VERSAILLES TURNS TO CENTRAX
FOR ENERGY
In the French city of Versailles, famous for its palace to the south-west of Paris, one of the most
prestigious and high profile sales made in recent years by Centrax has been successfully installed
and commissioned.
The site provides district heating for Versailles and is
operated by Verséo, a subsidiary of COFELY part of
GDF SUEZ who purchased a Siemens SGT-400powered generator set from Centrax.
The new package replaces an older competitor’s unit,
as part of the renewal of Verséo’s purchase
agreement with EDF.
With an output of 11.9 MWe, this upgraded high
efficiency plant supplies some 40% of the town's hot
water through a waste heat boiler in addition to
producing electricity that is sold to French power
utility EDF.

It was critical that the Centrax package was installed
and commissioned within the agreed time to allow
Verséo to meet its contractual obligations to supply
heat to its users for the start of the winter heating
season in France.
The Centrax CX400 package was formally opened by the President of Verséo Mr Damien Terouanne and Cofely General Manager
Pierre-Yves Dulac on 18 October 2012. The Deputy
Mayor of Versailles, François de Mazières and other
officials, together with representatives of Verséo,
Siemens and Centrax attended the ceremony at the
site.
The new installation is re-using the existing HV
transformer, boiler and much of the ductwork to reduce
the overall project cost.
Following excellent collaboration between the teams
of Verséo, Centrax and Siemens, the unit was installed
and commissioned within a very tight timescale and in
early November it was started and has successfully
completed a 10 day industrial run to prove its reliability
while in commercial operation.
Simon Cooper, Sales Director of Siemens Industrial
Turbomachinery Limited, said “The Verséo project is
Celebrating the opening of the new installation: Guy West, Director Gas Turbine
an extremely significant project for both Siemens and
Division; Pierre-Yves Dulac, General Manager Cofely and Simon Cooper, Sales
Director of Siemens Turbomachinary Ltd.
Centrax and as such I was very honoured to be present
at the site opening. This project is an excellent example of the high levels of experience and capability that Centrax can offer and of
the overall energy solutions that Centrax and Siemens are able to provide to the market place”.

ITALIAN CUSTOMER PLACES ORDER FOR CX400 UNIT
Centrax has recently won an order to supply its second CX400 generator set powered by the
12.9 MW Siemens SGT-400 gas turbine.
The order has been placed by the Italian energy management company Fenice and will be installed at the Huntsman
Tioxide plant in Scarlino, 100km south of Florence. Huntsman is a major producer of speciality chemicals, employing
12,000 people worldwide. The Scarlino
plant produces titanium dioxide which is
used as a pigment in paint and other
products.
Fenice is a significant energy
management company which is now
owned by EDF.
Fenice evaluated the project based on
the complete package offered by Centrax
and the long-standing relationship
between the two companies. A long-term
maintenance contract is also included.
Another EDF company, Power Support,
based in Madrid, will perform the
engineering of the plant and Fenice will
own, operate and maintain the
equipment.

Centrax Director Guy West said:
“We have a very good relationship with Fenice, which is based on selling and supporting their existing Centrax
generator sets in Italy. They praised our dedication, commitment and professionalism in winning this order.”
The Centrax package will be delivered to the site for outdoor installation towards the end of next year.
DALKIA BUYS GENERATOR SET FOR DISTRICT HEATING PLANT
Centrax has sold a CX501-KB7 package to the French contract energy management company
Dalkia for installation in their district heating plant at CUB near Cenon, Bordeaux in France.
The 5 MW indoor unit has replaced an older Turbomeca TM5000 set which has reached the end of its 12-year
EDF contract. Operators are required to make a substantial investment in equipment in order to obtain a new 12year contract. The newly installed package produces energy to supply the heating network for the surrounding
area and the 5 MW of electricity produced is fed into the local grid.
The Centrax unit is using the same boiler and a large part of the ductwork and other equipment to reduce
installation costs. Centrax and Dalkia have worked together on many projects over the years and our successful
relationship with them was a big factor in winning this project. Also, we were the preferred supplier of the
equipment because we had already been servicing the Turbomeca generator set for several years.
CENTRAX TO SUPPLY PAPER MILL IN ROMANIA
A CX501-KB7 generator set has been sold to S.C. Loial Impex S.r.l. who will be installing it for cogeneration for
their customer, PEHART TEC S.A. , which is a paper mill in Petresti in the Alba region of Romania.
The paper mill is one of the biggest in Romania
and the thermal energy from the turbine will be
used in the papermaking process at the site.
The CX501-KB7 generator set will be supplying
up to 5.38 MWe which will also be used on site
with the excess exported to the local electricity
grid.

SCOTTISH HEALTH CAMPUS WINS TOP AWARD
NHS Grampian has won a highly prestigious
energy award for its new Centrax-powered
energy centre at the Foresterhill Health Campus,
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland.
NHS Grampian won the Combined Heat and Power
Association’s Public Sector Award and were the clear
winner in their category. The Annual Awards Dinner was
held on 15 November 2012 in London.
The Foresterhill Health Campus is served by a new
energy centre that integrates a Centrax generator set for
CHP plus a biomass boiler and three further dual fuel
boilers to provide heat and around 90% of the electricity
requirement of the site.

FIRST BARGE ON COURSE FOR COMPLETION
A major step forward has been made recently with the launch of the first barge hull designed for a
power generation role being built by ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard) in Bahrain.
The barge is being prepared to receive two Centrax Trent gas turbine-powered generator sets which will be mounted on
the hull as a floating power station with a capacity of some 125 MWe.
The Power Barge 125 is a joint development between Centrax and ASRY and is designed to meet a broad range of
power generation requirements and provides the flexibility to be positioned rapidly.
Commercial applications include the provision of temporary power supplies during the construction phase of new landbased coastal power stations, enabling plant operators to sell power well in advance of the new plant's commissioning.
The barge also ensures continuity of power supplies during major outages at existing power plants near estuaries,
rivers or coastal locations.
Power barges can also provide emergency power in times of need, and humanitarian and relief initiatives around the
world could also benefit enormously.
The barge was launched at the ASRY shipyard in Bahrain, October 2012.

CENTRAX PEOPLE
LOCAL CHARITY BENEFITS AGAIN THIS YEAR
Continuing the tradition of giving to charity instead
of sending Christmas cards, Centrax is delighted to
once again donate money to FORCE Cancer
Charity.
This donation has been a great success and has proved very
popular with our customers and suppliers over the past few
years.
The amount donated is more than the cost of cards, postage
and handling combined, and has the added benefit of
reducing our carbon footprint and helping the environment.
FORCE Cancer Charity’s work includes financing
improvements in patient care through research and the
purchase of advanced equipment.

joining dump truck subsidiary Heathfield Engineering as a
fitter. He then joined the Gas Turbine Division and worked
on Centrax CS600 generator sets and some of the earliest
CX501-powered packages.
In the late 1980's he moved to the newly created turbine
repair department under Mike Bryant and worked on the
repair and overhaul of the Rolls-Royce 501 range.
Trevor has been working on the assembly of KB7 boost
modules for several years at Newton Abbot and continues
his valuable work for Centrax today. He and the team
recently completed the 300th boost module.
