How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
All my preparations for my upcoming races (which includes Singapore Open) is ultimately to run well for the 2015
SEA Games.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
Currently, Singapore Open is one of the races to see my current form at this stage of my training for SEA Games. In
terms of expectations, I am just looking to run the best for my country!
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Hmm… Haha I really dunno how to answer this question, but I guess the reason why I am still running is my love and
passion for track and field and the honour and glory to be able to represent my country. All these and keeping in mind
the goals set out for SEA Games next year.
How did you get started in athletics?
Running since 9 years old, ever since primary school teacher made me switch from badminton to track and field, ever
since I won the school sports day!

How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
Preparation has been going as planned. Lots of rest and hoping for all to go well in the next few days.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
Hoping to break PB/SB in my races and ending it well for the relays!
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
I really have lots of respect for all the athletes who continue to push themselves and never give up whatever the
circumstances may be. Elite or not, I think the dedication they have is really admirable. Can’t name all cause that’ll
take forever haha! So I strive to be like them. My family, my coach and my friends are my “mentors” because they
never fail to support and encourage me, so they definitely inspire me in their own unique ways.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started athletics when I was in Temasek Primary School and I guess the love for it just grew from there, and still
growing (thankfully).
Edwin Chia Hui Kai will be representing Singapore in the Men 200 Meter Dash Open & Men 400 Meter Dash Open at
the 76th Singapore Open Track & Field Championships 2014. Here’s is his profile awareness of our selected National
Athletes for the competition.
Age: 23 years old
Weight: 66kg
Height: 179cm
Coach: Shathik Mag
PB:
200m – 22.37s
400m – 50.89s
How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
This will be the first time I have competed having gone through a seasonal type of training with my coach and I feel
that the hard work put in will show itself when it counts. Over the short duration that I have been in track and field I
have had the great opportunity to race in a neighboring country to expose myself to various athletes and the climates
that they train in to better prepare myself for future races. There is always something to improve upon even if the
timings remain the same or even increase slightly, as long as there is progress, there should be no doubt that things
will come together at the end for a better race.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
There’s reason to believe that I am able to break my own personal records in both the 200m and 400m with the
training that I have gone through. Racing against other athletes from various countries will be superb exposure and
will test the mental tenacity as much as my physical fitness. The confidence of a better timing should not be disturbed
by the presence of audiences or competitors since every race is and always will be just you against the clock.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Tyson Gay has always been my favorite track star in the world of athletics; known for his impressive top end speed
which has proven to be able to keep up to the paces of Usain Bolt in Berlin 2009 in the 100m final. I enjoy the way he
is serious and passionate about his sport and his determination towards improving himself. In a sort of parallel, he
has similar race strengths and weakness having a slower start but a strong finish as I do.
However I am more impressed when athletes with totally different builds are able to come close to world record
times, athletes such as Warren Weir from Jamaica, Trayvon Bromell from USA and Yoshihide Kiryu from Japan give
me hope that there is absolute power in honing good techniques and execution of it within races.
How did you get started in athletics?
I never once took part in a true sprint event until it was the tail end of my National Service where I had the chance to
take part in a 10 x 400m race within my camp. It was the first time I wore spikes which I had borrowed and it felt
awkward under me. After the 10 man relay I felt an adrenaline rush from the whole event and that experience stuck
with me for a long time. It was no surprised when I was wondering what extra-curricular activity to choose in
university that I naturally gravitated towards track and field. I pursued the idea and found my current coach eventually
and began training with him.

back into the groove of things.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
I’m hoping to do a season best for Singapore Open.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
I’ve always been a fan of Kajsa Bergqvist because she’s an amazing jumper (She’s only 1.75m and jumped 2.08m).
I’ve also been following Blanka Vlasic’s comeback very closely and she’s been a real inspirational figure.
How did you get started in athletics?
In secondary 1, I represented my class in High Jump for sports day because nobody else wanted to participate in it. I
realised that I wasn’t too bad at it and the school got me to take part in National Schools.
Loh Guo Pei will be representing Singapore in the Men 400 Meter Dash Open at the 76th Singapore Open Track &

