Face-to-Face
For face-to-face courses, instructors use the
Communication Manual and iLrn. The printed
Communication Manual provides concise instruction
and formative activities in vocabulary, functional
language, and grammar. Students improve their
retention of these concepts by completing practice
activities in iLrn. They are then prepared to use
these concepts in the next face-to-face session with
the Communication Manual’s unique
communicative activities.
Hybrid
For courses with fewer face-to-face meetings, students study and practice vocabulary and grammatical
concepts in iLrn to allow for communicative use of
the language in the limited face-to-face sessions. The
Exprésate communicative activities in the Communication
Manual appear on colored pages, which allows
instructors and students to quickly locate them.
Fully Online
For online or distance-learning courses, Conectados
facilitates a balanced, yet dynamic course: interactive
presentations of vocabulary, grammar, and culture,
auto-graded practice exercises, individual, pair, or
small group voice-chat activities, skills development
activities, as well as targeted assessments. Students
do not need the printed Communication Manual,
although they may appreciate using it as an offline

These activities proceed from simple recognition to controlled
production. Students have the opportunity to practice using the
material in a variety of meaningful contexts; activities include
visual, audio, or written prompts. The Practice it! step is
included for those content types, such as grammar and
vocabulary, where varied practice is necessary for thorough
comprehension and retention of the material. All Practice it!
activities are computer-gradable.
4. Use it!
In this step, students have the opportunity to apply their new
knowledge in a variety of contexts in a more personalized and
open-ended way. Activity formats include individual speaking and
partner chat, open-ended writing, video production, web search,
and multimedia discussion forum (Share It!) participation. Share It!
activities allow students to share videos, photos, audio, and
writing with their classmates and also to comment on each
other’s posts.
Practice it! activities in grammar sections also feature
formative feedback; once students have submitted their answers,
they receive specific messages that explain how to reach the
correct answer.
In the Communication Manual, the activities in ¡Exprésate!,
Nuestra comunidad, and Síntesis form part of the Use it!
learning path, so students in face-to-face. Hybrid , or flipped
courses will continue practicing their self-expression there.

While studying in Mexico City, you decide to take a trip to Los Cabos during one of the holiday
breaks. It’s time to make your arrangements for this excursion.
Go online and access sites to reserve a flight, to book a hotel, and to explore activities in
Los Cabos. Sample links are provided below.
Complete the charts with information from the online sites.
Take notes and be prepared to discuss your travel plans and preferences in class.
