BODØ - YOUR FIRST PORT OF CALL
– NORTH OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
Bodø is an exiting cruise
destination eager to be
discovered. Although a
major port of call for the
Norwegian Coastal Steamer,
Bodø has not pursued
the cruise industry and is
therefore thrilled to finally
be able to present Bodø as
a cruise destination. We can
accommodate virtually all
cruise ships and offer a great
variety of shore for all ages,
all group sizes and all activity
levels.
Among shore highlights
is the world famous
Saltstraumen – the world’s
strongest maelstrom with
a visible presence of an
exiting stone age heritage;
the old Kjerringøy trading
post is beautifully located
in a stunningly scenic
landscape, and is one of
Norway’s most important
cultural heritage monuments
from the 19th century; the
Norwegian Aviation Museum
– Scandinavia’s largest and
most modern.
It is our objective to make
Bodø the port you will enjoy
visiting – again and again, as
you seek new markets for your
cruise ship experiences or for
your yacht vacations.
Being located in Northern
Norway’s second largest
town, with a major airport
with one-stop connections to
most gateways in Europe, and
the northernmost end of the
Oslo-North Norway railroad,
Ingvar M. Mathisen
Port Director
Port of Bodø
Bodø is a great location
for both guests in quest of
adventures surrounded by
fantastic nature, as well
for logistics purposes as
resupplying by air, rail or sea.
We look forward to presenting
our cruise ship destination,
one like no other, on the
following pages, and will
be more than happy to
answer any questions, like
possible guest experiences
or operational and logistical
matters with you or your
representatives at any time.

THE COMPLETE NATURAL EXPERIENCE NORTH
OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
The perfect port of call offers the widest range of choice.
Bodø cruise port is such a port of call. The urban town of
Bodø offers wondrous Arctic experiences, magical nature
and culinary delights, all right outside our door here in the
exotic north. We have the natural resources around us to help
create unforgettable adventures.
Here you’ll find some of Norway and Europe’s most famous attractions: Saltstraumen - The world’s strongest maelstrom, during a 6-hour
period, 372 million cubic metres of seawater pass through a 150 metre
wide and 31 metre deep channel.
The old Kjerringøy trading post is beautifully located in a stunningly
scenic landscape, and is one of Norway’s most important cultural
heritage monuments from the 19th century. This living history museum gives you a unique insight into the coastal culture of Northern
Norway.
Just a 5-minute drive from the Cruise Port, you’ll find the Norwegian
Aviation Museum. It is Scandinavia’s largest and one of the most
modern in Europe.
Furthermore, the Bodø region is home to the largest colony of
European Sea Eagles in the world.
If you are seeking the thrill of speed, we recommend a trip in an open
ocean RIB boat right from the quayside.
Do you dream about catching the “big one”? Here your dreams can
come true! Saltstraumen is a paradise for ocean fishing, especially
for pollock. The world’s largest rod-caught pollock was caught in
Saltstraumen, weighing 22.7 kg/50 lbs. Saltstraumen is an angler’s
paradise! The combination of excellent fishing close to the shore, local
hospitality and the sense of freedom will make your stay an unforgettable experience and give you a lifetime of stories to tell. The Bodø
region is one of the most fascinating areas in the world - with a wealth
of history and unspoiled nature.
Whether you are looking for spectacular nature, the contrasts of
settlements dating back to the Stone Age with modern culture, outdoor
activities, or simply want to experience life in this exotic part of the
world, you will find it all here in the Bodø region. It is possible to combine different excursions, and all trips include necessary equipment,
such as warm flotation suits, headgear and gloves for the RIB boat
excursion customers.
The people living north of the Arctic Circle are very friendly and
open-minded. You will find it easy to make contact with the locals,
especially since language skills in general are very good – English
is spoken as a second language almost everywhere.

TOUR 1
City Sightseeing in Bodø
Bodø is a perfect fusion of the modest and grandiose. It is both urban
and rural at the same time. The town is surrounded by nature’s
beauty including scenic jewels, small fishing villages and mountains.
Bodø is an excellent place for fascinating nature or culture-based
activities and a perfect base for adventures and excursions.
In order to get to know Bodø, we recommend a trip around the town
centre and surrounding areas. You will see a lively city centre as you
walk along our charming seaside promenade where fresh fish and
shrimp may be bought during the high season. We will take you on a
walk through the area of town known as the “Swedish town”, as it was
reconstructed with help of our Swedish neighbours after the city was
bombed in 1940. You will be told the history of Bodø from its induction as a city in 1816 until the present day.
Some other attractions we will visit: The Nordland Museum. The
museum is located in one of the oldest classic architectural buildings
in Bodø, dating from 1903. A permanent exhibition called Our
Town (”Byen vårres”) tells us how Bodø grew to become a city and
how people have lived their lives here since 1816. The multimedia
show completes the exhibition. The museum also offers exhibitions
about the Sámi and a collection of silver finds dating from Viking
times.
We also visit the quayside. This is a lovely walk both in sunshine and
rain! The area has been chosen as Norway’s best and loveliest marina.
If you reach the end of the pier you will encounter a pleasant
café which is a landmark in itself, called Molokroken.
We will also drive past the many churches in town before driving up
to Rønvikfjellet, a mountain that offers a lovely view of the whole city,
Landegode Island and Lofoten can be seen in the distance.

