• S-Sit and organize materials for the lesson… Get your journal and a
sharpened pencil.
• E-Examine and follow teacher’s directions… On your next blank page,
write today’s date at the top. Title this page ~ Finding the volume of a
composite figures and surface area of nets.
•
T-Take the challenge! Write the CQ in journal below the title:

Steps to calculate the Volume of a
composite figure
Step 1: Find the volume of the first figure
Step 2: Find the volume of the second
figure
Step 3: Add the volumes together

How long do we have to
complete the activity:
35 mins
What do we do? With a
partner:
Find the area of each
composite shape shown.
Make sure to label your
work… name each shape,
find the total volume of each
shape, and then calculate the
total surface area.

Lateral vs. Total Surface Area of Nets
Total surface area ~ the sum of the surface areas of all
its faces.
Lateral surface area ~ the sum of the surface areas of all
its faces excluding the base(s) of the solid.

What do we do? With a
partner:
Find the lateral and total
surface area of each net
shown.
Remember ~ Lateral is
without the base(s) added,
Total is all faces
