ILLUSTRATED METAPHOR ASSIGNMENT: THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION ARE/ARE LIKE…….
Using your notes and our discussion of the Articles of Confederation, create an illustrated simile or
metaphor to create a comparison of the document to something that will help explain the weaknesses
of the government in terms that a citizen of today can understand.
Use the model of the Schoolhouse Rock THREE RING CIRCUS as your model. It creates a simple, effective
visual and gives a brief explanation of the comparison.
Your metaphor must include the following:
1. State the metaphor.
2. Illustrate the metaphor. If stick people and line drawings are your thing, use them. If your
artistic talents take you beyond the basics, use them.
3. List at least three ways that Articles can be represented by your metaphor. You can complete
this step in a bullet list or you can label the illustration.
4. Your work must be completed on unlined copy paper. I prefer colorful, attractive work to bland
and boring work, so you have to use at least 3 colors in your illustration. Black ink, blue ink, and
pencil do not count as “3 colors.” 
Brainstorm with a partner to help you get started. Focus on how well-intentioned but inept this
government was. As difficult as it may be, you have to focus on failure/losing /overall lameness
for the planning of this assignment.
Use your remaining time in class today to plan and sketch your assignment. The completed
product is due no later than Friday, January 18 at 4:00.
