Ever since people discovered
which plants were good to
eat and which were not there
has been plant identification.
Knowledge of plants and
identifying those important
for health and wellbeing has
been undertaken by many
cultures around the globe.
These cultures have evolved in
many different environments,
resulting in a wealth of different
ways to classify plants and give
them a name.
In relatively recent times Carl
Linnaeus a Swedish botanist,
physician, and zoologist, laid
the foundations for the modern
biological naming scheme of
binomial nomenclature.
se
He is known as the father of
modern taxonomy. The modern
naming of plants has been adopted
by the world’s leading taxonomic
botanists.
During this course you will be
exposed to the poetic language
of botanical Latin and enlightened
to the many layers of classification
from the greater plant orders to
specific plant species. You will
also learn how names are used
in the present horticultural world
and what are cultivars and diverse
world of common names.
