St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School A PRIMARY SCHOOL OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH OF AUSTRALIA OUTLOOK:22 27TH JULY 2012 Bev’s Banter Well, this is only the second week, but things are right back into routine, and it feels much further along in the term. It’s good to be busy! This week we welcome Nobuko Sakai and her two children Mizuki and Riko into our school for the next four weeks. They have travelled from Nagasaki to be part of our school community and we welcome them warmly. Mizuki is in Mrs O’Brien’s classroom, and Riko is in the Infants room. Nobuko is coming each day, and helping in the class. We hope to engage Nobuko in teaching us about her home and culture during her time here too. We are very blessed that she is helping with the extra curricula activities at lunchtime. We certainly hope they all enjoy their time here. Friday was a great day with the Jump Rope for Heart activities in the afternoon. The children were really engaged in all the activities and certainly enjoyed the fun of the afternoon. Thanks to Mrs O’Brien and Mr Hartwig for the great organisation on the day, but also in the weeks leading up to the jump off. Parents who attended also enjoyed the day, and we saw keen evidence from a few Mum’s of a misspent youth with their skipping abilities – they out did some of the kids!!! Check out the photos later in the newsletter. Our first round of Extra-Curricula activities at lunchtime started this week, and again they are proving very popular with the students. With seven different activities to choose from, there really is something for everyone. Our activities include: Cooking; Japanese; Knitting; Library; Music; Props Production and Scouting About. Thanks to our parents and grandparents who are helping out with these activities. The P and F are organising another working bee for the repainting of the front fence, the last one being called off due to inclement weather. The date planned is Friday 10th August starting at 10 am. 34 Lyne St (PO Box 73) HENTY NSW 2658 Ph:02 69293323 Fax:02 69293764 Email: [email protected] Web: www.stpaulshenty.nsw.edu.au Principal: Bev McFarland Dip T, B.Ed This is the day that students will be attending the Eisteddfod in Albury, and works well with the noisy works that will be undertaken. Helpers are asked to bring grinders, sanders and paintbrushes if they can. Remember – “Many hands make light work!” I’m sure Cameron would appreciate an indication if you are able to help on the day. This Sunday we are hosting the church service at St Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Culcairn. It is a parish service, and we are hoping to have many kids there. Thank you to those who have indicated they can assist with the service. Hope to see you all there. God Bless, Bev McFarland In the K-1 Classroom This has been a very exciting week, as we have welcomed Nobuko and Mizuki into the school from Japan, and Riko into our Kindergarten class. We hope to get a real taste of Japan while they are here, and already we are learning how to count to 10. Some of the children have picked it up remarkably quickly. Our sound of the week this week has been “b – as in Ben’s Big Boot” and our sound of the week table has been bursting with items that have been brought in! Our budgie has resided there for the week, and has been surrounded by balloons, bandaids, a banana, bears, bunnies, bubbles, balls, books, and much much more! Next week – “v, vampire vacuuming.” In Maths we have looked at teen numbers, and using ten as a base number to count on from for Kinder. In Year 1 we have continued to look at place value for numbers up to 100. We have found some great games and activities to consolidate this learning too. In Literacy we are looking at Narrative text types and have focused on sequencing events within the story. We did this with the classic – Little Red Riding Hood. Within this activity we are completing some very detailed drawings that will help us recall events, characters and emotions from the story. We are continuing to practise our two pieces for the Eisteddfod. There are only a couple of weeks to go, so please help, by reading through them with your child each night. We are really enjoying the poems we are doing this time! God Bless, Bev McFarland Year 2-3 Class Firstly, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our Japanese visitors Nobuko, Mizuki and Riko. It has been such a pleasure having Mizuki in our classroom and I hope that you all will enjoy your stay, build on your knowledge of Australia and the language, and make a lot of good memories. This week in class, we have continued to build on our understanding of whole number. We have paid particular attention to representing whole numbers using MAB blocks, numeral expanders and writing the number in words. As well as this, we explored flip, slide, turn and symmetry in 2D shapes. We continue to partake in fast maths activities and have extended this to include magic squares. Our literacy focus this term has changed, instead of one major novel, the class will be working in literacy groups each week. Every