As we come to the end Welcome from the
of another year, we rePublisher
flect on the joys and
hardships of the past
and renew our hopes
and aspirations for the new year to come. It has not been
an easy year for many of us, but we can be thankful for the
strong sense of community found in Penngrove, and the
kindness of neighbors to help see each other through.

In this issue we mark the Christmas season with
a round-up of the remarkable number of tree
farms in the neighborhood, plus a short history of Christmas traditions and the role of the
tree in them. We also look at another venerable
tradition, Penngrove’s own village blacksmith,
and take our usual look at changes around town
in our Inside Penngrove column.

And a shout out for the exceptional colors and deep autumnal hues in the local trees and vineyards this year. The
vibrancy of fall only enhances the burnished beauty of
Sonoma County hillsides and reminds us once again how
blessed we are to live here.

Christmas time has also traditionally been the season of giving. Even in hard times, perhaps especially in hard times, it is
important to support fund-raising activities in the community. Kudos to the Rancho Adobe Fire District for their annual
toy drive, and to Penngrove school students for participating
in the canned food drive. The Penngrove Social Firemen are
holding a New Year’s Eve dance which will help them raise
money to continue helping us as a community. They have just
made a substantial donation to Penngrove School and did the
same last year, thanks from our children. If you’re staying in
town on New Year’s Eve, maybe stop in at the dance and show
your support. Getting involved in local charitable organizations is not that difficult. Find one that makes sense to you,
and give them a call. They’ll be glad to hear from you, and
you’ll be glad you did.

Trees Live oN
There is no more iconic image of Christmas than the
family gathered in the living room around a tree adorned
with ornaments collected through the years. The annual
Christmas tree is very much the symbol of many holiday
festivities, and millions of them are cut down each year
for a few weeks of exhibition and decoration. These days
in a time of heightened environmental consciousness and
arboreal sensitivity, it has become important to remember
that, metaphorically speaking, trees don’t grow on trees.
Thus it is a welcome trend that sees a rise in the purchase
and care of living Christmas trees.

Penngrove Elementary
School News
,
As a life long resident of Sonoma County and
thirteen year resident of Penngrove, I want
to thank you for the informative Penngrove
magazine you are producing. We support all
the shops here and we’re very proud of the
events in our little town. I wanted to make
you were aware of another possible tool/vehicle for our community to use. I’m not sure
if you have heard of viral calendars. This is
the link to Penngrove’s: http://www.neighborhoodnow.com/showcalendar.aspcityid=1
4295&caid=152547&affid=101. It is a community based calendar that is free for anyone to use and post their events to, with free
business listings and free articles from local
businesses. There is a separate section for
schools and organizations to have their own
calendars too.
Penngrove students are learning the gift of giving this holiday season with
a series of fund-raisers, food and toy drives and other community events.
For the past few weeks, the children have been collecting canned food to
be donated to the Petaluma Kitchen Canned Food Drive, with each class in
competition to see which one collects the most cans. Students are also participating in collecting toys for the Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District’s
annual Toy Drive. And another successful fund-raiser wrapped up with the
Innsbrook gift paper sale, with 50% of the proceeds going back to the school.
The 4th Grade classes took their annual overnight trip to Fort Ross in
November, where they learned how the Russian American Co. lived and
worked from 1812-1841. All of the students, teachers and chaperones
were given characters to play and dressed their parts. It was a great way to
be immersed in some of California’s history.
Kim Murphey - Penngrove
Hello - The Local History Room at the
Petaluma Library would like to acquire a set
of all previous issues, and be added to your
mailing list. A copy of Vol 3 Issue 1, the “Second Anniversary/Fall 2009 Edition” turned up
here, and no one seems to know where it
came from. Nor have any of us ever seen
a previous issue, but we all agree that it is
something that belongs in our history room,
since we cover Penngrove history as well as
the rest of the south county and beyond.
We also would like to invite you to come
see what we have here: Our collection was
begun by two Petaluma historians, Ed Mannion and Ed Fratini. It continues to grow of
course, and we are an excellent resource for
the entire community. Our collection comprises a great many photographs and clippings as well as books, directories, reports,
ledgers, and a host of other material. Regular hours for the history room are Tuesdays
1-4pm (Docent Lucy Kortum), Wednesdays
6-8:30pm (Docent Nancy Wilson) and Thursdays 1-4pm (Docent Walter Roeder).

The Halloween Carnival seems to
get better every year and this year
was no exception. With over a dozen
game booths, a hay pyramid, haunted house, cakewalk and delicious
BBQ, you couldn’t go wrong. Children swarmed around in amazing
costumes, winning prizes at every
booth. A parade of all the costumes
ended the day as trophies were given
out. The top prize went to King Tut!
The annual winter book sale was
held in November with students
buying plenty of
books to keep
them occupied
over the winter.
For your local Halloween Carnival booths
entertainment, there are a number of holiday plays, concerts and even
a gift sale coming up in the next couple of months. Check out the website at www.penngroveelementary.org for details. Come on by and support
your local school.
Thank you, Nancy Wilson - Petaluma

Inside Penngrove
With the holiday season here, you don’t
have to go far to find your festive accessories. Local Penngrove stores have all
you need. Passanisi’s have a wonderful
array of homegrown Poinsettias; Bud’s
have the best selection of holiday meats;
and all your Christmas and party outfit
requirements can be met at Custom Costumes. Agreements with property owners
have been hashed out at last, allowing the
Main Street sidewalk project to finally get
under way. Bids were opened in September with North Bay Construction winning out. Work should hopefully be underway soon and is expected to take three
months once they get going, so expect an
early Spring completion. A few conscientious town folks got together to help clean
up Penngrove Park (middle photo) one early November weekend on Park Clean Up

the steel locomotives were hauling the harvested cobblestones from Penngrove’s fields to San Francisco for its fabled
streets. The dark wooden interior walls have taken on a bluish-gray metallic hue from years of smiting red-hot glowing
iron. Like the god, Vulcan, in Greek and Roman mythology
Reis beats, pounds, pulls and punches raw black iron, not
into weapons for the gods, but into delicate works of ornamental iron for customers throughout the country.

