What’s Going on After Hours?
Ashley O., Staff Writer
The ASEP here at East Naples is what is going on after hours. In a recent interview with several
members of the Reading Club, hosted by Ms. Rios, it is easy to see why clubs in the ASEP are so
popular. Students in the ASEP Reading Club were interviewed and they explained that their reasons for joining the Reading Club with Ms. Rios was their love for reading. According to an 8 th
grader Samantha S., “I like to read a lot”. Nadia R.S. said she was trying to get out of Intensive
Language Arts, and Reading Club is fun. Ms. Rios reported that she loves reading and wants to
give students opportunities to read in an environment which supports and encourages reading.
It’s amazing that both children and adults have a reason or purpose to read. Samantha S. said
that in a story you can look through someone else’s life, (their point of view), and it helps her
escape reality. Later in the interview, students explained what books they were reading in the
club. The titles that were mentioned were: Slated by Teri Terry (Samantha S.); Hunger (book 2)
by: Michael Grant (Angel S.); Sweet Treats and Secret Crushes by: Lisa Greenwald (Nadia R.S.);
and Outlander by: Diana Gabaldon (Ms. Rios). Although Ms. Rios said she doesn’t like
“Outlander”, she is determined to finish what she started.
After School Reading Club has a lot of students from different grades. If you like to catch up on
your homework and read, then this is the program for you. In the first half of the club, you can do
homework. You then have the rest of the class to catch up on your reading. What book will you
read next?

Volleyball season ended with a serve! ENMS hosted a volleyball
tournament after school on October 14th. This was a game between ENMS students. Students were able to choose their teams
and the entry fee of one dollar to watch the event was donated to
charity. Volleyball players from this season hosted the event and
several were interviewed at the tournament. Kira F. said she
joined the volleyball team because she likes to play volleyball. Another 8th grader, Andrea M. said, “I like volleyball, it’s my favorite
sport. Many students were at this tournament. Sam C., a student
at ENMS, said that it looked fun and it is his favorite sport.
“The tournament brought a lot of students together.”
In preparation for this tournament, students were asked how they
practiced before this event. Kira F. said she practiced with her
friend, Lisa, after school and at the beach. Andrea M. said, “I practiced after school with friends”. The tournament brought a lot of
students together who enjoy the sport. Sam C. said he liked the
event because everyone gets together and plays.
What Makes You a Runner?
Joshua D. Business Manager/ Staff Writer
What makes you a good runner? Is it the fact that you can run a mile without stopping, or is it that
you’re the fittest person around? To some, these things don’t make up the qualities to become a runner.
“From enjoyment comes the will to win.” This is quoted from Arthur Lydiard, a runner from New Zealand, explains that in order to win you have to enjoy what you’re doing. To get better you must show
up to all the practices and show effort in your work, as well as enjoy it. To be able to do something
extremely well, you must love what you do and express it through that activity. Keeping this in mind
and thinking positive thoughts will help you succeed in your field of expertise. Some people believe
that the main point of a race is to win, but it’s not. Runners always want to test their limits, see how
fast they can go, they’re always looking for improvement in their running looking at what they’re doing
wrong. For the heart to be healthy, we must test our hearts and put them on a treadmill and let it run
as long as it can go.
“Let’s make a change in our lives and go for a run.”
Remember Eli B. and his friend Alex, the two ENMS Cross Country students? Their definitions for
running were “that it’s more than running — it’s running with spirit and in the beginning it’s independence and power but in the end it’s fun,”. Every runner puts their best effort in their run and run with
their heart, they do it for the team and for their supporters, to make them proud. Two additional ENMs
students, 8th grader Dylan M. and Logan J. a 7th grader, said “When I run the whole world stops, and I
can do whatever I want.” “Some people run to fill in their free time, weight loss and to relieve stress.”
and they said that when you run, you run with spirit. “Running is about staying fit and being active.”
We all have the potential to be runners, but some of us choose not to be. The great poet Maya Angelou once said, “Nothing will work unless you do.” Let’s make a change in our lives and go for a run.
Just do it!

Replacement Teacher
Katherine H., Copy Editor
I pulled my hoodie sleeve further down my right arm covering my father’s “mistake” from yesterday, as I approached the
place you call school and the place I call my own personal inferno. I walked through the empty hallways and sat down on a bench,
waiting for the time when the hallways filled up once again. In front was Mrs. Laurel’s class quietly reading out of their history books.
Which I would also like to refer to as my next class. When the bell rang to signal the change of classes, I slowly stood up and approached the classroom. Avoiding attention and being quiet as a mouse I entered the classroom, quickly taking a seat at the back
corner next to the window. One thing I did not notice when I entered was the new blond teacher facing the board and while writing
down today’s homework she wrote her name right beside it.
