“DID YOU KNOW” Thomas Jefferson High School October 2014 Current Highlights • • • • CIS rewarded perfect attendance students with a free entrée coupon from Smashburger! Every 6 weeks, students can earn a free burger, chicken sandwich, or salad at Smashburger for perfect attendance. 12 CIS students volunteered at Salvation Army at 4am on a Sunday to help feed the homeless. 16 CIS juniors and seniors visited AT&T corporate headquarters to learn more about STEM jobs. CIS will be moving downstairs to Room 161. Special Initiatives Enrichment Corner • • • CIS and New Connections are working together to provide pregnant/ parenting students with life skill workshops. The Gay and Straight Alliance (GSA Club) had its first meeting. Students from all backgrounds are welcome to attend and the club will be held every Thursday after school in the CIS Room. • Check out our CIS clubs: • Anime Club on Tuesday • Chess Club on Thursday • GSA Club on Thursday Check out the Job Board, which is updated bi-weekly. This is a great resource for students. Success Story Goals Accomplished /Challenges • • TJHS now has 55% of the school connected to Parent Portal. CIS now has 124 students that receive services and participate in enriching activities on a regular basis! School Committees • • • • Earlier this month, the Dallas Police Department gave a special presentation on drugs and alcohol to all school staff and faculty. CIS has coordinated with 7 community agencies for the Drug Awareness Festival. CIS will assist with the Being Me, Drug Free Festival on November 8th. Adriel T. is an 11th grader who was recommended to the CIS program for classroom conduct issues. Not only has he improved in the classroom, but he has also become a very active in anime club and has even attended a CIS field trip. He is a good example of a student who works hard to make positive changes. Parenting Corner • • CIS attended the Parent/ Teacher Conferences on October 13th and met with numerous parents and families. CIS looks forward to working with the college program ASP (Academic Success Program) to plan informative college and career workshops for parents and students. Upcoming Events • CIS will be taking the students who volunteered at the Salvation Army to a Dallas Mavericks game as a reward! • Wells Fargo will be talking to students in Mrs. Snell’s Money Matters class about “Getting Smart About Credit”. They will also be returning next semester to speak more about the topic. • Every Friday in November, New Connections will be meeting with students during 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd period to provide parenting workshops. “DID YOU KNOW” Thomas Jefferson High School September 2014 Current Highlights • • • • Parent Portal is going well and TJHS is only 10 parents shy of hitting 50%! CIS is off to a great start with the Chess Club, Anime Club, and Leadership Group! The CIS Room now has two interactive activities for students: The Positive Quotes Locker and Brainteasers! There is a Job Board in the cafeteria that is updated bi-weekly by CIS. This is a great resource for students! Special Initiatives Enrichment Corner • • • • The Leadership Group has been meeting every Wednesday and has covered topics such as verbal and non-verbal communication. CIS will be working with Mrs. Watkins to provide “Lunch Bunch” to pregnant/ parenting students. Students are eligible for a raffle based on attendance. • Chess Club and Anime Club are in full swing! Every Tuesday, the Anime Clubs meets in the library to learn about Japanese culture and film. Every Thursday, the Chess Club meets in the CIS room to perfect their chess skills. Success Story • Goals Accomplished /Challenges • CIS attended a service agency fair at Brookhaven College this month. A few students will begin volunteering at TJHS this next month! Xenia T. is a strong, unique young lady who is determined to succeed in all that she does. She participates weekly in Chess and Anime Club and is not afraid to talk to new people. Although she has obstacles in her life, she always tries to stay positive and to focus on the future. Parenting Corner School Committees • • CIS will serve on the Guidance Committee for the counseling center. CIS has coordinated 5 community agencies for the Being Me: Drug Awareness Festival. • • CIS has worked with several parents and families through home visits, in-person conferences, and phone conferences. CIS looks forward to working with the college program ASP (Academic Success Program) to plan informative college and career workshops for parents and students. Upcoming Events • Compliments of Smashburger, 200 students who have perfect attendance for the 6 weeks grading period will get a coupon for a free burger/ sandwich! • CIS has reached out to the Dallas Police Department, and they will be facilitating a drug education and awareness presentation for all staff and teachers. “DID YOU KNOW” Thomas Jefferson High School August 2014 Current Highlights • Ms. Mendez and Mr. Maldonado have been very busy getting to know new teachers and staff members here at Thomas Jefferson High School. • CIS has helped connect hundreds of parents and students with Parent Portal! To date, Parent Portal has nearly 50% of TJ students signed up! • CIS has been meeting with TJ staff to brainstorm and plan programs and events for the school year! Special Initiatives • CIS is planning an enriching leadership group to help mold our future leaders. • CIS is working with a school counselor to develop a peer tutoring/ mentoring group. Goals Accomplished /Challenges • CIS has assisted the school with registration and has successfully signed up over 200 parents for Parent Portal! • TJHS’s Parent Portal percentage is nearly 50%!