week there will be a book focus and activities planned for students to respond to the book. Last week we read, wrote, mimed, drew and painted the dreamtime story “Roughtail Lizard Dreaming”, this week we read, wrote, talked and laughed about “Mr McGee and the Biting Flea”. Next week we will revisit dreamtime stories and plan to write our own. Homework started this week. Just a reminder, weekly homework needs to be handed in on Friday and spelling homework is daily. We are practising our speech poems every day in the lead up to the Eisteddfod. Your child has a copy of both pieces in their reading folders. Please encourage them to practise this at home too. Thankyou!!! God Bless, Leticia O’Brien Mum’s outdoing the kids –and getting some great exercise. For more photos of JRFH and Lunch Activities –Get your newsletter by email! Year 4-5-6 Class Onwards and upwards and further on in! The 4/5/6 class have begun their spelling lists for term 3. This has been sent home in a new format and hopefully students are engaging with it as we have discussed in class. ie they need to do a little each night rather than knocking it off in one go. Students have been given a small text to read as part of their homework too. Either Esio Trot, The Emperors New Clothes or King Lear. Students need to read this and understand what they have read. This will be reinforced in class with a range of activities. It may help some students to tell the story in their own words. In HSIE students have been studying the ancient Olympics, discovering some weird and wonderful facts. Students are being drilled with ‘manners’ and being mindful of them. They are being reminded that their younger peers watch them all the time, “Always watching” (Ros – Monsters Inc) and imitate their behaviours. The class has been working on decimals in Maths. Students are being consistently challenged with their times tables and are showing progress. Can I ask that parents challenge their students with times table knowledge at any time, rewarding and encouraging them at every opportunity? Costing for excursion to Mogo is complete. The class will be attending Mogo Gold World on October 23rd – 26th 2012. An itinerary and requirements will be coming home closer to the excursion. The focus of this excursion will be Gold in the context of Bushrangers, Impact on Indigenous Australians and Life on the Goldfields. Invoices will be sent home in a few weeks. Yours in Christ Helmut Hartwig Our collection for Chapel this week was $23.30, bringing the total to $35.35. Pastor’s message “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3: 16 – 17) Scripture is God’s Word. We don’t need to look for God in bizarre faraway places. We don’t need to climb the mountains or cross the distant seas to find God. Where is God found? We know. In scripture. For Scripture is God’s very own words. The Bible itself tells us, “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16). While Paul, Luke, and Moses put the pen to the paper, it was God who delivered the message of Scripture. God inspired the prophets and apostles to write the very words he wanted. Scripture is God’s voice. Martin Luther once wrote, “Let the man who would hear God speak read Holy Scripture” (What Luther Says, p. 61). Are you looking for God? Do you wish to be close to him? Look in the Bible. You will always find him there. Scripture is where God reveals Christ to us. All of Scripture points to Jesus. The Old Testament promised that Jesus would come. The New Testament shows the promise fulfilled. The promise that God gives us in Scripture is the promise of forgiveness and eternal life, purchased by the blood of Christ. Scripture tells us step-by-step how Christ saved us. It tells us that Christ is God and that he became man. It tells us Christ lived a perfect life on our behalf. It tells us Christ gave his life as a payment for our sins. Jesus himself said, “These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39). Testimony is what is given in a trial. Scripture is God’s own testimony that, in the great trial known as judgment day, we will be declared “not guilty” because of Jesus. Scripture is how God saves us. God could “zap” faith into us if he wanted to do that. He could create faith while we are sleeping, eating, or playing a round of golf. But God has chosen to work through his Scripture. Through the gospel message, the Holy Spirit creates and strengthens saving faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible itself tells us, “By this gospel you are saved” (1 Corinthians 15:2). Scripture is where God speaks to us. It is where God tells us about our Saviour. It is the means by which God saves us. What do we need in order to have eternal life? Scripture alone. This is such a beautiful truth. A simple children’s song tells us, “Jesus loves me, this I know.” How do I know it? “For the Bible tells me so.” In his name, Pastor Adam Next week: Chapel is on Tuesday 31st July, and our Bible verse of the week will be Exodus 15:1-2: “I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.” And our bible story will be the crossing of the Red Sea from Exodus 14.
