SIMPSON living in Stoke, occupation married while Archibald was still living at Wellington Terrace Nelson occupation Plumber. Ethel was C/- F LILEY Waimea Road in the 1914 Nelson Roll and Archibald was stated as living at Flat Creek. Frederick LILEY was married to Ethel’s older sister Bertha. At long last they were together on the 1919 Motueka Roll living at Hamana where Archibald’s occupation was stated as Farmer. Then on the Nelson Roll of 1922 Archibald was back in Wellington Terrace with his occupation now stated as Labourer, but there is no sign of Ethel on the Roll. Kawai Street Nelson had Ethel and Archibald recorded together on the Nelson rolls from 1922 until 1935. Archibald SIMPSON aged 54 years passed away on the 15 September 1936 and was buried on the 15 September at Wakapuaka Cemetery Nelson. Ethel and Archibald had 10 children and the youngest was only 13 years old. The couple had been married for 2 months short of their 30th wedding anniversary. Times must have been very hard for Ethel being left with such a large family to bring up on her own. Some of her children were married but there were many still living at home. Ethel continued to live at Kawai Street, Nelson and was on the Nelson Rolls from 1938 to 1946 as widow. Ethel Simpson age 79 years Widow died 06 August 1960 at Public Hospital Nelson from Nayland Road Stoke. Cause of death was Bronchopneumonia – 48 hours – Gross congestive heart failure – 3 months – Pleural effusion – 3 months as certified by Dr P G Hurst who saw her last on 06 August 1960. Her parents were recorded as William Page occupation mixed Farmer and Caroline Louisa Henrietta Page formerly Manson. She was buried on 08 August at Nelson by Church of England minister K Tutt. Ethel was born in Wakapuaka and married age 24 to Archibald Simpson in Nelson. Her living issue were 2 males age 51 & 37 years and 8 females age 52, 49, 47, 45, 43, 41, 40 & 30 years. W Bishop Funeral director of Nelson registered the death on 09 August 1960. (Reference RGO NZ death registration 1960 folio 3663 item 254 Nelson district) Ethel passed away at the Nelson Public Hospital on the 06 August 1960 aged 79 years. She was buried on the 08 August along side of her husband Archibald at the Wakapuaka cemetery in Nelson. Rev K TUTT an Anglican minister took the service. Her last address on her death certificate was stated as Nayland Road Stoke. Ethel and Archibald SIMPSON left one of the four largest branches of the MANSSEN family. Memories of my parents Ethel PAGE and Archibald SIMPSON by their son Living Male SIMPSON Ethel and Archibald Simpson compiled by Lynly Lessels Yates updated March 2009 2 Manssen family in New Zealand www.lynly.gen.nz/index.htm Ethel PAGE was a gentle, motherly and strong willed person. In her very active 79 years she raised a family of ten children, through difficult times was a loyal partner to Archibald – in all leading a full and busy life. Her childhood was spent in the Nelson area as the PAGE family resided in Wakapuaka. Ethel became a pupil of Clifton Terrace School in the 1880’s. I believe her teenage and adult years were dominated with working on her parent’s diary farm near Todd’s Valley. It was 1906 when Ethel married Archibald SIMPSON, a son of James and Janet. The news of their day would have revolved around the reign of King Edward VII, Joseph WARD as Prime Minister and New Zealand moves to become a Dominion. My parents raise ten children in all, supported by Dad’s earnings as a plumber. Steel worker (Onekaka), Farm Labourer and a caretaker of Barnicoat House Nelson Boys College. Archibald was a placid and loving father. He enjoyed showing his leghorn hens at local poultry shows, watching Seddon Shield Rugby marches and processing his own tobacco. Together Archibald and Ethel fashioned family homes, initially in Nelson, Rai Valley, Takaka and finally Kawai Street Nelson. In line with the times we lived a happy, fugal life as a family. We visited our neighbour’s house to listen to the radio and walked to many places, such as a visit to tend graves at Wakapuaka cemetery. As my parents never owned a car, a special treat for us all would be a train trip to Richmond or Wakefield to visit relations. In September 1936 on a day my brother Reg and his family were visiting my father died. He had been tidying up the garden and suffered a sudden heart attack. As I was 13 years old and not allowed to attend the funeral, I was looked after by the WARINGS (who owned a store on College Hill) while the service was being held, while my sisters Violet and Joyce were sent to Aunt Alice’s in Wakefield. From that time my mother was left with the prospect of little money and the weight of hard times. No harm came to us as Mum was thrifty and hardworking. She often pinned what savings she had to the inside of her coat – not daring of course to part with it – even if it was a hot day. I never forgot the strong will and determination my mother had. She often walked from Nelson to Richmond to visit family. In fact three months before she died and in her 79th year, she walked from Richmond to Hop to help my wife, Rona, who was laid up in bed with the measles and a sick baby – unsuitable bus times could not stop her. Sadly after an attack of pneumonia and a fall from bed, she passed away in August 1960. I now treasure the part both parents played in passing on the wisdom of their years, and the love and care given us over difficult times.
