Banishing Bullying Project
Sisterhood is launching a NEW project that we
hope will involve the entire congregation. In conjunction
with Blanche Sosland and SuEllen Fried, nationally known
educators in the anti-bullying field, our Sisterhood will
be “stepping up” and getting involved in this ever-growing
problem that has such devastating effects.
Blanche and SuEllen co-authored the widely used
book BANISHING BULLYING BEHAVIOR: Transforming the Culture of Peer Abuse, which we will use as our
major resource.

Jewish Summer Camps-The Proof is in the Bug Juice
In the
next several
days many of
our children
will join an
estimated
70,000 other
Jewish students
(approximately
10% of the Jewish youth population)
at Jewish overnight camps across the
country. Over the years many believed
that attendance at Jewish summer
camps created long-lasting positive
effects on its alumni--but now we have
the data to prove it.
Last year the Foundation for
Jewish Camping released the results
of a survey conducted by sociologist
Steven M. Cohen--the most comprehensive to date-- on the positive impact
of Jewish summer camps. The study
compared Jewish camp alumni with
Jews of similar family, educational,
financial and denominational backgrounds and experiences who did not
attend camp.
Jewish camp alumni demonstrate higher levels of Jewish engagement in their adult years in a number
of categories. For instance: strong
emotional attachment to Israel (camp
alumni 55% higher than the rest), attendance at synagogue services at least
once a month (45% greater), regularly lighting Shabbat candles (37%
greater), more likely to contribute to
Jewish Federations (30%) more likely
to join a shul (26%) and less likely to
intermarry (10%).
For parents who are interested
in sending their children to camp
next summer, but struggle to find the
financial means to do so, please be
aware that scholarship funds are available. Beth Shalom and the Jewish
Community Foundation have funds
available to help make camp a reality
for your family.
For our students who will
soon be off to Ramah, Herzl, Sabra
and other Jewish camps this summer, please come to shul on Shabbat
morning, June 9th, to be honored
with a group Aliyah and your community’s blessing for a wonderful
summer.
We wish all of our campers a meaningful experience and ask
that you bring back a taste of Camp
Ruach to share with your shul.
Safe Travels,

This
was an
amazing
year!
With fabulous
learning, growing and
incredible activities,
the children could not wait to get to their classroom every
morning to see their teachers and friends and love another day
of school!
Some of our activities included concerts, puppet shows,
plays, Israeli Independence Day Parade, planting a garden,
bouncy houses and so much more!

What an incredible
year!
When we talk about the school year, there is a very
definite beginning and ending. While our students are in
class from September through May, we hope Jewish learning and experiences are a part of what they do every day.
This has been a year of significant learning and education.
Our dedicated teachers have worked hard to create a classroom environment that is exciting and interactive. Much

Editorial Comments
We celebrate Father’s Day
in June. This holiday
makes me think about my
father, Jake Levine, who
has been deceased for 17
years. I learned much from
Dad—about Judaism and
about life in general. Dad
was a “Shul Goer” and
served as a Gabbai of CBS
Bev’s Dad
Jacob H. Levine
for a number of years. He
taught me to be a “Shul Goer” and the meaning of
spending Shabbat morning in Shul. On Shabbat
morning I find a connection to
Dad when I come to services.
Have you been to Shabbat
services at CBS lately? Come
join us. You, too, may find a
connection to your past.