‘Mrs. Shamrock’, it read in a green Expo marker. I stared curiously at this stranger as she turned around, her bright green
eyes catching my attention. Is this our substitute? Answering my question she quickly announced, “Hello class, my name is Mrs.
Shamrock and I am your replacement teacher for the rest of the year.”
Most of the class groaned in disappointment, and some just looked sad. I, on the other hand was smiling. I don’t really
know why. The teacher for this class had changed multiple times, but I just got a good aura from her. The class went by like the
wind. She was awfully kind and memorized our names the second after she said them. A smile a little more alive than my usual
mask appeared on my face — a nice teacher before I disappear from this life, I thought. That thought made me lose my smile somehow, but I insisted to carry on my plan, next year for high school I’ll be gone. I slowly approached my locker and took out the necessary items. Heavy footsteps approached me and I shrunk back in fear, knowing exactly who it was. “Hey Reggie, where is my daily
pay?” said Howard, the school jerk. I slowly shook my head signaling I didn’t have it. I was scared to look up, but I slowly did. His
face showed disappointment and a mocking grin played on his face. He looked around the hallways and then back at me.
“You are lucky there are too many witnesses,” he said, while slamming my locker closed, leaving all the necessary items
inside. Then, with a sudden jerk he knocked down all my books and walked away down the hall with a smile. I fell to the ground and
shoved all of the papers in my binder. As he walked away and I leaned down I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A light
green eye looking our way that was now nowhere in sight now. It came from Mrs. Shamrock’s class. It’s probably my imagination…

A Thankful Heart or a Thankful Stomach?
Aly P., Entertainment Editor
It was expected that the majority of students would pick food when asked their favorite component of Thanksgiving. But
after surveying several students on what part of Thanksgiving was their favorite,
most chose family.
Students chose their favorite Thanksgiving tradition out of: Food, Black
Friday Sales, or Family. Maria C., an 8th grader, told me that her family’s food is
incredible, but she loves them more than their food. Another student, Saoirse B.,
also an 8th grader, said “Thanksgiving isn’t about what you buy or the foods you eat
that day, but what you have had from the beginning.” On the contrary, another 8th
grader, Sam S. said “I like food.” He continued to tell me that he hoped the food
option would come out on top of this survey. A 6th grader, Vivian C. said that her
favorite part of Thanksgiving is the food because you get to make it with your family,
so it’s like a combination of both food and family. Another 6th grader, Alina Z. said,
“Family is definitely my favorite. I don’t get to see them a lot because they live
across the world.” 7th graders Brittany N. and Damian C. both chose Black Friday
because they like the great deals it has to offer.
As mentioned before, the category with the winning percentage of this poll
was Family. 46% of students said that family was their favorite part of Thanksgiving,
36% of students said food, and 18% said Black Friday shopping was their number.
You can’t hide your
gator pride!
Watch Me
Sam S., Opinion Editor
Hit the quan gators! Young teens here at ENMS love to listen to catchy, and rhythmic music. Everyone knows
that the gators attending East Naples Middle School recite or dance to popular music. This past year has been
an explosion of songs that people admired and were passionate about. Most of the songs that have been booming, fall in the pop, rap, hip hop, or dance category. Along with listening to hot tunes, people also like to dance to
them. One of the most popular dance moves is the “whip.” Social media has shown how well-known these
dance moves are. Garnel G. states, “I like to listen to hip hop because it makes me feel some type of way.” He
adds, “I can also hit that whip.” It seems that music like hip hop can show the spirit of someone. Some students
say that the school environment feels lively with the modern music.
“Any music that gets them energized, is the music they like” -ENMS Student
Astrid N., an 8th grader here at ENMS, explains that she likes rock, and the band Sleeping With Sirens. A lot of
students say that any music that gets them energized, is the music they like. There are many different music
genres in the music world. Almost everyone has a particular taste in music. Music is greatly appreciated, and
will continue to amuse people. Enjoying it will influence daily life, and will have a positive effect. So the next time
you hear a nice beat, HIT THE WHIP and feel the beat!
Giving Thanks From the Bottom of Your Heart
Paola Q., Staff Writer
Do you smell the turkey cooking in the oven? Do you hear your siblings running around saying, “ I cannot wait to eat!” ? Thanksgiving is fast approaching and in a recent interview with
students at ENMS their thoughts and thanks were shared about Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving
is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. This year ENMS students have a
week off to spend with their families.
Do you smell the turkey cooking in the oven?
Thanksgiving for most is when families have a table full of different kinds of food like turkey, ham, etc. ENMS 8th grade gator, Geety Baqeri, said, “I like Thanksgiving because the food
is awesome and Black Friday is the next day. So, after eating I go to Black Friday.” Astrid N.,
another 8th grade student said that she also loves Thanksgiving because she gets to hang out
with family and Black Friday is the next day. These two 8 th grade students both like celebrating
Thanksgiving. How will you spend your Thanksgiving?

