Since we are strong readers, we can also call this a character‛s demeanor or persona Can you think of any ways that an author reveals information about a character? Write them below 2 There are two main ways that an author personifies a character: direct and indirect. Direct Characterization is where the narrator tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” Indirect Characterization is where the narrator shows the audience the personality of a character. Strong readers are able to infer or make educated guesses about what the author is revealing about the character. Example: As Maria sat in the corner, she tucked her legs into her chest, wrapped her arms around her knees and thought to herself:“Maybe one day, I‛ll have the courage to speak up the way my classmates so effortlessly can. “ Her so-called friends scoffed at her timidity and teased her often. Maria‛s lips quivered at the idea of standing up to anyone, especially her friends. 3 Today, we‛re going to focus on indirect characterization.
