Commercial forestry as we now know it, began in
the 1880’s with the initial planting of the King’s
Forest at Greeba, Archallagan and South Barrule.
Through a policy of afforestation in the 1980’s,
there was a significant expansion and many areas
planted at that time are now coming on-stream in
terms of timber production. Current management
policy ensures that plantations are managed
sustainably.
Dependent on location and productivity, felled areas
within our plantations may be re-stocked with
conifers or re-planted with a mixture of broadleaves
to enhance biodiversity and visual amenity. Where
upland areas were planted, and where appropriate,
land may be reverted to upland heath and blanket
bog, these being rare and internationally important
habitats.
Our timber comes from our 50 forests spread across
the Island. These forests are managed in a manner
that allows the production of a timber crop, as well
as offering a public amenity with the associated
health benefits, carbon sequestration and visual
amenity
St. John’s Sawmill, is located on the Foxdale Road between Tynwald Hill and The Hope, it is operated by
the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. The Sawmill was first opened in 1982 prior to
which, the old Forestry Board’s sawmilling operations were based at Laurel Bank on the T.T. course, North
of Ballacraine.
A good deal of local demand for agricultural fencing is supplied by our mill along with a range of garden
fencing. Our joinery department manufactures high quality garden furniture, gates and sheds which can
be, if required, constructed to customer requirements.
All our products are manufactured from Manx timber harvested from a sustainable supply from within our
own plantations. To ensure the longevity of our products, they are all pressure-treated with water-based
preservative.
The Sawmill also produces a range of fuel wood, from large log-lengths of timber, through various sizes of
firewood bags. The Sawmill is keenly involved in the Government’s initiatives to encourage use of
renewable fuel. The Sawmill itself, and the nearby DEFA Headquarters are both heated using woodchip
fuel and this resource is being increasingly utilised as more Government developments, including new
schools and sheltered housing complexes, become equipped to use this renewable locally-sourced fuel
resource.

Manx Larch Lap & Trellis Panels
Our fence panels are ideal for adding extra privacy

Sheds
Our high quality bespoke sheds are fully pressure-treated with preservative and are made to order. They
are available in a range of sizes with one window and a choice of either a pent (single sloping) roof or an
apex (double sloping) roof.
We will provide a free, no obligation quote for the exact shed, summer house or potting shed to suit your
needs, including stable doors, double doors, extra windows etc. Our sheds are delivered free of charge in
flat pack form.

Tips & Butts (when available)
Available in Spruce and Pine depending upon stock
levels. Tips and butts are the tops and tails of the
timber that comes into the yard. This firewood can
be up to 12 inches in diameter and 4ft in length,
hence a chainsaw maybe required to reduce them
to suitable sizes for domestic use. Each load
measures approximately 3 cubic metres.
