Cuyahoga Lodge #17 Order of the Arrow
Greater Cleveland Council, BSA

Volume 8: Issue 2
Are You an OA Troop Representative?
You might be wondering what a Troop
Representative is. An Order of the Arrow Troop
Representative is a youth liaison serving between
the local OA lodge or district and his troop. It is an
official leadership position within the troop and
boys can earn time towards their leadership rank
requirements, just as with Den Chief, Troop
Scribe, or any of the other leadership positions.
There are numerous possibilities for the
job description of the OA Representative. The
most basic tasks of the Representative is to
coordinate service opportunities within the unit, to
coordinate unit involvement with the Order of the
Arrow, including Unit Elections, Camp
Promotions, and Inductions.
You might be wondering who can serve as
a OA Troop Representative. Any scout who is
under the age of 18 can serve as the OA
Representative for the troop, provided he is a
dues-paid member of the Order of the Arrow. He
should be appointed by the Senior Patrol Leader
and will be a member of the Patrol Leaders'
Council and attend lodge and district events.
In his troop, he serves as a communication
and programmatic link to the Arrowman and adult
leaders and Scouts who are not presently members
of the Order. He does this in a fashion that
strengthens the mission of the lodge and purpose
of the Order. By setting a good example, he
enhances the image of the Order as a service arm
to his troop.
For more information on the Order of the
Arrow Troop Representative program, contact
your local district chief or Top 5 member.

POINTS OF INTEREST
Fall Fellowship!!!!!!!!
The Closing of the OA year is
quickly approaching. “South of
the Border” Weekend will be an
example of “Mexico’s finest”.
Elections are integral for this
event. I am begging you that at
least four people come from every
district.!! If you want your district
to be represented in the upcoming
season, have somebody there.
Unit elections become very
difficult when there is no one to
conduct them. This is a youth run
organization, it is not an adult
advisors job to organize elections

The Section C5A Conclave, featuring the theme, “Those who love
the haunts of nature..” occurred May 16-18, 2003. Over 200 Scouts
and Scouters came from Ohio and West Virginia to camp at
Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV. “OA University” made its debut as
a training structure. An Army helicopter dropped in for a visit
during the day. After lunch, we moved from learning to more of just
having fun. There was a midway filled with anything and
everything an Arrowman would want to do. The Ohio Mountain
Men had a great display. They had pioneering events such as,
tomahawk, spear, and knife-throwing. Also, there were inflatable
games featuring a mechanical bull, jousting, and a bungee cord
race. Elections were held for new section officers. An excellent
dinner was served followed by a Powwow and Drum competition.
Alex Alten earned first place in Fancy Dance and Mike Conlin
earned first place in Old-Style competition. The evening finished
off with a “Crazy Auction”, ice cream sundaes and a “hoe down”.
We all had a blast and hope to see everyone at next year’s

Winding Rivers VC
Brothers,
over the past summer we have grown as a lodge. We
inducted over 100 new members and had over thirty Brotherhood
conversions. The Ordeals were a blast for everyone. We made
progress by making Cuyahoga Lodge more visible at Summer
Camp, by having the Crooked River Dancer perform at the Opening
Campfire and conducting a Call Out. The Lodge Checklist, which
was presented at Winter Banquet, had many but not all items
checked off. I would like to congratulate all new members and
Brotherhood members. To all of you “One Beader’s”, I would like
to see you at an upcoming event. Lets look back on the year as “the
ship in the middle of its turn.”

CHIEFLY SPEAKING
Brothers,
Our lodge has accomplished a great deal over the past few months.
We inducted many new members at three successful weekends, and already
advanced twice as many new brotherhood members than converted last
year. Most importantly we were involved in Beaumont Summer Camp
opening campfire. There had been a lot of talk the last few years about
increasing the lodges “visibility” to the average scout. The dance team
opened all four weeks of summer camp with a short performance. Also the
ceremonial team preformed Callout ceremonies for Scouts elected this year.
I was very pleased to be involved in these successful performances and I
hope the tradition will continue, as it enriches Beaumont and our lodge.
Also, I would encourage all youth to consider taking a position in
the lodge leadership. We need new faces and ideas to keep the lodge
running. Feel free to call and find out what a position is all about and then
come out to Fall Fellowship and run. I know that my experiences on the
executive team have been some of the best opportunities Scouting has
provide me with.
Yours in the Spirit of Uncas,
Alex Harnocz
ADVISORS CORNER
Dear Arrowmen,
Welcome to our 49 new brothers who made it through the April
Ordeal. Our “Godfathers” expect great things from you. A big hand goes
to the 19 new Brotherhood members, the most in recent years. I guess all
those telephone calls made you an “offer that you couldn’t refuse”.
At the June Ordeal we put 23 additional candidates through their
paces. We also had 5 members take their Brotherhood. Who will ever
forget the toilet seat horseshoes or the crazy golf?
I am pleased to say that our Crooked River Dancers participated in
the opening campfire at Beaumont this summer.
Please encourage those scouts in your Troop that got elected this
year but have not yet done their Ordeal to come to the one taking place
August 22 to 24.
Yours in Brotherhood,
Mr. Merik
