A Pledge to Our Patients We are committed to improving the health of our community by modeling good nutrition and influencing how food is produced and distributed. Through our purchasing decisions, we can promote health by providing our patients, staff and visitors more fresh, great-tasting, nutritious food. By shortening the distance between the farm and the plate, we hope to lead by example and serve the freshest food available. Tips for Healthy Eating Health risks are associated with greater intake of foods that are high in sodium, solid fats, added sugars and refined grains. To encourage healthy eating, foods containing trans fat, those high in saturated fat, fried foods and the salt packet have been removed from our menu. When selecting your meals consider choosing more fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, if your diet allows. These foods are full of the nutrients your body needs to heal. Saint Joseph Mercy Health System is a signing member of the Healthy Food in Health Care pledge committing to the goal of providing local, nutritious and sustainable food to our patients, staff and visitors. We have also committed to the Michigan Health & Hospital Association’s goal of purchasing 20% of our hospital food locally by 2020. We are pleased to offer patients Boar’s Head brand reduced sodium hot dogs and chicken, all-natural hormone, nitrate and antibiotic free turkey, ham and roast beef. Boar’s Head meats and cheeses contain no fillers, gluten, artificial colors, flavors or trans fat. MyPlate.gov Choose a rainbow of fruit every day In 2010, we broke ground on The Farm at St. Joe’s, Michigan’s first hospital-based farm supplying farm-fresh greens and vegetables for patient and visitor meals. We also partner with local farmers to enhance our patient menu with fresh, seasonal food whenever possible. Eating local is healthier. Local produce contains more vitamins and minerals than supermarket produce that has been shipped from far distances. At The Farm at St. Joe’s all of our produce is grown without the use of pesticides and harvested by hand by volunteers.
