Get on I‐40 W and follow the signs to Chapel Hill. Take Exit 270 at Hwy 15‐501 and turn left at the light. You will be on Hwy 15‐501 South, one of the main roads in Chapel Hill. Follow 15‐501 South for approximately one mile, until the road splits. Follow the road to the right, and you will be on Franklin Street. Franklin Street will continue through downtown Chapel Hill and eventually it will lead you to the town of Carrboro. 2 Geographic Information: So where exactly is Chapel Hill, North Carolina? The Town of Chapel Hill is located principally in Orange County and slightly in Durham County in the north central portion of North Carolina on the Piedmont Plateau, approximately equidistant between Washington, DC, and Atlanta, Georgia. The area’s topography is characterized by rolling hills. The Town, which was incorporated in 1819, presently covers an area of 19.86 square miles and has a population of 44,015. The Town is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation's oldest public university, established in 1789. These buses are remarkably efficient and clean, but the routes are often lengthy and time consuming. Regular hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays (night service is available but less frequent) and between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturdays. On weekends and during summer sessions, buses run on a much reduced schedule. The UNC OneCard office is located to the right of the Student Stores Building (Plan to walk or ride the RU/U‐bus to the Student Stores Building; parking is limited.) Be sure to have your passport with you when you apply. You will need to have your picture taken and your application processed, and this should take about 30 minutes.