The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands;
And the muscles of his brawny arms

beads of sweat on their brows. The blacksmith is an iconic
figure in American folklore and Dave would find himself at
home in America in the middle of the 1800’s.

Dave proudly served on the submarine USS Segundo SS398 in Viet Nam starting in 1969. The Viet Nam war is
usually thought of as the “helicopter war” but Dave and
his crew mates’ mission was to patrol the coastal waters of
the South China Sea seeking to intercept radio transmissions and conduct rescue operations. When the Segundo
was decommissioned and sunk off the coast of San Diego
in 1970 Dave was the last engineman off the boat before it
went down to its final resting place in the deep, dark blue
Pacific Ocean.

Penngrove is inextricably woven into
the fabric of Dave’s life. He met his
wife, Marie, at the Twin Oaks in 1987
shortly after he moved his shop into
its current location. They have two
sons - Jay, who is in the wine industry
and Brent, who oversees the seafood
at Oliver’s Market in Cotati.
To further his credentials as a 19th

man Dave is, and
has been, a working

in round ups on the
Ordway cattle ranch
near Brentwood and
he currently tends a

Why We Have
Christmas
Trees And
Other
Christmas
Traditions
day in the military custom of officer’s serving Christmas dinner
to their men. Mistletoe has an ancient connection with fertility rites, dimly reflected today in the waning custom of kissing
under the mistletoe. This is a real triumph for tradition because
this parasitic growth with its white berries is more loaded with
paganism and superstition than any other Christian emblem.
Many clergy exclude it from the church to this day.
Christmas will be here soon
with all its associated beliefs
and traditions. Fresh cut trees
appear waiting to be decorated,
wrappings cover mysterious
packages. However, ancient
superstition jostles with religious devotion and rank commercialism. On the one hand
Christmas reflects the ultimate
Christian doctrine and on the
other the midwinter festival
By Virginia Drury
which is far older. It’s surprising
how many of the old customs that were part of the midwinter,
or Solstice, festival are still in use in today’s Christmas traditions, like holly and ivy, mistletoe and evergreens. In ancient
times, the midwinter ceremonial ritual fell on Winter Solstice,
December 21st, the shortest day, because it was thought to be
necessary to prevent the sun from getting any weaker. People
believed these ceremonial rites worked because after the shortest day the days became longer and so came the great midwinter festival to give thanks.
As in so many early religions, particular trees in the great forests of Prussia and Central Europe were considered sacred and
could be approached only by priests. However, it was special
to go into the forest to
cut down a tree for the
‘yule’ log. The word
‘yule’ is of Norse origin;
the burning of the yule
log, another dying custom, but still known to
this day as a ceremonial
way of producing midwinter heat and light.
With great revelry, it
was dragged into the house and set to burn throughout the feast.
The evergreen tree became part of the Christmas celebration
early in the 16th century. Martin Luther, according to legend,
was so impressed with the beauty of the stars shining through the
snow laden boughs, that he cut a small fir and took it home. He
set up the tree in his house and decorated it with candles to symbolize for his children the star-filled sky over Bethlehem. Queen
Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, brought the custom to Britain
and ultimately it spread to Canada and America.
Today’s Christmas festivities reflect a complex pattern of these
past pagan customs, many in distorted or different forms. Bringing evergreens into the home for decoration such as holly and
ivy is exactly what the Roman’s did several thousand years ago
to celebrate Saturnalia, worship of the God Saturn. They even
decorated the evergreens with gifts and ornaments - just like we
do our Christmas tree. It was days of public revelry which often
saw masters waiting on their slaves - a custom reflected to this

With the holidays on the horizon, I have chosen a couple of recipes
which are delicious at a party, or boxed and given as a gift.
PARENTS
Parents
are those wonderful people
who want our lives to be
happy and complete.
CHEESE CRISPS
4oz butter softened
8oz. soft cheese of choice
(grated)
They laugh at our laughter,
cry at our tears
and dream our dreams.
Dash cayenne or tabasco
(optional)
And they are always ready
to give us their encouragement
and support.
No matter how grown up
we may become,
no matter where we go in life
or what we do,
we never outgrow
our parents love.

Christmas customs are ever evolving. Santa Claus evolved
from St. Nicholas, who, as an old man, was Bishop of Myra in
Asia Minor in the fourth century. Legend says he had a tendency to lose his temper but was kind-hearted and became
the patron saint of children. Up to the nineteenth century he
has been portrayed as distributing gifts to good children on his
feast day December 6th, dressed in his bishop vestments. The
present red-robed figure, a jolly gentleman with flowing white
beard, and sled with reindeer was born from the imagination of
Thomas Nast, a commercial artist, and this new Santa Claus
was transferred to Christmas Eve.
Traditions ancient and modern have combined to shape so
many of our present day Christmas festivities and symbols.
There gathered a sub-Christian theology around Thomas
Nast’s Santa Claus that the jolly old soul represented a universal spirit of love and goodwill, thereby spreading the real meaning of Christmas, and providing an appropriate conclusion.
To all a Happy and Safe Christmas!