Excursion to Kjerringøy old trading post
– one of Nordland’s most beautiful sites
Kjerringøy Island is known for its beautiful landscape and well-kept
historical trading post. The excursion takes you to one of Northern
Norway’s most visited destinations; the magnificent historical trading
post of Kjerringøy.
The old trading post of Kjerringøy is beautifully located in a stunningly scenic landscape, and is one of Norway’s most important cultural
heritage monuments from the 19th century. The historical site’s fifteen
authentic buildings are owned and run by Nordland museum, and are
fully preserved in their original state, even with original interiors and a
large archive. The merchants business had its heyday in the late 19th
century, and the wealth was made from fish trade. Cod and herring
was shipped from Northern Norway to Bergen and Kristiansund, and
exported to the international markets. Fish was Norway’s most important export from the Middle Ages until the oil-era.
Photo: Nordlandsmuseet/Ernst Furuhatt
The living history museum gives you a unique insight into the coastal
culture of Northern Norway. Here you can see and experience
how everyday life was lived by the gentry, fishermen and servants in
Nordland at the end of the 19th century, and how the export of fish
brought cultural impulses from central Europe to the far north.
Tour description
The trip starts with bus from the pier to Kjerringøy trading post, traveling through a scenic landscape with steep mountains, azure seas and

Deep sea fishing & dining on board in Saltstraumen,
The world’s strongest Maelstrom
Among anglers who know the pleasure that a rod and reel can bring
Saltstraumen is said to be the greatest fishing paradise in Europe.
Saltstraumen will excite your wildest dreams about catching the
biggest fish. Saltstraumen, the world´s strongest tidal current, rises
every six hours when enormous masses of salt water (about 400 million cubic meters) pass at speeds up to 20 knots through a 3 km long,
150 m wide sound, between Saltenfjord and Skjerstadfjord.
This powerful current brings enormous amounts of krill, which
in turn feeds rich schools of pollock, cod, catfish, redfish and halibut.
Saltstraumen holds the record for the largest rod-caught Pollock,
weighing an amazing 22.7 kg/50 lbs! The area can also boast of many
other fishing records, the last of which was the capture of an Atlantic
wolf Fish weighing 17,6 kg/38,8 lbs. The skipper of your fishing boat
will take you to the best fishing sites in the area. After the fishing trip,
the catch is prepared on the boat, for a wonderful fresh meal before
returning to your cruise ship.

Boat trip to Saltstraumen Maelstrom
Get ready to visit the strongest tidal current in the world –
Saltstraumen by using fast going RIB.
Four times a day, 13 billion cubic feet of water are forced in and out
through a passage 150 meters wide, 3 km long and only 25 meters
deep. This is all because of the difference between high and low tide
in this area of Norway. When the current is at it`s strongest the speed
could reach approx. 15 knots. This is just spectacular and a great
photo opportunity.
On this exiting journey through the wild landscape there is a good
chance to observe sea eagles and observe parts of the Caledonian
Folding Belt, a range of mountains dating back over 250 million years.

The Norwegians are proud of their outdoors activities; there is a lot
of it! The area around Bodø is especially well known for its peaceful
woods surrounded by the sea on 3 sides and with views of the majestic
Børvasstindan Mountains towards the south.
You can join us for a guided walk through these woodlands. Just a few
minutes outside the city there are plenty of paths where you will follow
small streams, walk over quaint wooden bridges and at the same time
meet some of the friendly locals!
According to a study, 92% of the population used the Bodø countryside during the summer. In the winter, the land is frozen but that
doesn’t stop the Norwegians! We will be walking on pathways but
sometimes during winter it can be slippery so we will supply you with
spikes to fit on your shoes and walking sticks if necessary.
During the trip we will pass many cultural landmarks such as Viking

