Prof. Hem Chandra Gupta
Born on 18th February, 1952 Professor H. C. Gupta appointed as Member, Union Public Service
Commission on 15-05-2014. Prior to his present appointment, he had served as Professor of
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. He had received his Ph.D for the studies in “Lattice
Dynamics of Metals: A Pseudopotential Approach” in 1972 from Indian Institute of Technology,
Delhi. He was the recipient of Fulbright Fellowship (USEFI) and South-South Fellowship
(TWAS) Trieste, Italy. He has authored more than 219 national and international research
papers. He has written one book and one review article, edited one book in Hindi and supervised
more than Twenty four students for their Ph. D Degree. He was also Co-investigator in-charge of
eleven research projects. His research interests were thermal and Electrical Properties of Solids
and Liquids, Molecular Dynamics of Low Dimensional Solids, Microwave integrated Circuits.
Professor Gupta has been an eminent teacher and educational administrator. He began his career
as a Lecturer in the K.M College, Delhi University in 1971. From 1981 to 2014 at Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi he had wide range of administrative experience. During
his long tenure spanning 33 years, Professor Gupta held various key positions at Indian Institute
of Technology (IIT), Delhi. He was the organizing Chairman, JEE (Advanced), 2013 of IIT,
Delhi. Under his guidance for the first time, a new examination pattern was envisaged for
entrance to the undergraduate programmes of all the IITs and the entire organizing was done
very successfully. Apart from that he had contribution in the policy making for the overall
development of IIT, Delhi. He had 14 year long experience in Management of Students’ affairs
beginning as a warden and culminating as Dean of Students. He also served as Vice Chancellor
of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut between July, 2011 to September, 2011. He was
also involved in handling of confidential work in connection with GATE entrance as well as
various State Entrance Examinations.
