® Competition Bridle ® William Micklem William On Charli e’s Aunt 1967 “We need to be more open to change and to allowing a good idea to give way to a better idea. My philosophy is never think you can’t do something just because it hasn’t been done before.” William Micklem BHS fellow, international coach, author and renowned horseman A better way forward The Micklem bridle is truly designed from the inside out, using the shape of the skull itself. Traditional headwear can cause pressure on the main areas of the horse’s head. The Micklem bridle avoids these areas and subsequent pressure or discomfort. • Top and Bottom Jaw - when looking at the skull of any horse it is obvious that the top jaw is considerably wider than the lower jaw and it therefore protrudes. This means that tight, cranked up nosebands and traditional lunge cavessons can cause huge discomfort and damage to the sensitive tissue inside the mouth. This is why we have a uniquely positioned noseband shape with diagonal side pieces avoiding the protruding molars and without any inward pressure. • Pressure on the main motor and sensory nerves - these nerves exit to the outside of the skull at a point just underneath the normal position of the noseband. Continual pressure in this area can cause discomfort as well as numbness to the nose and lips. It can also damage blood vessels and other tissue, this is why the positioning and fitting of the Micklem bridle completely avoids the exit point of the facial nerves and any inward pressure in this area. • Poll pressure - we have a widened, shaped and padded headpiece with no separate uncomfortable noseband strap. • Pressure or discomfort on delicate and fragile nasal bones – these should never be subjected to the pressure of low fitting nosebands. This is why we have the front piece sitting on the nose higher than a normal dropped noseband. • Tongue/Bars of mouth - when looking where the tongue and bit have to fit within the narrow lower jaw, it is obvious why so many horses understandably object to strong pressure on the tongue and bars - this is why we have a tongue protection system on both the Competition bridle and Multibridle, that transfers any extra pressure on to the nose. Our bitless bridle options on the Multibridle are truly effective in avoiding all pressure in this area. Suitable for horses and riders at every level, from professionals to pleasure & pony riders, the Micklem bridle is loved by horses, loved by trainers and is the most comfortable, effective and flexible bridle ever designed. 03 More comfortable, more humane Relieves pressure on the sensitive parts of the head and eliminates pain, numbness and damage to nerves, veins and muscles. 2. 1. Attach one bit strap to each side of your bit with the buckle to the outside and in the upright position 4. Attach the bit straps to the side rings on the cheek strap so that the bit hangs in the normal way. 5. Attach your reins to the bit, and you’re ready to tack up! Fitting your Rambo Micklem Competition bridle: ® 1. Put the bridle on your horse as you normally would. Position the bridle to fit neatly round the protruding cheekbones. The nosepiece should sit a hands breath above the nostril to avoid the nose bones. (Figure 1.) 2. Adjust the bit straps to ensure the bit sits correctly in the mouth. (Figure 2.) 3. Fasten the upper back strap securely so that it is flush with the skin, there should be no daylight between the skin and the strap and should sit at a 45o angle. This holds the bridle in place. 4. The lower back strap fastens below the bit and should sit flush with the skin. 5. As an optional extra the bit clips supplied can be attached to the bit and then attached to the side ring. They offer unique tongue and bar protection.
