A Cool Chemistry Project

A Cool Chemistry Project
Name______________________________________________________
Due Date: Feb. 20, 2013
Element:___________________________________________
1.
Research your element and find out the following:
____a. element name and symbol
____b. atomic mass
____c. atomic number
____d. 10 properties/uses
Ideas (you are not limited to these, they are just suggestions)
What does it look like ( color, state of matter)
Does it have an odor?
Is it poisonous?
Is it metallic/nonmetallic/radioactive?
Where is it found/who discovered it and when?
Is it flammable/fluorescent?
What are some compounds it forms?
What are some common uses of the element?
Why is the element important to humans?
2. Choose ONE of the following for your presentation:
Choice 1Attention all authors or lyricists
Using the information in your research, create a poem, story or song featuring your element.
-Your poem, story or song must have at least 20 lines.
-Ten facts about your element must be included.
-You may use a digital tool for this! (ex: VoiceThread, PhotoStory, Kerpoof, Scrapblog)
Choice 2
Attention all architects:
Using the information from your research, design a 3-D Bohr model featuring your element.
-The Bohr model must include a key indicating the number of protons, neutrons and electrons.
-Ten facts about your element must be typed or written in ink on a sheet to be submitted with your
model.
Choice 3
Attention all cartoonists:
Using the information from your research, design a poster featuring a cartoon character.
- The character should possess at least 10 of the characteristics of the element it represents.
Ex: The character’s t-shirt could have the element symbol and a tattoo could be the atomic
mass. The area surrounding the picture should include the remaining research information.
Make sure to include the name of your element and the chemical symbol somewhere on your
cartoon character. Your picture must be colored. This can be done digitally as well on
EDU.Glogster. Please see me if you would like for me to create an account for you.

Required information:
Element name and symbol
Atomic number
Atomic mass
10 uses/properties/facts
 Your uses/properties/facts must reflect thought and understanding. The information MUST be in your own words and if you choose
to include information like melting/boiling temperature, you must explain the significance of the information. Example: The melting
temperature of tungsten is ~6100 degrees Fahrenheit. This is significant because it is used as a filament in light bulbs because it
doesn’t melt easily.
