1685 Highland Avenue, Room 6169 Madison, WI 53705-2281 You Make a Difference December 2016 Dear Alum, As an alumnus of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, you are familiar with the comprehensive educational, clinical training and innovative research opportunities that are available at the University of Wisconsin in the specialty of Orthopedics. Your experience here, and the work that you are doing now, are testaments to the more than 65 years that the Department has been training outstanding orthopedic surgeons. Because of our commitment to bring the best and brightest researchers to our laboratories, and then subsequently support them in their work, we established The Freedom of Movement Fund in 2013. This Fund supports our physicians and scientists as they initiate and expand research that helps to translate results from our laboratories into effective new clinical applications. To date, we have raised over $1.25 million for The Freedom of Movement Fund. Our active development board of grateful patients, community leaders, surgeons, physicians and staff are making plans for another year of success toward our goal of $2 million by the end of 2017. We are now only four years into our mission and already planning to distribute grants from this fund to our researchers as we work to move the science of orthopedics forward. Some examples of our ongoing and future research include work in the areas of: • • • • • Stem cell and regenerative medicine Sports-related concussion management and prevention The effects of sports specialization on injury rate Biomechanical analysis Osteoporosis prevention Please consider the impact your training has had on you and how you can personally advance the future of orthopedics. We encourage you to remain connected to the Department not only through professional consultations and social events, but also through a financial contribution. Your tax-deductible gift, in any amount, will help move the Department and the University of Wisconsin forward by ensuring that researchers have the necessary resources to discover the next breakthrough in orthopedics. Thank you for your consideration and, On Wisconsin! Advancing the Future of Orthopedics The Freedom of Movement Fund Musculoskeletal issues affect millions of children and adults. Although great progress is being made in preventing and treating orthopedic conditions, there is still much to discover and understand. With its comprehensive clinical program and strong basic and translational research focus, the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health has an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate orthopedic conditions that prevent people of all ages from living active, healthy lives. Today, the Department is recognized worldwide for its leading-edge orthopedic and rehabilitation research. Scientists are using nanofiber scaffolds and tissue engineering to regenerate ligaments and tendons. Our faculty has pioneered exciting advances in surgical techniques, such as anterior cruciate ligament repair and artificial disc replacement. Studies conducted here are not only helping prevent concussion in school-aged athletes nationally, they are also changing the way children are treated after concussion. The Department has the infrastructure, faculty commitment and history of excellence to continue to make significant contributions to the fields of orthopedics, rehabilitation and sports medicine. Securing necessary funding is critical for the Department to conduct orthopedic research. Unfortunately, federal dollars for medical research continue to decline. To provide ongoing support for the Department’s talented researchers, we have launched The Freedom of Movement Fund. Contributors to the fund help dramatically accelerate the translation of laboratory experiments through clinical trials to patient applications.