Making Pancakes in Mrs.
Diemert’s Class
Meet Mrs. Stone
Kylie L., Staff Writer
Mrs. Stone is a 7th grade science teacher here at East Naples Middle School.
She has been teaching science for 19 years, and has always wanted to teach.
At first, she did not specifically want to teach science, so Mrs. Stone taught PE
for a few years. If she hadn’t become a science teacher, Mrs. Stone says she
would possibly be a scientist. When asked what her favorite
thing about teaching science is, Mrs. Stone said “I get to do
fun hands-on experiments.” Her favorite thing to teach is anything involving animals. Ever since she was a kid, Mrs. Stone
has loved science.
Behind the Scenes with Mr. Fryer
Garnel G., Staff and Sports Writer
A very amusing and practical person is exactly who Mr. Fryer is! Mr. Fryer has been teaching
Civics for 5 years here at ENMS. Teaching is something Mr. Fryer always wanted to do. He
cares about his students and tries to help them succeed. Even though many students didn’t
have him as a teacher, plenty have heard a great deal of positive things about him as a
teacher and a person. Mr. Fryer received his degree from the University of Michigan and
Western Michigan University. He was born in Michigan and lived there for 18 years. Mr. Fryer
is all about helping his kids succeed, “I always wanted to help out kids and I feel as though
education is the basis for your future.” Some of his former students even stated that being in
Mr. Fryer’s class was a great experience and a great learning environment. According to Mr.
Fryer, his students’ success is a huge thing to him. “It is extremely important. If they don’t
succeed, I don’t succeed.” Being a teacher is a very important role to him and he wants to do
his best to help guide students through their education.
The Big Screen or a Flat Screen?
Geety B., Staff Writer
Furious 7 or Scream Queens? Would you rather watch a thrill-full
movie or an action-filled TV show? Many students at East Naples
Middle would rather watch a TV show. Paola Q., an 8th grader says
that TV Shows are a lot more interesting and they don’t end as fast as
a movie. “So far my favorite TV show is Scream Queens.”, Paola
said. Scream Queens is an American horror comedy that broadcasts
every Tuesday at 8:00pm on FOX. Another student in 8th grade, Garnel G. says he enjoys watching movies instead. He also added that,
“Movies tend to draw more attention from their audience and people
pay so much money just to go watch the movie.” his favorite movie is
Furious 7, is a movie that came out on April 3rd, 2015. Many students
agree with Paola, like Vivian C., a 6th grade student, who told me that
she prefers TV shows because there are many more seasons and
you can binge watch it. She also said that there are also a lot more
spin-offs. Some students who have preferred to stay anonymous
have disagreed. One student agreed with Garnel, and mentioned that
people pay so much money just to go watch the movie and they get
so hyped about; this is why some prefer movies.
According to the data collected, a total of 43 students at ENMS
preferred to watch TV shows instead of movies. An 8th grader, Astrid
N. also prefers to watch TV shows. She said, “My favorite shows are
Doctor Who, The Walking Dead and Supernatural. Astrid said that
she likes The Walking Dead because she enjoys a lot of drama and
she is always wondering what happens next and she feels she is part
of the show. So one question remains: which do you prefer, movies or
TV shows?
The snap of a neck. The feeling, no, sensation my mind has yet to ever forget. Oh, how just the mere sound brings a tingle to
my cold and disproportioned spine. I shudder and…I feel. No one fathoms this. In all of my time living, all whom I know have
infested me with their negligent and inimical ways. I’ve only been returning the favor, yes?
The gentle snap of a bone and the sudden lifelessness in a one breathing persons’ eyes is the only feeling I’ve come to endure.
Grasping their necks, I watch their struggle and dilated pupils, and with just one quick jagged motion their bone snaps and I
exhale with my new found relief.
Question me you might, but oh, trust me I’ve endeavored some alternative manner or method to achieve emotion and warmth. I
have…pierced needles through the globular organs in which people earn perception. I have sawed through seemingly endless
quantum’s of a variety of limbs and bones, and I only felt empty.
At last, the snap of a neck, I found only to be satisfying. At first, I regarded the heaps of dismembered bodies with limbs going
all directions they weren’t supposed to as terrifying, I was petrified by myself, even. But now, I look upon the gruesome mess
of broken necks, paled bodies, and the differing expressions of my many victims and I only smile.
Never in my existence have I not felt empty. So, why would I allow myself to succumb to emptiness once more? This is why I
mustn’t impede such crimes. Every night, I emerge and see my way to a new finding of prey. A sacrifice for my joy. Tonight
will be no different. Tonight I will be having a visit with you.
