“Can you help me?”
“Will you tie my shoe?”
“Can you carry my backpack? It’s heavy.”
“How do you do this?”
Kids often ask for help and we often “help” them. Sometimes we “help” them even when they
don’t ask for help. We just do things for our kids because we love them. Here’s something to
think about:
Are we also loving our kids when we don’t help them? The answer is often yes. Maybe we
just need to redefine the word “help”.
“I know that backpack is heavy but it’s yours and I know you can do it. If we need to take a
break or walk slowly, we can do that.”
“Cross the laces to make an X and put one lace under the other. I’ll take over from there.
Look! You are half-way to learning how to tie your shoes!”
“Before I respond to your question, do you want my brain to grow or do you want to grow your
own brain today.”
“Great question! What do you think?”
“Give it a try. You might mess up but so what. You’ll learn how not to do it and you may get
it on your next try.”
You can do things for your kids that help them in the moment or you can do things that help
pave the way for future success. Sometimes, being the biggest help to your child doesn’t look
or sound like help at all (but it is).
