Log a Load for Kids Log Auction
Thursday, October 6, 2016
Tim Pahl, Secretary
CONTRIBUTORS:
Please join the Mountain Loggers Cooperative Association and WVU Children's Hospital for its
Twentieth Annual Ted Harriman Memorial Log a Load for Kids Log Auction. Proceeds go
directly to West Virginia University Children's Hospital on behalf of participating forestry and
wood products companies and individuals.
WVU Children's Hospital, in Morgantown, WV, provides specialty maternal, infant, and pediatric
care for families in West Virginia and the surrounding region. It offers care to high-risk
mothers, premature infants, and children with life-threatening conditions.
The hospital includes a pediatric and adolescent ward, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and a suite of labor-delivery-post-partum rooms for the
mother and infant. An activity room and teen-room facilitate the rehabilitation of our young
patients.
The Auction is scheduled for Thursday, October 6, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Newlon’s
International Sales, LLC, in Elkins, West Virginia, as part of the Mountain State Forest
Festival. Loads of logs and other donated items will be sold at auction under the names of the
contributors. Last year, over $90,000 was raised for the hospital with this auction, and over 90
companies and individuals contributed. BBQ Lunch to follow, sponsored by Newlon’s
International Sales, LLC.
For accepting deliveries of donated products, the log yard at Newlon’s will be open on

Following are options for making contributions. For your convenience and in order for
appropriate arrangements to be made by the planners, accompanying this letter is a
form that we request be used for making a contribution.
•
A contribution of pulpwood or peelers can be made as a Phantom Load, sold unseen at
the auction and delivered by the contributor directly from the logging site to the
purchasing mill following the auction. Or, a load of pulpwood or peelers can be
delivered the day of the auction, sold on the truck, and delivered to the purchaser later
that same day.

Trees are our renewable resource, but children are our most precious resource.
•
Deliveries of sawlogs can be made the Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the sale. They
will be scaled, graded, and a fair market value determined, unless the contributor
provides this information. The products will then be sold at the auction.
•
Contributions of individual, or less than a full load, of veneer logs, to be picked up at
your yard, are being coordinated by: Walt Graham 304-642-9724
John Talbott
304-642-5868
Paul Dohner 717-315-9815
•
Arrangements have also been made with Weyerhaeuser Company that will allow
contributors to deliver loads of either peelers to Buckhannon or pulpwood to Flatwoods
and have the payment made directly to the Load a Load for Kids campaign on behalf of
the contributor or have the payment split between the contributor and Log a Load for
Kids in any percentage to be determined by the contributor. If either of these options
is used, the contributor is asked to contact Mark Shreve at 304-203-5647
immediately after the load is delivered and provide him with a ticket number so
the appropriate payments can be made.
•
If you cannot make a contribution of logs or other roundwood products, please
consider a monetary pledge or a donation of another item for the auction. In the
past, we've received and sold items such as firewood, rustic fencing, flooring, wood
pellets, log coating and equipment, skidder tire chains, WVU sports memorabilia,
portable generators, and finished furniture, to name only a few.
•
Cash contributions are also welcomed. Please use the accompanying form and mail to:

The generosity of this industry has been nothing less than phenomenal over the past years,
providing the Log a Load for Kids program with over $1.6 million for our local children’s hospital.
This is truly testimony to the generosity and community commitment of the forest industry.
Please consider giving as you are able, and join us this year. If you've contributed in the past,
please consider recruiting a new contributor or challenging another company to match your
contribution.
This is a great opportunity to demonstrate the commitment of the area’s forest industry to all
resources, as well as an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your own commitment to your
community and to the health of our children.
For more information, please contact Tim Pahl, MLCA Secretary, at 304-276-0946.
Trees are our renewable resource, but children are our most precious resource.
BUYERS:
Payment arrangements are flexible: company check on the day of the sale or by other
arrangements.
This is a good opportunity to show the generous spirit of our forest products community and to
help both yourself and a worthy cause at the same time. So, put it on your calendar now so that
you can join us.
Even if you are not interested in buying, please stop by, visit with friends, have some
refreshments, and learn about our annual Log Auction.
