Standard 5.1 Energy Transfer and Transformations

Programs Correlating to the Connecticut Science Standards for Grade 5
Standard 5.1 Energy Transfer and Transformations
Lights, Color, Action-This class sheds light on the properties of rainbow colors.
Children observe demonstrations that blend colors to produce white light, and
others that separate white light into colors. Experiments with prisms and
diffraction lenses give children the opportunity to explore the color spectrum of
various light sources. A chromatography activity provides an interesting
demonstration of separating printed colors on a filter. Children look at the world
through tinted lenses to experience color-blindness and see through the eyes of
animals. A light-induced, optical effects demonstration device to take home
completes this illuminating adventure!
Planets and Moons- Students set off on a voyage to discover the Solar System. Students
impersonate the planets to compare their sizes and distances from the Sun, recreate a solar
and lunar eclipse, and become particles on a voyage into a planet's core. Students get a gravity
assisted launcher to continue their exploration at home.
Space Technology -Space Technology starts with an exploration of space-related technologies
used on Earth. Students will help laser light through a maze, use principles of radar technology
to find hidden mountains, and discover the importance of points of reference to depth
perception. From there, it's out into space with the launch of a satellite into orbit (at the edge of
their desks) and examine potential threats to spacecraft. Children will leave revved up by an
investigation of shuttle fuel!
The Glow Show- This class concentrates on how we perceive light and its effect on objects.
The concept of how colors are perceived in white light is presented using a hands-on, tricolor
experiment. Next, the nature of fluorescence and phosphorescence are unveiled in a black light
demonstration. A discussion on the commercial applications of glow-in-the-dark products is
followed by a challenge to find fluorescing materials among common objects.
Chemiluminescence is demystified using a flashlight analogy. The students take part in a roleplaying game that provides them with an understanding of the security features used in making
real money.
Optical Illusions- Children will work against their eyes! Optical illusions will trick their brain with
lines and coils. Children will discover how mirrors and their reflections can play tricks on what
their see. They will attempt to touch a mirage. Students will make periscopes to see above and
beyond!

Optical Illusions- see above
Tantalizing Taste- Students will exercise their sense of taste! They will magnify their taste buds
and unplug their noses. Students will compare flavors with one another and try a nose-blind
tasting challenge.
Standard 5.3 Earth in the Solar System
Planets and Moons- see above
Space Phenomena- Students will explore the phenomenal events that take place in the night
sky. Children will create their own impact craters, and observe model meteors falling through a
model atmosphere. After a friendly game of satellite tag designed to teach students about
reflected light, students watch a model comet form right before their eyes. After exploring the
composition of real comets, students will make comet balls to take home with them!
Sun and Stars- Students will investigate the Sun and distant stars, and the galaxies they form.
Children will explore stellar life cycles, create new solar systems, and make their own
constellations. Students will take home their very own cosmic disk to locate stars in the night
sky.
