Visa Information and Resources
Some DePaul study abroad programs require students to obtain student visas. On this page, you will find links to
where you can find relevant information about visas organized by country. The best source of information for
entry and visa requirements is at the local consulate or embassy of your host country. Local consulates and
embassies provide the most up-to-date visa requirements for students who are planning to study abroad. If your
program requires you to obtain a visa, it is your responsibility to contact the host country’s local consulate or
embassy for up-to-date instructions on how to obtain a visa.
Please be aware if you plan on traveling before or after your program dates, you may be restricted by entry
and/or exit requirements of the country. Please contact your Study Abroad Advisor before you book your flights
in order to discuss pre- or post-program travel plans.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The information below is a summary of the requirements for various countries. Visa
requirements can be quite detailed and governments can change visa rules, costs and regulations very quickly. It
is the student’s responsibility to verify the most accurate and up-to-date visa information of the host country.
The Study Abroad Program will update this website periodically to reflect changes and updates.
This webpage was last updated on: 02/14/2017
Special Note for non-U.S. Citizens:
If you are an international student/non-U.S. citizen, please also contact International Student and Scholar
Services at [email protected] in order to ensure that you understand any requirements. We encourage you to
work closely with your ISSS and Study Abroad Advisors, as well as the Embassies or Consulates, to ensure that
you have the proper documentation to allow you to exit and re-enter the United States for your academic
program. Green Card Holders / Permanent Residents should contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services office in the Department of Homeland Security in order to determine the best course of action in
preparing for a study abroad program.
Please note that visa information is most applicable to term-long study abroad programs. For short-term study
abroad programs, please contact the Program Manager listed on specific program web pages for more
information.

Vienna University of Economics and Business strongly encourages students staying in Austria
from 91-180 days to apply for a D-Type visa at the Austrian Consulate in their jurisdiction prior
to leaving for Austria to avoid complications upon arrival. Find your consulate here:
http://www.austria.org/jurisdiction.
If students are unable to apply at the consulate prior to leaving, they can apply for their visa at
the Austrian consulate in Bratislava, Slovakia when they arrive if they are US or Canadian
citizens or citizens of a visa-exempt country. If students decide to apply for their visa in
Bratislava, they should contact their airline before buying a ticket to ensure they can check-in

Proof that you have sufficient financial income or support for the duration of your stay.
This must cover your healthcare, living, study and accommodation costs as well as the
cost of your return ticket. This can be in the form of a certificate stating you have

Belgium is studying)

For a Schengen Long Stay Type D Visa, the Application fee is approximately $216 (must be
paid in Euros);
No visa required for a stay less than 90 days, internship or not. If students plan to travel before
or after the program and their stay exceeds 90 days in total, they will need to obtain a visa for
Schengen long term stay BEFORE arrival. Students are to apply for the visa on their own but
will need the acceptance letter from the Leuven Institute. Note: Because Leuven Institute is not
a recognized institution in Belgium (it is an Irish Institution); students will need to submit the
police record during the visa application. Obtaining the police records can take months.
Students in the past have used an organization called Accurate Biometrics to obtain their police
records and FBI Background checks more quickly (approximately within 72 hours).

A vital part of your student visa application is the official criminal history report. The process
for obtaining this report is lengthy and therefore requesting this information demands your
immediate attention.
Students holding U.S. passports must request their official criminal history report through the
FBI and the document is officially referred to as an FBI Identification Record.
Please follow the instructions below or your request may take up to six weeks to process.
Although the FBI does not admit to expediting record requests, the instructions below can help
to ensure a timely response.
1. Visit http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/fprequest.htm and follow the instructions for obtaining an
FBI Identification Record.
2. Have yourself fingerprinted. Contact your local police department for information. Download
and print a fingerprint form from the FBI website listed above.
3. Complete the online FBI cover letter found on the FBI website listed above. Please instruct
the FBI to send the report to you (take into consideration whether you want it sent to your
home address or your school address).
For the date needed, you are advised to use 6 weeks from the date you submit the request.
4. Print and Sign the request.
5. Prepare your packet containing:
a. FBI cover letter
b. Fingerprints
c. Fee: Money Order or Credit Card form (NO Checks or Cash will be accepted)
Optional (but highly recommended): In order to expedite the process, enclose a prepaid,
preaddressed, overnight (courier) envelope addressed to yourself.
6. Put the above items in an envelope and mark the envelope “URGENT – FBI Identification
Record must be received by ________(date)” (use the same date you used when completing
the FBI cover letter – 6 weeks from the date you submit the request).
7. Send your request to the FBI (if you use UPS, FedEx, or DHL with a tracking number it’ll be
easier to trace if need be).
8. Follow-up with the FBI by telephone, (304)625-5590, within a few weeks to confirm that
your request was received. If you do not receive your report by the date requested, contact the
FBI to ensure that there is not a problem with your request (often payment is not included).
In the past, some DePaul students have worked with a company called Accurate Biometrics,
to have their fingerprints and FBI Background Check done within a 72-hour period. You may
decide to go that route, but be aware that it may cost more money to go through this process.
