Dear Future AP Chemistry Student, This fall you will begin work in a challenging and rewarding AP Chemistry class which is modeled upon a comparable collegelevel general chemistry course. The AP exam in May is designed to allow you to demonstrate mastery of collegelevel coursework. Most colleges and universities in the United States recognize AP exams in the admission process and will grant college credit for a successful score. There is a wide variety of higher level chemistry content that will need to be covered before May 2017 to properly prepare you for the AP Chemistry exam. To make sure there is enough class and lab time to cover these topics we will not be spending much class time reviewing concepts that you covered in first year chemistry. I require that incoming AP students complete at least 10 hours of summer review on foundational level chemistry topics. This will ensure that you come to your first day of AP Chemistry ready to start covering the AP curriculum. This summer each student will review by completing the FlinnPREP™ AP Chemistry Online Prep Course. The access fee has already been paid for you. To begin working on this program go to www.flinnprep.com . There is a place in the middle of this website to enter the “student linking code” listed below and to activate your own personal account. Student Linking Code = x0g5q (the second character is a zero) Assigned units of the course must be completed and the unit test passed (80%) by the first day of school in September. You are given unlimited attempts to pass the tests (but the questions do change). I will be able to view your progress online throughout the summer. Below are the assigned units that must be completed: Unit 1: Nomenclature, Unit 2: Atomic Structure and Periodic Trends, Unit 3: Chemical Reactions, Unit 4: Bonding Basics, Unit 5: Structure and Properties, Unit 6: Stoichiometry, Unit 7: Gases, Unit 8: Solutions, Unit 9: Acids and Bases, and Unit 10: Critical Thinking in AP Chemistry. Research has shown that students who complete review and preparation work prior to starting an AP level course have a higher success rate on the AP exam. These students are also less likely to fall behind at the start. If you have any questions over the summer, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] . I look forward to helping you explore deeper into the world of chemistry next year! Mr. Hasty