Height: 168cm
Coach: G.Elangovan

How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
There was minimal preparation leading up to this Singapore Open as i had recently been away for my Summer
School programme by NTU, I was away in Korea for a good 5 weeks which dampens my physical fitness slightly.
Therefore my training was disrupted somewhat and hoping that with just 3 – 4 weeks of training I will still be able to
perform to a decent standard.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
I hope i will be able to come close to my Personal best (sub 50s) or better my Personal best for the 400m for this
season.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Currently I do not have anyone in particular. But there are ones that drives me to running and training hard, they are
my coach, training group and my love for running.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started out Athletics only when i was in Hua Yi Secondary School, Secondary 2. It was through the regular
announcements of sporting and academic achievements, then I realised the Track and Field and Cross Country team
was very strong back in 2004-05, clinching top positions. Therefore it spur me on to test my physical and mental
strength to make an attempt to be part of the School team and hoping to becoming National champions like my
teammates Yvonne Lin and Chua Khai Leng.

Coach: James Wong
PB: Discus Throw – 45.91m
How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
Coming to the last competition of my season for the year, its getting pretty intense! In this last stretch, I’ve been able
to manage the pressure and competition anxiety better than before, thanks to the competition experience I’ve been
gaining over the past few months. The focus in trainings these few days are in fine tuning the best feel I can get for
my throws. Its the hardest, but most important part in throwing the discus.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
As in every competition I go for, there is no telling what kind of results to expect. But what I do expect is for me to
bring on my A-Game, and do my very best. There’s a good line up of foreign athletes this time around, and I’m
looking forward to pitching myself against them. I’ve been working towards Singapore Open for the past few months.
This is it!
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
I’m a Christian and God is my biggest inspiration. There’s a verse in the Bible from Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you
do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men”.
I keep this bible verse close to my heart as a reminder to myself – that everyday I train as a thanksgiving to all that
God has blessed and provided me with to be the athlete I am today. That, is my biggest motivation.
My other inspiration is my senior in throwing – Wan Lay Chi. I’ve looked up to her since I was in secondary school
and have always admired how dedicated she was to the sport. I hope to be as good as her one day.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started in primary school because I’m naturally bigger in build. However, I only got serious about throwing in
Secondary school when I met my first throwing coach. I’ve done athletics ever since, changing to the discus event
only 4 years ago, when I met my current coach – Mr James Wong. I’ve never looked back since and I’m amazed at
how far I’ve come in such a short time.

I do not really have a particular idol but I was fortunate to be able to meet and interact with

character even though she’s so famous. I believe that staying humble is a very important
character trait that everyone should have, regardless of how famous they are.

I got started in this sport when my primary school track and field coach spotted me running
during the schools sports day. He encouraged me to join the track team when I was in primary 4

My preparations are in view of the 2015 SEA Games. The Singapore Open will be useful for me

What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
I haven’t raced the 800m in 3 years, so not really sure how I’ll do. But I’ll always give my best.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
As you get older, you tend to look up to people who are in your shoes, experiencing the same
struggles as you. In that regard, I do respect athletes like Felix Sanchez & Chris Brown, both of
whom have rolled back the years & have continued to be a dominant force at the highest level
despite their advancing age.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started athletics when i was in JC with my coach Melvin Tan. Back then I was considered quite
a late starter. But I guess that’s one of the reasons I’m still in the sport today. I was never trained
to the point of burnt out just for national schools.

Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
I look up to Mr C Kunalan- he ran a superb 10.38s 40 over years ago, the support then was
minimal but what was driving him was his talent, his passion and his focus to break the national
record! I hope to emulate him!
How did you get started in athletics?
Elias Park Primary’s PE teacher spotted me with fast legs! There are 2 areas that make a sprinter
fast! Quick legs + big stride! I had a very fast frequency at that tender age and it was a natural
progression to try out sprints! I began to love it since.

Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Nigel Amos is my idol. It is because he earned a silver medal in London Olympics when he was
just 18. He was one of the youngest competitor there. It shows that age doesn’t determine
anything. That’s an inspiration, it teaches me not to be afraid to compete with those elder than
me. To believe in myself.
How did you get started in athletics?
While I followed my dad for some training sessions, I got interested when I was training
alongside. So I decided to take part in competitions.

learning to strike a balance!
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
I would hope to be able to achieve a height close to or above my PB!
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Renaud Lavillenie. His build is much closer to that of an Asian rather than the conventional tall
and muscular world class athletes. Hence he serves as an inspiration for me as height wouldn’t
be a limiting factor to my progress!
How did you get started in athletics?
I was in secondary 1 when they held trials for pole-vaulting. I found that it was an interesting
sport and something fresh and nothing I’ve tried before! I’ve been in the sport ever since!

How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
Coming off the calf injury sustained 2 weeks ago, the recovery and training sessions are
progressively good. I’m in the transition of the aerobic and anaerobic phase, so the mileage is
still quite high, keeping the intensity moderately hard.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
Doing a 2.38 marathon last month, I would say I’m aerobically fit, probably in a better 10000m
racing shape as compared to the 800m/1500m that I’ll doing this coming Singapore Open. But
the high level of competition for the meet provides a good opportunity to learn and race with the
best middle distance runners in Asia. I’m targeting to break my 1.55 done at the Asian Indoor
Champs for the 800m and get close to the 4minutes mark for the 1500m.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
No particular person in mind. But my fellow training partners have always been a great inspiring
and motivating factor.

encourages me mentally and spiritually. Mr Tan is an inspiration to many I know.

I’m expecting a PB at Singapore Open. I hope the steep level of competition will spur me on to
break my PB.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Stefan Holm is my idol. I started out as a high jumper and whenever I looked for videos on
YouTube to learn the technique, I always saw him in the videos. He isn’t very tall, unlike most
of the other high jumpers. Yet he still managed to clear the bar each time it rose. I’m not very tall
myself so it’s really inspiring to see living testament that height isn’t a barrier.
How did you get started in athletics?
It was during a sports camp in poly that I had my first experience in high jump. I immediately
knew it was what I wanted to do for the next 3 years. Since young I’ve always had an interest in
jumping over things. I would challenge myself to see if I could reach a road sign or jump over a
certain number of chairs. I guess what enticed me was the challenge of clearing an “obstacle”.

could.

I don’t have anyone in particular as inspiration, but it has always been my goal to push and fight
against myself to achieve better.
How did you get started in athletics?
I’ve been in athletics since in Primary School all the way to Polytechnic. Didn’t compete while
in National Service. It’s always been my passion, and I enjoy doing it.

How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
Very consistent so far. I have been doing my sprint drills and strength training these days. Ever
since coming back from Glasgow (Commonwealth Games), I learnt a lot from it and will apply
these skills to Singapore Open.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
There are a few expectations that I have in mind. One of it is to be in the finals and hopefully,
one of the podium finishers. I don’t expect myself to run fast as I will also be competing in Asian
Games next month. I am doing my best to stay injury free until Asian Games as it is more
important in my opinion.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
There are a lot of people that I look up to. Being it be my mother, coach and friends. But one of
the athletes that I truly look up to is Liu Xiang. He is a Olympian hurdler and once hold both
world records in 110m in Athens and Beijing Olympics. But during the London Olympics, he
crashed out during the race. I admire is perseverance as he still continued limping with pulled
hamstring to the finish line even though he fell at the first hurdle. He taught me to persevere until
the end no matter what.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started when I was in kindergarten. I always love playing “catching” with my classmates. I love
the feeling when I manage to catch them quickly and tap them. It always reminded me that I can
chase them. From that day on, I started practicing on my run ups and ever since then, I started
running more.

