3. It took 3 years to end the rebellion – 20,000 Filipinos killed

Foreign Influence on China
- China was a weak nation controlled by European countries.

1. John Hay (Sec. of State) wanted imperialist nations to
share China
China’ss trading rights w/ the U.S.
a) Didn’t want one country to have a monopoly on China
b) Other countries reluctantly agreed – needed trade w/ the U.S.
B Boxer Rebellion

1. Europeans dominated China’s large cities.
2. China despised the “foreign devils.”
3. A secret group “Boxers” began to kill foreigners (missionaries, etc)
4. Aug. 1900 – troops from BR, FR, U.S., GER, JAP stopped rebellion
C. Protecting American Rights
1. Open Door Policy
a) U.S. economy depends on exports
b) U.S. can intervene to keep the door open
c) Worried that closing an area from U.S. products would
threaten the survival of the U.S.
Impact of Territorial Gains
1. Pres. McKinley (Imperialist) was reelected.
- U.S. citizens supported expansion.
2. A few disagreed, but the U.S. was growing.
