The Rector Writes
24:1
COME HOLY SPIRIT
Our national Church Leaders have again this year invited us to a special
period of prayer to take place between ASCENSION and PENTECOST.
‘THY KINGDOM COME’ is an invitation to prayer between 25th May and 4th
June. We show our faith and trust in God in prayer. It is in prayer that God
takes hold of our lives and works through us. Our prayer is particularly
effective when it is in the company of others. Prayer together can make a
lasting difference. We respond to God’s call and we find a deep unity of
purpose in prayer.
Churches Together in Sandwich are committed to this prayer and we are
distributing a special and simple Prayer Card in each of our congregations.
We will be part of ecumenical prayer around the world at this time. We
follow the example of the first disciples who, having come down from the
mount of the Ascension, waited in hope and prayer for the promised gift
of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
Please use the Prayer Card and pray the prayers which are also
reproduced here. Pray that friends, families and neighbours come to
know Jesus Christ.
THE ELECTION
The timing of the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ prayer initiative is determined
by the Church’s Calendar and the organisers could have had no way of
knowing that it would in fact be during a General Election campaign. As
this coincidence has happened we can grasp the opportunity to pray too
for our nation at this time and our decision making. In this context too we
pray ‘Thy Kingdom come’.
Working out how to use our vote is an obvious and urgent duty. Voting is
a privilege we shouldn’t ignore or take for granted, and yes, one that we
should not only think about, but also pray about. We should pray with a
real longing for the values of the Kingdom to be seen in our national life –
‘on earth as it is in heaven’.

The Rector Writes
24:1
Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of your people
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Almighty God, your ascended Son has sent us into the world
to preach the good news of your kingdom:
inspire us with your Spirit
and fill our hearts with the fire of your love,
that all who hear your Word
may be drawn to you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
Prayer for the General Election
Lord, you created us free to choose and made us accountable to you and to each other.
Give to those of us who have the right to elect representatives to serve
in our parliament and government an urgent sense of our responsibility,
a clear judgement, and a generous concern for the good of all,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

OUR MAYOR
Congratulations PAUL GRAEME on being elected Mayor of Sandwich for a fourth
year at the Annual Mayor Making Ceremony on 11th May.
We greatly appreciate all that Paul is and has already achieved as our Mayor,
together with Sue. We very much look forward to all that we will continue to
share together, and in this coming special year when Sandwich again holds the
Speakership of the Cinque Ports.
We are planning a great ‘Speaker’s Day’ for 2017, Saturday 7th October – a very
important date for the diary.

A CANTERBURY CROSS – IN MEMORY
At Easter in 2009 a new white Altar Frontal adorned the High Altar at St
Clement’s Church and was formally received and Dedicated on Easter Day in
memory of the late John Patterson.
For Easter this year a new motif of a Canterbury Cross has been added to the
Frontal in memory of PAT PATTERSON, John’s mother, who sadly died at the
end of January. Pat had donated the Frontal in John’s memory and now her
daughter Barbara Warren, who we thank very much, has given the new motif
which beautifully adorns the Frontal and is a special way in which to give thanks
for and remember Pat.
Both the Frontal and the new Cross have been made by Jayne Goss of Just
Jayne’s Sewing of Folkestone.

A GOOD READ
When people say ‘I don’t do God’ or ‘Religion is irrelevant
in our post-Christian age’ they often don’t know what it is
they don’t believe in. And it has to be said that many of us
who call ourselves Christian feel embarrassed about God
conversation lest people think we see ourselves as either
over pious or morally superior. That could be because we are
stuck with a less than plausible image of God in our minds.
This is a book which could give us confidence to new and
contemporary ways of thinking and talking about God. I
am so impressed by it that I am now reading it slowly for the
second time. It has given me new ways of perceiving God and
released me from the temptation to perceive God as some kind
of control freak. I must admit that the way we talk about God
in church sometimes conveys a powerful being at the top of a great hierarchy.
What Richard Rohr does is show us that God is constantly drawing us into the energy
of the Trinity which he calls the Divine Dance. In that way God helps us participate in
creation, in celebration and in pain which transforms the view we have of ourselves as
well as of God.
The book is refreshingly short on jargon but long on humour and, providing the reader
takes their time, it offers a reality of the living God which previously has been missed.
There is also a short but immensely useful appendix offering seven practices which can
help us into another dimension of our faith. Anyone who is serious about seeing their
faith mature will find deep help here.

