Many Americans celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
with more enthusiasm than much of Ireland
itself, so enjoy these bits of Irish wit and
wisdom as you celebrate on March 17:
“May your glass be ever full, may the roof
over your head be always strong, and may you
be in heaven half an hour before the devil
knows you’re dead.”
—Irish toast
“May you always walk in sunshine. May you
never want for more. May Irish angels rest their
wings right beside your door.”
—Irish Blessing
“May you live as long as you want, and never
want as long as you live.”
—Irish Blessing
“Here’s to a long life and a merry one. A
quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and
an honest one. A cold beer—and another one!”
—Irish toast

Beyond the Rainbow
Despite what leprechauns might
have you believe, there is no pot of
gold waiting for you at the end of
the rainbow. Since it’s an image
and not a physical object, the
rainbow doesn’t have a beginning
or end. As you move, your
perception of the rainbow changes,
and it may even disappear entirely.

Windy Planet
If you think March is windy where
you live, consider this: Gusts on
Neptune, the windiest planet in
our solar system, blow at more
than 1,200 mph.
No matter how you slice it,
pizza is a popular food pick.
Whether it’s thin crust or
deep dish, traditional or
trendy, about 3 billion pizzas
are sold each year.

3 Things You
Need to Know
1) Walnuts are
one of the oldest
tree foods known
to man, dating
back to 7,000 B.C.
Their medicinal
uses and other
health benefits
were frequent
topics among
ancient Greek and
Roman writers.
2) High in
protein, fiber, B
vitamins,
antioxidants and
omega-3 fatty
acids, walnuts are
a smart snack
choice.
3) Walnuts were
one of the first
foods to receive a
qualified health
claim about their
heart-health
benefits from the
U.S. Food and
Drug
Administration.

Leprechaun
Lore
The Irish fairy
known as a
leprechaun is a
familiar figure
during St.
Patrick’s Day
celebrations.
Here’s more about
this wee little
man:
Leprechauns
are
shoemakers,
and legends say
they can be
detected by the
tap-tap-tapping
of a tiny
cobbler’s
hammer.
Nowadays
leprechauns are
said to always
wear green, but
early tales have
them dressed
in red.
If a leprechaun
is caught, he
will offer three
wishes in
exchange for
his freedom.

Diamonds In the Sky
Here on Earth, rainy days are a rite of spring, but you’d never expect
diamonds to fall from the sky. However, that may be just what is
happening on some other planets in our solar system. Scientists
speculate that during storms on Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune and
Uranus, lightning transforms methane in the atmosphere into
graphite. As the graphite falls, intense pressure transforms it into
diamonds. Although the hot temperatures of Saturn and Jupiter
cause the diamonds to melt quickly, the cooler climates of Neptune
and Uranus allow the precious stones to stay solid, even as they
reach the planets’ cores.

Spring
Eggs-periment
You may have
heard that, due to
the alignment of
the Earth and the
sun on the first
day of spring, this
is the only day of
the year that you
can stand an egg
on its end. The
truth is, you can
do this trick
anytime—it just
takes a lot of

Spring Is on the Way

spring and the vernal equinox,
when the hours of daylight and
darkness are nearly equal.
Each month, we will have a new trivia question asking the flower for
each state. If you think you know the answer, write it on a piece of
paper and turn it in to the Lifestyle Department. All correct answers
will be entered in a drawing and the winner will be announced at the
resident meeting. Good luck!!