Preparation is going as per my coach’s expectation. So far the season is going smooth and i’m
very excited to be racing with Southeast Asia’s and some of Asia’s best.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
My expectations would be to definitely better my personal best of 50.77s and 2:01.82 for 400m
and 800m respectively. A bonus would be to break the 50s and 2min barrier if I’m feeling good
during race!
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Locally i definitely look up to seniors like Kenneth Khoo and the old timers like my school
coach Hamkah Afik. They show us that the only way to get results is through hardwork and
determination and that there are no excuses to be successful. Besides, the timings they produce
are crazy! Even at the age where athletes usually retire, we youngsters who are more active are
finding it an uphill challenge to even come close to them. They are humble athletes that deserve
respect both on and off the track.
How did you get started in athletics?
I have always loved running since i was in Primary One. I would play children games at the void
deck with my neighbours like block catching, police & thief, ice & water and Ali Bomb! I loved
outrunning my friends and I had the stamina too so I asked my dad which CCA offers purely
running and he said Athletics. I joined from Primary 3-6 under the tutelage of Mr Jacter Singh
(P3-4) (Kids Athletics) and Mr Patrick Zhender (P5-6) aka Santa Clause who exposed me to the
sprints and hurdles. Training was all about fun and games and not about producing results. In
secondary one I met a new coach who is my current coach (Donovan Ong). I only started serious
training (setting goals & targets) until Sec 2 where i started to progress steadily and win a few
track and field series. Since then I’ve never looked back and the rest is history.

Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
Actually look up to Kenneth Khoo (400m national athlete). Given that we are in the same
profession and he still managed to maintain his form, moreover after a serious injury. Also, as
we know one loses speed as we aged but Kenneth was the reason why I still felt that I can still
come back to 1500m and 800m.
How did you get started in athletics?
All started with me being rejected from NPCC in Secondary 1. During PE, came in first for a run
and was asked to join T&F by the teacher, Mdm Foong Sau Wan, who was the T&F teacher incharge then. I got serious only after ‘O’ level when I joined Ms. Tan Yew Ling as I got inspired
by her.

determination.
How did you get started in athletics?
Ironically, I only began exercising in an attempt to pass my 2.4km NAPFA test in Secondary
One, which I initially failed with a timing of 21 minutes. In time, long distance grew to become a
passion of mine, and I joined Track in JC1 at Hwa Chong Institution. It was there that I
discovered racewalking.

The preparation for leading to Sing open has been going well. Because of the Commonwealth
Games, we’re getting back to our optimum form after the short rest we had.
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
It would be a tough fight, many athletes from other countries that are participating, are also
headed to the Asian Games, so I’m sure that we would make out the best of this situation, and
use it better our timings.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
I don’t have anyone in particular, I would just say watching all those elite athletes competing &
running their hearts out, makes me want to believe that I too have the capability to not give up.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started in Primary School. I competed for my house at the annual sports day, then i tried out for
the trails in Singapore Sports School, and officially began track in Secondary One.

sure about the advancement to finals or not but overall hoping for a good timing for all events.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
I look up to a few like Allyson Felix, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, even Adam Gemili from
England. As to who my mentor is, it’s definitely my sister and father. They are the best people to
come to with regards to my running and other things as well. They really take care of me.
How did you get started in athletics?
I started because the coach in my primary school, who was Mr Lim Tiang Kee picked me out
after I ran a 400m and 100m at my schools annual sports day. So it all started from there.

How’s your preparation leading up to Singapore Open?
-
What is your expectation in terms of results at Singapore Open?
It’ll be a very exciting competition because everyone should be of the same standard or close to
one another as I’m sure they are preparing for Asian Games too so the expectation in terms of the
results is to be as close to other counties as possible.
Who do you look up to (eg idol, mentor) for inspiration?
My two training partners, Dipna and Piriyah. Their resilience and determination to strive harder
and do their best in everything.
How did you get started in athletics?
My love for this sport started because of my dad. He first introduced jogging and running to me
when I was younger as a way to keep fit. I love how running is so simple yet challenging when
you do it competitively. If I was not a track and field athlete, I would choose to be a footballer. I
have a strong affinity for sports. I cannot imagine living without it.