THE SOUND OF CHURCH BELLS
There are many sounds that are uplifting. Of chirruping birds in the moments of sunrise
on a spring day, the baa-ing of lambs gambolling in the meadows, willow on leather
when Kent are batting at Canterbury’s St. Lawrence ground and on Sunday mornings
the sound of church bells that greet worshippers on their way to God’s House.
For too long the bells of St Clement’s have remained silent due to a combination of
unfortunate circumstances. Over a short period of time we lost the services of two
tower captains who moved away whilst further moves from Sandwich and ill health
reduced us to just two remaining members of the Band.
Much publicity about our plight and appeals for new recruits brought little
encouragement although two who expressed interest spent some Saturday mornings
at the Dover ringing school. Then a couple of the St Clement’s congregation who
had moved to the town expressed an interest. The Dover ringing school was unable
to take them and they were recommended to Sturry, whose Band included a number
of experienced instructors. And here begins a remarkable story that illustrates how
prayers are heard and answered.
The Sturry group, having completed a Saturday morning’s tuition at St Clement’s, were
walking along King Street when they met someone who had been one of their ringing
band some ten years previously. They persuaded the newly arrived Sandwich resident
to join in the following week’s practice, which she did, and despite not having rung
for ten years, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. She suggested to me that it might
attract some interest if I agreed to her publicising our needs on social media. I have
considerable reservations about this form of communication but agreed she should
give it a try. Within a matter of a few days there had been a remarkable twelve positive
responses. They were all invited to join us the following Saturday and with just one
exception, they all did!
It was a heart-lifting moment and although a small number have since decided it
isn’t for them, we now have a strong nucleus of ringers in training who have made
great strides since their initiation just fifteen weeks ago. To the two remaining from
the previous Band – Candy King and myself – can be added a further seven ringers
all of whom have progressed to the point where we are able to once again resume
Sunday ringing. Some weeks ago we set ourselves the target of Easter Day for the new
St Clement’s Band of Ringers to welcome the congregation and it was a great joy that
we were able to do so.
An immense amount of credit must go to those who took up the challenge for their
dedication and determination. But a very special “thank you” must go from everyone
who is an important part of our new team, and to the St Clement’s wider family, to
the quartet who have made this possible: Tony Goodman of Minster, who has been
responsible for the training, together with the Sturry Trio of Josephine, Tina and

