Marvellous Mixtures - Dove Bank Primary School

Literacy & Language
Reading, discussing and completing Diary Writing through use of
‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by the famous author Roald Dahl.
Information Texts: To independently research the content and
write an information text about a significant scientist from the
area of science that we are studying for this topic, or about a
scientist who has developed a process or product that applies the
science we are studying

Reports: Write a report on a scientific enquiry linked to the topic,
involving either the changing states of materials, separation of
mixtures or Reversible and Irreversible changes.
Poetry: To write a rhyming couplet poem based on George’s
recipe for his medicine. To perform a class poem in front of an
audience and write and perform an individual or group poem.
Science Y4: States of Matter
Compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases
Observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research
the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)
Identify the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle and associate the rate of
evaporation with temperature.

Y5: Properties and Changes of Materials
Know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a
substance from a solution
Use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through
filtering, sieving and evaporating
Explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this kind of change is not
usually reversible, including changes associated with burning and the action of acid on bicarbonate of
soda
Y5: Animals including Humans
This is delivered through PHSE/SRE Cycle A in this topic time. Describe the changes as humans develop
to old age.
Demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes
