46. During the last week, you wrote checks for $45.10, $32, $450, and $92.16. What is the total amount of checks
written during the week?
$45.10 + $32 + $450 + 92.16 = $619.26
47. You have $745.26 in your checking account before writing a check for $110.78. What is your new balance?
$745.26 - $110.78 = $634.48
48. You own three adjoining parcels of land containing 22 acres, 105.643 acres, and .92 acres. What is the total acreage?
22 acres + 105.643 acres + .92 acres = 128.563 acres
49. You go into an office supply store with a $50 bill. You buy some office supplies and come out of the store with
$8.52 in change. How much did you spend?
$50 - $8.52 = $41.48
50. Luciano Montoya owns a tile business. Luciano charges $9.50 a square foot (sq ft) for a certain tile. How much
should Luciano charge a customer for 322 square feet of tile?
322 sq ft $9.50 per sq ft = $3,059
51. You are thinking about buying a watermelon. If the melon weighs 18.5 pounds (lb) and sells for 39 cents a pound,
how much will the melon cost (rounded to the nearest penny)?
18.5 lb $0.39 per lb = $7.215 = $7.22 (rounded)
52. Howard Sadler is a traveling salesman. His employer reimburses employees for car mileage at 34 cents per mile. If
Howard drove 1,872.4 miles during June, how much will he receive from his employer?
1,872.4 miles $0.34 per mile = $636.62 (to the nearest penny)
53. A company has 295.75 square feet (sq ft) of leather from which it makes baseball gloves. If each glove requires 3.5
square feet of leather, how many full gloves can be made from the 295.75 square feet of leather?
295.75 sq ft ÷ 3.5 sq ft per glove = 84.5 gloves = 84 full gloves
Challenge problems
For Problems 54–56, we will figure your gas mileage. Your auto mileage at the beginning of a vacation is 23,578.9. You filled your
gas tank prior to leaving town and bought gas as follows during the trip: 14.6 gallons, 17.4 gallons, 11.7 gallons, 15.6 gallons, 17.1
gallons, and 9.4 gallons upon your return home. Your mileage at the end of your vacation was 26,007.4.
54. How many miles did you travel on the trip?
26,007.4 ending miles - 23,578.9 beginning miles = 2,428.5 miles
55. How many gallons (gal) of gas did you use?
14.6 gal + 17.4 gal + 11.7 gal + 15.6 gal + 17.1 gal + 9.4 gal = 85.8 gal
56. Calculate your average miles per gallon (mpg), to the nearest tenth, for the trip.
miles per gallon means “miles divided by gallons,” so: 2,428.5 miles ÷ 85.8 gal = 28.3 mpg
57. Suppose you rent a moving truck for 2 days. You are charged $49 per day plus 24 cents per mile. If the mileage was
34,122.8 when you picked up the truck and 34,428.3 when you returned the truck, what is the total amount you
will owe for the 2 days?
Miles: 34,428.3 - 34,122.8 = 305.5

59. A warehouse rents for $3,450 per month. Calculate the annual rent (i.e., how much rent is paid each year).
$3,450 12 months = $41,400
60. Refer to Problem 59. Assuming that the warehouse contains 9,720 square feet, calculate the annual rent per square foot.
Round your answer to the nearest penny.
Rent per square foot means “rent divided by square feet,” so $41,400 ÷ 9,720 sq ft = $4.26 per sq ft
61. Jewell Koga weighed 151 pounds 3 months ago and now weighs 124 pounds. How many pounds did Jewell lose?
151 lb - 124 lb = 27 lb
62. Refer to Problem 61. On average, how many pounds per month did she lose?
Pounds per month means “pounds divided by months,” so: 27 lb ÷ 3 months = 9 lb per month
63. You are thinking about buying a 16-unit apartment building. Ten of the units are rented for $700 per month, four are

65. The Yang family is planning a vacation. They will be gone 15 days. They estimate that lodging will cost an average of
$85 per night (they will need lodging for only 14 nights, since they will get back home on the fifteenth day). Meals will
average $24 per person per day (there are four people in the family). They will drive about 3,300 miles. Their vehicle
gets about 15 miles per gallon, and they estimate gas will cost an average of $1.89 per gallon. They want to allow $60
per day for entertainment. What total amount should they budget for their trip?
Lodging: 14 nights $85 =
$1,190.00
Meals:
Cost per day: 4 people $24 per day = $96
Cost for 15 days: $96 per day 15 days =

nearest tenth, you got on the trip.
word problem guide
1. Solving for
Miles per gallon
2. Known facts
Traveled 1,051.6 miles (13,904.2 miles - 12,852.6 miles = 1,051.6 miles)
Used 53.82 gallons of gas
