Peter’s instructions to Christians who were in the
fiery trial brought by the evil Roman Emperor,
Nero, starting in 64 A. D., I Peter 2:13-3:7 (the
subject of submission).
Submission to government, all men, the
brotherhood, and God-2:13-17
Submission of slaves to masters-2:18-20
Submission of Christ to suffering-2:21-25
Submission of wives to husbands-3:1-6
Submission of husbands to wives by honoring
them as the weaker vessel-3:7
◦ A. The powers that be are ordained of
God-Romans 13:1.
◦ “Let every soul be subject to the higher
powers. For there is no power but of God:
the powers that be are ordained of God.”
◦ B. Governments exist for the praise of
those who do well, and for the
punishment of evildoers-2:14.
C. This even includes death (capital
punishment)-Romans 13:4.
“But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid;
for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the
minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath
upon him that doeth evil.”
“And that prophet, or that dreamer of
dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath
spoken to turn you away from the Lord your
God”-Deuteronomy 13:5.
FALSE DOCTRINE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE
WITH GOD!
D. “For the Lord’s sake”-2:13.
Question: Can anyone ever doubt that the
submission of Shadrach, Meshack,
Abednego, and Daniel contributed greatly
to the conversion of Nebuchadnezzar?
“Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol
and honor the King of heaven, all whose
works are truth, and his ways judgment:
and those that walk in pride he is able to
abase”-Daniel 4:37.
Note: Praise, extol, and honor are all
present tense!
E. When governing authorities give laws
contrary to God’s law; God must be obeyed
rather than man-see Acts 4:29; Daniel 3:17&18.
F. “Honor all men”-2:17.
This past Monday was a National Holiday to
honor Dr. Martin Luther King.
His famous statement, “I have a dream” was what
I call, “his punchline!”
In my opinion, the weightiest statement in that
lesson was when he said, “We must learn to live
together as brothers, or perish together as
fools!”
If all men would “honor all men,” there
would be no racial issues in the world!!
“Therewith bless we God, even the Father;
and therewith curse we men, which are made
after the similitude of God”-James 2:9. See also
Genesis 9:6.
“Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man
shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God
made he man.”
When men honor their fellow man, they will
neither speak evil words against them, nor take
their life!!
THAT SLAVERY IS WRONG IS SEEN BY THE
PREVIOUS VERSE! MEN WHO HONOR OTHER
MEN DO NOT MAKE SLAVES OF THEM!
In my opinion, the second greatest “national
sin” ever committed by America is slavery!
I think the first is abortion!
In their early history, the Israelites were
slaves to the Egyptians!
I have no doubt in my mind that slavery was
ended in America because of the influence
of the bible!
A. I’ve said throughout my preaching career that
the commands in the NT for slaves to be in submission
to their masters had to be difficult in application!
B. Apparently, God knew that slaves viewed as
“good” by their masters would be treated better by their
masters!
C. Peter says twice if the Christian slaves suffered
wrongfully because of conscience towards God, their
conduct was viewed as “thankworthy,” or, “acceptable”
before God-see verses 19&20.
D. Question: What was the outcome of the
meeting that occurred between Philemon and
Onesimus?
Read the book of Philemon!
I Think they hugged one another and shed many tears,
and embraced one another as brothers in Christ! And, I
can’t see it any other way than Philemon setting
Onesimus free!
A. See the connection between v. 21,
and the instructions to slaves. Peter is saying to
the slaves: “You were called to suffer because
Christ was called to suffer, and as you suffer
wrongfully, you are following in the footsteps of
Christ!”
B. Christ is an example of suffering
without retaliation!!
C. Christians are to follow in his steps!
D. Please note the depth of
Christ’s sufferings without retaliation on
His part!
He died for us-see verses 24&25.
E. Contrast that with the
tendency of men to get “ticked off” at the
slightest thing to the point of hurling filthy
insults and using extremely vulgar “handsigns” towards those who have offended
them!!
F. Brethren, shame on us if we do
such things!!
G. Christ is the “example”
(hupo/grammon).
The word literally means “under-writing.” It
comes from the learning method for writing
of having the model at the top, and
underneath, the student copies the model
over and over until it becomes “second
nature.”
Christ is the “copy-head” for the Christian
to duplicate in his own life!
Question: Are we at the point where we can
say what Paul did?
“Be ye followers (ASV, imitators) of me, even
as I also am of Christ”-I Corinthians 11:1.
A. Peter is dealing with
Christian wives whose husbands have
heard the word of God, but have not yet
been persuaded.
B. Peter is telling such wives that
they have the potential of “winning” their
husbands without saying “a word” to
them!
C. This can be done by the wives
showing their husbands the beauty of
their submissive spirit.
◦ D. The emphasis for the
Christian wife is not upon the
outward adornment, but
upon the inward attitude of a
meek and quiet spirit!
◦ E. Wives, remember, Peter
says the husband can be won
without “a word!” Believe it,
and don’t pester your
husbands!

“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them
according to knowledge, giving honour
unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel,
and as heirs together of the grace of life:
that your prayers be not hindered.”