ST CLEMENT’S CHURCHWATCH ANNUAL MEETING –
APRIL 2017
On 26th April the eighth Annual Churchwatch meeting was convened in The Atwood
room to preview the 23rd season of our undertaking each year to welcome visitors to
St Clement’s from 1st May to 30th September.
The well attended meeting was opened by The Rector who introduced the visiting
speaker, Mr James Ford RIBA, AABC, of Clague architects, Canterbury, who was to
describe “The Life and Work of a Church Architect”.
The Rector explained that Mr Ford is our new, recently appointed inspecting architect
and that all churches are required to appoint such a person to advise on and supervise
all work necessary for the maintenance and preservation of the church building. Every
five years the architect is required to thoroughly inspect the fabric of the church and
then submit a report to the Church Council detailing all repairs, renewals or building
work that are needed. The submission of this report is of course anticipated by Church
Council with some trepidation, but the regular annual maintenance advised by your
architect avoids nasty surprises at the end of the five year period. Interestingly, the
Rector pointed out that because of the Diocesan supervision of major work and
alteration to churches, normal local government planning consent is not required.
Mr Ford said he was the third generation of his family to become an architect, so it was in
a way an inherited chain of responsibility. He described an architect’s training as being a
seven year long series of alternating periods of studying theory and practical application.
The main battle in maintaining and preserving churches, particularly medieval gems
like St Clement’s, is against the elements. Erosion of the exterior stonework is an
observable problem, but it is the gradual, hidden ingress of moisture and damp into
the wood and stonework that over a long period can do substantial damage before
being detected. An inspecting architect has to be something of a diplomat. He must
be honest about the scale of work required but helpful in guiding his clients to find the
best and most economical solution.
Mr Ford explained that the role of church architects is not just about maintenance and
preservation of ancient buildings. Contrary to an opinion, probably widely held, church
buildings, their interior layout, their contents and furnishings have always been subject
to change and alteration to meet the needs and theology of each century. In the 16th
and 17th centuries particularly these changes were radical, conflicting and alarmingly
frequent. There are still major changes happening now to adapt church buildings to
the needs of the 21st century, Mr Ford referred to our own “South Aisle Facilities“ in
which we were sitting as a very good example of this. In many churches pews have
given way to chairs to give greater flexibility. This is all part of the current movement
to make churches more accessible and inclusive for the wider community and it is the
architect’s role to advise on, and design to achieve, a “balance of use with beauty”.
16
ST CLEMENT’S CHURCHWATCH ANNUAL MEETING –
APRIL 2017
The Rector warmly thanked Mr Ford for his talk and indicated that the planned changes
to the North Door of St Clements would be a very good example of creating more
access and inclusiveness along with also enhancing the building itself.
David Senior then opened up the meeting for any Churchwatch business. He announced
that three churchwatchers were retiring from the team, Jennifer Bradley, Gill Robertson
and Sue Tebbutt, the first two ladies having each been churchwatching for more than
twenty years. David thanked them for all their loyal support. Three new people have
joined, David and Jeanette Barber and John May.
The meeting concluded, as is the custom, with tea and cake provided by Angela Senior
and helpers.

SANDWICH INFANT SCHOOL
Although they are young, we teach the children at our school to have a pride in their
school and the town. We want them to contribute to the community. In the last couple
of months some of the children visited Age Concern and played games and talked to
the clients. The Year Two children are participating in the “Adopt a Station” scheme so
a small group can be seen caring for the flower beds each Monday morning. Finally
last month, on noticing that there was rubbish strewn all over the forecourt of the fire
station, we took the Year Two school councillors to pick up the mess. They were very
proud of their work and ensured that people’s first impression as they entered was that
of a tidy and cared for town.

AGE CONCERN SANDWICH
At Age Concern Sandwich we have a vision for Sandwich town
centre to become a dementia friendly place to visit. So people
with dementia, (and their accompanying friends and families)
are helped and supported when they visit. Ideally we would like staff in shops,
restaurants, cafes etc, to become Dementia Friends and become better informed
about the difficulties people living with dementia encounter when they go out. Also
to understand how to help and how to reduce any stress or anxiety people living with
dementia may be feeling.
Often if people don’t know how to respond in a situation they are likely to get it wrong,
so becoming a Dementia Friend will help people become better informed about
people living with dementia. We run regular Dementia Friend sessions at our centre,
we can also come out and visit an organisation, group, or business to do Dementia
Friends sessions on your premises if that is more convenient. Please contact Sally on
01304 614237 and select option 4 (Sunflower Centre) to find out more.
Alternatively if you have a little free time and would like to find out about volunteering
with us, please contact Gill Ball on 07735556811 or email [email protected]
We are looking for a volunteer to assist Sally with our Sandwich dementia friendly
project, volunteers to assist in our charity shop, with sorting, merchandising and serving
customers, volunteers to assist with art and craft, quizzes and activities, as well as
musicians to encourage additional music activities at the centre.

Class sizes of only 15?
That’s thinking
differently.
As Grammar Schools across East Kent are forced to increase class sizes at GCSE and A Level
up to 32 pupils per class, and at the same time cutting subject choices and extra-curricular
activities, Dover College is committed to small classes, investment in sport, music and
drama, and a full curriculum choice.
Isn’t it refreshing to think differently?
Think Dover College.
