Making Shapes Come To Life!
We have moved on to the next and final unit of math for the year! Geometry is the new
unit, which we are describing, comparing, and constructing 2D and 3D shapes and
exploring the relationships between them.
Thoughts shared...
“A 2D shape is flat and a 3D shape comes out at me!”
“When I draw a triangle on a piece of paper, I see 3 points. But when I look at a 3D
triangle, it has 6 points.”
“A cube has 8 points and 6 faces!”
“Even though the block is in the shape of a triangle, it has triangle, rectangle and
square faces.”
The children constructed their
own boxes!
Of course we had to add color and
creativity!
Our thoughts continued...
“Well, if 2D shapes are flat on paper, we can
never draw 3D shapes because then they will
be “flat.”
“No, we just have to draw them looking like
they are popping out at us.”
“First I drew a square, and then I drew lines around
the square to show it is not flat. I also drew a
triangle and then added one line on the side to show
the shape has more faces than just one.”
Time to be Architects!
Our goal at the end of the unit is to
construct a city with buildings, using
3D shapes.
Therefore, we practiced drawing
individual 3D shapes (above) and
now we are working on drawing a
building of 3D shapes.
The children are really enjoying this
unit! I look forward to more
explorations and discoveries of 2D
and 3D shapes next week.
