The Metric System

The Metric System
1. Also called SI (Standard
International) System.
2. SI is used by all scientists.
3. Helps them communicate
and share their work.
LENGTH
• Meter (m) is the BASIC unit
of length
• 1m = 100 cm
• 1m = 1000 mm
• May use a ruler or meterstick
VOLUME
• Amount of space an object
takes up.
• LITER (L) is the BASIC unit of
liquid volume. (liquids and
gases.)
• Use a graduated cylander
• The curve is called
a meniscus.
Volume Continued…
• Formula for solid volume is…
Length x Width X Height
*1mm = 1 cubic centimeter
MASS
• KILOGRAMS is the BASIC unit
of Mass.
• 1kg = 1000g
• Mass measures the amount of
the matter in an object
• Triple-Beam Balance is used to
measure mass.
DENSITY
• Measurement of how much
MASS is contained in an
object.
• Formula:
Density = Mass/Volume
(Density = Mass divided by
Volume).
Weight
• Measure of the force of
gravity acting on an object.
• Weight is measured in
Newtons.
• Gravity = 9.8 m/s2
TEMPERATURE
• Scientists measure according
to the CELSIUS scale.
• 0*C = Freezing (32*F)
• 100*C = Boiling
(212*F)
DIMENSIONAL
• Skill of converting 1 unit to
another. (Change kilograms to
grams)
• You can only convert units that
measure the same thing.
