Lesson 34: VCe Long U • Part 1
Introduce Long U
10–15 minutes
Point to the word flute as you read it. Explain that in words that have a pattern of vowel
(V), consonant (C), and final letter e (e), the first vowel often has the long sound.
Sound out the word with the child, as you run your finger under it. Have the child
repeat the sounds. Point to the words at the bottom of the page and explain that they all
have the VCe pattern. Ask the child to sound out each word with you as you run your
finger under each letter. Then have the child sound out each word on his/her own.
Write the words cut and cute on chart paper and place it on the table. Read both
words with the child and point out that the words differ by one letter. Point out that
adding the final letter e makes a VCe pattern, which changes the vowel sound. Ask
the child to read the word cards and sort them under the word cut or cute according
to their vowel sound.
5–8 minutes
Blend Words
Line up letter cards s, p, r, u, c, and e under the row of six boxes on the workmat.
Ask the child to move each letter into the box above it, starting on the left and saying
the sound of the letter. Ask the child what letter is needed at the end of the word, and
have him/her push up the letter e. Remind the child that the we do not hear the letter
e in this word. Ask the child to blend the sounds together to say the word.
Letter cards: r,
u, l, e, t, b, p
Repeat the process with the words rule, brute, tube, and pure. Give the child the letters needed to blend one word at a time, and help him/her pick which row of boxes
to use.
Game cards;
Game board;
Markers
Shuffle the game cards and place them face down in a stack. Have the child draw a
card and read the word. If the word is read correctly, the child can move along the
game board the number of spaces indicated on the card. Have the child place the
card at the bottom of the stack. It is now your turn to draw a card.

does, sing
Teach High-Frequency and Story Words
5–8 minutes
Hold up the word sing and read the word. Have the child repeat the letter names
and write the word in the air with his/her finger. Repeat with the word does. Lay
the two flash cards face up on the table. Without the child seeing, cover one of the
letters. Ask the child which letter is missing. Then reveal the letter and have the
child read and spell the word out loud.
Flash cards:
peppers, river
Read each review story word to the child while you hold up the card. Have the child
repeat each word several times while looking at the card.
Flash cards:
Complete set

combine all the cards and flash the cards several times for the child as he/she says

Cover the box in the word jukebox and have the child read the first part of the word.
Then uncover box and have the child read the whole word. Cover the -s in the
words prunes and tunes with your finger. Have the child sound out the root word
in each word, one at a time. Then uncover the -s and tell the child that the letter s

each letter.
Repeat with the review words in row 2, calling attention to the word with an -ed