Trip to the majestic Saltstraumen maelstrom
Magic Saltstraumen is situated in a spectacular building at the foot of
the Saltstraum Bridge, close to the world’s strongest tidal current.
Inside this spectacular building, Saltstraumen’s hidden and exciting
stories are brought to life and form the basis for, and give rise to, many
adventures, both culinary and through photographs and films. There
is also a small souvenir shop if you want to take home a reminder of
your visit.
The daily ebb and flow of the tide through the narrow strait linking
Saltfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden generates incredibly strong currents
in the swirling water. The rich occurrence of fish that feed here and
the dangerous currents have provided fertile ground for settlement,
culture and myths for the past ten thousand years and a veritable treasure trove of cultural relics surround Norway’s third oldest documented
settlement. The Viking chieftain Raud den Rame (Raud the Strong)
lived in the area and is described in the saga of Snorre.
Norwegian salmon are to be on display in the outdoor pool, with
information about Norwegian fish farms and salmon exports an
essential feature. Around the centre, visitors can wander in the
beautiful landscape with 6km of surfaced nature trails with plenty
of places to stop and rest.
The world’s largest pollock was caught by a fisherman’s rod in the tidal
current, and cod and wolffish are often caught here by sports fishermen. Large numbers of seabirds overwinter and feed here. Salten has
the densest population of white-tailed eagles anywhere in the world,
and the majestic bird can be seen flying over Saltstraumen daily.
Saltstraumen was recently chosen as one of The Wild Wonders of
Europe because of its impressive marine life and the wild currents.
Experiencing Saltstraumen at its height is a dramatic experience!
Saltstraumen itself is situated within walking distance, just 100-150m
from the building.
Here, you can watch an awe-inspiring film of the depths of the world’s
strongest tidal current, which will leave a lasting impression on you.
The film will give you a visual experience of brightly coloured sea anenomae and sea cucumbers in pink, green and orange, sea fans, bubble
gum corals, dead man’s finger corals, breadcrumb sponge and sea
lilies which filter their food from the nutrient-rich water. There are two
coral reefs with stony corals and a coral reef with horny corals here.
In other words, a film that shows the natural wonders of a unique
underwater environment.
People flock to Norway from around the world to experience the
country’s incredible scenery and wildlife not just the phenomenon that
is Saltstraumen!
It is said that many more people come to experience the Northern
Lights. In the cinema, you can watch a documentary on the Northern
Lights. This documentary examines fascinating myths, history and
facts through amazing film footage and images. Most cultures have
legends about the polar light, passed from generation to generation.
It takes viewers on a journey through myths, faith and supernatural
beliefs.
The film explains about the sun in simple terms, and using animations
from NASA shows how the Northern Lights are formed, where to
go in order to see them, how we can predict them and how you can
take wonderful photographs of them. The film ends with a time-lapse
sequence from Ole C. Salomonsen, one of the world’s best Northern
Lights photographers.

OTHER FEATURES OF INTEREST:
Bodø is the capital of Nordland, and is located strategically by the
entrance of the massive Vestfjord, close to Saltenfjord which contains
the world’s strongest tidal maelstrom, and surrounded by beautiful and
accessible mountains.
Bodø has a population of 50 000, with a busy airport, sea and rail
terminals. Bodø is a transport hub for much of Nordland and Northern Norway.
Nowadays, the relations to nearby Russia are of a friendlier nature, but
much of the Cold War history can be viewed at the National Aviation
Museum located less than five minutes by bus from the pier. Bodø
also hosts one of the two Norwegian Search and Rescue Centres,
ambulance aircraft and modern Search and Rescue helicopters on
24/7alert, that are specially equipped and trained for Arctic and
all-weather Operations. Crews regularly train in the Spitsbergen
region.
MILITARY HERITAGE
During the 1960s the air base was developed into NATOs most
important air force base in the Northern region. Jet fighters from Bodø
were regularly the first ones to intercept and identify naval vessels
and aircraft from the Soviet Northern Fleet as they headed out to the
Atlantic.
Although now a peaceful city with several colleges and a university,
Bodø is mindful of its military heritage as a NATO outpost, and
the majority of the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s F-16 jets are still
stationed here. Bodø also proudly hosts annual NATO exercises of
various sizes, giving citizens and visitors a rare glimpse of activities
normally performed at distant locations.
The Cold War made its mark on the city of Bodø, with occasional
suspicious visits by foreign trawlers bristling with aerial antennae,
and with several spy stories worthy of the best LeCarre novel. But
also allies from the United States and Canada, England, Germany, the
Netherlands and other nations have spent countless weeks in Bodø
during large NATO exercises, and we would not be surprised to hear
that some of your passengers have actually been here before – in
uniform, in the service of their country.

When the USS Croatan unloaded a consignment of cocooned Lockheed F-104 Starfighters at Bodø harbour in 1963, it marked the start
of an active allied presence in the area. Only a few years earlier, the
U-2 spy plane piloted by Gary Powers of the CIA was shot down over
the Soviet Union, and international high tension culminated as the
Soviet Premier Krutschev threatened to destroy Bodø with nuclear
weapons. Maps found in the wreckage proved that the spy plane was
headed for a landing shrouded in secrecy – right here in Bodø. Now,
an original and intact U-2 can be seen at close hand here in Bodø.
