The Periodic Table of Elements 1 18 DMITRI MENDELEYEV (1834 - 1907) 1 HYDROGEN H 1 The Russian chemist, Dmitri Menedeleyev, was the first to observe that if elements were listed in order of atomic mass, they showed regular(periodical) repeating properties. He formulated his : Liquid at room temperature discovery in a periodic table of elements, now regarded as the backbone of modern chemistry. The crowning achievement of Mendeleyev’s periodic table lay in his prophecy of then, : Radioactive : Artificially made undiscovered elements. In 1869, the year published his periodic classification, the elements gallium, germanium, and scandium were unknown. Mendeleyev left spaces for them in his table 13 14 15 16 and even predicted their atomic masses and other chemical properties. Six years later, gallium 7 8 was discovered and his predictions wee found to be accurate. Other discoveries followed and 6 5 NITROGEN OXYGEN their chemical behavior matched that predicted by Mendeleyev. CARBON BORON N O This remarkable man, the youngest in a family of 17 children, has left the scientific community C B with a classification system so powerful that it became the cornerstone in chemistry teaching 10.81 12.01 14.01 16.00 and the prediction of new elements ever since. In 1955, element 101 was named after him: Md, Mendelevium. 1.01 2 2 3 3 LITHIUM Li 6.94 11 SODIUM Na 22.99 4 BERYLLIUM Be 9.01 4 5 39.1 24.31 20 CALCIUM Ca 40.08 37 38 RUBIDIUM STRONTIUM Rb Sr 85.47 87.62 55 CAESIUM Cs 6 7 132.91 56 BARIUM Ba 137.33 87 FRANCIUM Fr (223) 1 Atomic number = # of protons = # of electron HYDROGEN Element Name Atomic Mass = H Element Symbol # of protons + # of neutrons = 1.01 average mass of the isotopes Use of element 12 MAGNESIUM Mg 19 POTASSIUM K 88 RADIUM Ra (226) : Gas at room temperature : Solid at room temperature 3 4 5 21 SCANDIUM Sc 22 TITANIUM Ti 23 VANADIUM V 44.96 39 YTTRIUM Y 88.91 50.94 47.88 40 ZIRCONIUM Zr 91.22 92.91 72 Lanthanide HAFNIUM Series Hf 57-71 La -Lu Actinide Series 89-103 Ac-Lr 41 NIOBIUM Nb 178.49 104 RUTHERFORDIUM Rf (261) 73 TANTALUM Ta 180.95 105 DUBNIUM Db (262) 6 7 24 25 CHROMIUM MANGANESE Cr Mn 52.00 54.94 13 ALUMINUM Al 26.98 8 9 10 11 12 26 IRON Fe 27 COBALT Co 28 NICKEL Ni 29 COPPER Cu 30 ZINC Zn 55.85 58.93 58.69 63.55 42 43 44 45 MOLYBDENUM TECHNETIUM RUTHENIUM RHODIUM Mo Tc Ru Rh 46 PALLADIUM Pd 95.94 106.42 (98) 74 TUNGSTEN W 183.85 75 RHENIUM Re 186.21 106 107 SEABORGIUM BOHRIUM Sg Bh (263) (264) 101.07 76 OSMIUM Os 190.23 102.91 77 IRIDIUM Ir 192.22 47 SILVER Ag 107.87 78 PLATINUM Pt 195.08 79 GOLD Au 196.97 65.39 48 CADMIUM Cd 112.41 80 MERCURY Hg 200.59 31 GALLIUM Ga 69.72 28.09 32 GERMANIUM Ge 49 INDIUM In 114.82 81 THALLIUM Tl 204.38 50 TIN Sn 118.71 82 LEAD Pb 207.20 17 9 FLUORINE F 19.00 4.00 10 NEON Ne 20.18 17 18 15 16 ARGON PHOSPHORU SULPHUR CHLORINE Cl Ar S S 30.97 P 32.06 35.45 39.95 14 SILICON Si 72.61 2 HELIUM He 33 ARSENIC As 30.97 34 SELENIUM Se 78.96 51 52 ANTIMONY TELLURIUM Sb Te 121.76 83 BISMUTH Bi 208.98 127.60 84 POLONIUM Po (209) 35 BROMINE Br 79.90 53 IODINE I 126.90 85 ASTATINE At (210) 36 KRYPTON Kr 83.80 54 XENON Xe 131.29 86 RADON Rn (222) 118 108 109 110 111 112 113 114 115 117 116 HASSIUM MEITNERIUM DARMSTADTIUM ROENTGENIUM COPERNICIUM UNUNTRIUM FLEROVIUM UNUNPENTIUM LIVERMORIUM UNUNPSEPTIUM UNUNOCTIUM Uuo Hs Mt Ds Rg Uut Fl Uup Uus Lv Cn (265) (266) (281) (281) (285) (286) (289) (289) (291) (294) (294) : Alkai Metals : Alkaline Earth Metals : Metals : Metalloids 57 LANTHANUM La 138.91 58 CERIUM Ce 140.12 59 60 61 62 PRASEODYMIUM NEODYMIUM PROMETHIUM SAMARIUM Pr Nd Pm Sm 140.91 144.24 (145) 150.36 63 64 EUROPIUM GADOLINIUM Eu Gd 151.96 157.25 65 TERBIUM Tb 158.93 66 67 DYSPROSIUM HOLMIUM Dy Ho 162.50 164.93 68 ERBIUM Er 167.26 69 THULIUM Tm 168.93 70 YTTERBIUM Yb 173.04 71 LUTETIUM Lu 174.97 : Non-Metals : Halogens : Noble Gases : Lanthanides 89 ACTINIUM Ac (227) 90 91 92 THORIUM PROTACTINIUM URANIUM Th Pa U 232.04 231.04 238.03 93 94 95 NEPTUNIUM PLUTONIUM AMERICIUM Np Pu Am (237) (244) (243) 96 CURIUM Cm (247) 97 98 99 BERKELIUM CALIFORNIUM EINSTEINIUM Bk Cf Es (247) (251) (252) 100 FERMIUM Fm (257) 101 102 103 MENDELEVIUM NOBELIUM LAWRENCIUM Md No Lr (258) (259) (262) : Actinides Adapted from the following websites: http://www.sciencegeek.net/tables/DeltaBio.pdf , http://education.jlab.org/itselemental/tableofelements.pdf
