Hyperthyroidism: Is your cat at risk?
Hyperthyroidism is a condition
that affects many older cats.
Common symptoms include
weight loss with a hearty
appetite, unusual vocalizations,
increased drinking and urination,
and/or an unkempt appearance.
Diagnosing hyperthyroidism is
easily done with a blood test here
at A Cat’s View. If your kitty is
showing signs or is over the age
of 10 years old we recommend
testing be done.
Correcting the overactive thyroid
will help your kitty’s heart, blood
pressure, eye health, and overall
condition. Your kitty may also
feel less anxious and agitated and
should begin to put on healthy
weight.
High blood pressure often
accompanies hyperthyroidism and
a tiny tablet may also be
prescribed to reduce high blood
pressure, especially early in the
course of therapy. The blood

Since hyperthyroidism tends to occur in the
older patient, we will want to be sure to address
any infections or other problems your kitty may
have to bring him/her to peak health.
Hyperthyroidism is
common in older kitties and
very easily diagnosed as
well as treated. If you have
any concerns about your
kitty we can help.
Treatments options include:





A very strict prescription diet
Radioactively inactivating the thyroid
Surgically removing the thyroid
Daily medicine crushed in the food or
placed directly into the mouth
Transdermal ear cream that puts the
medicine directly through the ear skin
( especially if it is difficult to give kitty
oral medicine and preferably after the
condition has been swiftly brought under
control with oral medication)
After your kitty has been on the thyroid
regulating medicine (methimazole or
felimazole) for a couple weeks, we will need
to retest the blood to make sure your kitty is on
the correct dose. Once things are running
smoothly, we will only need to check your
kitty’s thyroid blood level every 6 months.
