April 2017
Message from the Principal
Dear Hudlow Parents and Families,
In April, students across the state are participating in the AZMerit assessment. The questions on these tests
demonstrate mastery of the AZ College and Career Ready Standards. It is important that students try their very
best to show how much they really know. TUSD is administering Computer Based Testing.
We need your help to make sure our students perform well on these important tests. Please do not schedule any
appointments on testing days. If students leave early, their test is invalid. If they arrive late, they will be held until
the next session begins. Encourage your child to attend school every test day and to have a positive attitude about
learning and test-taking. You are going to want to use a highlighter on your paper copy of our calendar to know the
dates! Since the mastery tests reflect overall achievement, the more effort and energy put into learning, the better a
student will do on these tests. Make up tests will be given outside the regular classroom.
I cannot stress enough how important it is for your child to be here each and every day, on time, and for your child to
remain the full day. Please do not plan to check your child out early during this week.
Thank you very much for your support and cooperation!
Respectfully,
Cheri LaRochelle, Principal
We encourage parents and children to read and talk about the test-taking strategies listed below:
Getting Ready…



Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Students need 8-10 hours of sleep.
Eat a healthy breakfast. This will give your brain the energy it needs to do your very best.
Come to school on time and with the tools that you need. Do you need your glasses or medication? We will start promptly at
8:00 AM. Students arriving late will not be able to join the class until the next subtest.

Have a positive attitude.
Knowing What To Do…

Listen to all the directions.

Read each passage and question carefully and all of the possible answer choices. Some passages are long and they require stamina!
Students can get up and stand behind their chair to stretch and get back to it. Do not just go down and click on answers to finish
early.

Try to eliminate some of the answer choices. Which ones do not make sense?

If you have a question about how to do something on the computer itself, ask the teacher.
The Test…

You will be working on your own during the test and it helps to figure things out on scratch paper. Use the paper provided to
write down problems to solve. No one can do it all in their head and it is easy to make an error if you don’t check and show your
work.

The test questions are in random order. Some will be hard and some will be easy. Even if they seem hard, keep going. You can do
the easy ones first and go back to do the rest. The computer will prompt you to go back if you missed some!

The answers are not in a pattern. Do not try to mark a certain number of A’s, B’s, C’s, or D’s, or feel that one answer choice would
not be correct if you used it on the question before. Some questions will require you to choose more than one answer!

As you finish a section, go back and try some of the problems again. Checking your work means really rechecking, not just
looking at it.

fine arts and technology.
$1 ‘Fun’daisers support Field Trip buses for Hudlow. Each bus is $150.00. Thank you for supporting such
a little thing for a BIG payoff!
Our PTA exists because of a dedicated few individuals! Please consider joining a meeting, or volunteer for
an event, or take on a leadership role as an officer. Your efforts directly impact your child’s school! We are
planning now for next year’s executive board.
