PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Joanne Hewitt, RHIT
Hello Members,
The wheels were set in motion for the 2016-2017 year at the July strategic planning meeting. At that
meeting we
•
Reviewed the Rules and Regulations, noting 2 recent changes;
•
Reviewed the Six Sigma Lean exercise results (from January 2016) identifying suggestions to
implement this year, and
•
Brainstormed educational session topics and confirmed speakers.
Please take note that Tuesday’s meetings are in different locations this year. Carefully read the
Calendar of Events in the newsletter and the e-mail blast event flyer for the location of each meeting.
Also, spread the word! The September 13, 2016 meeting will be held at San Diego Mesa College.
Please make every effort to attend September’s meeting as we are honored to welcome Deborah Collier,
CHIA President. You will also get to hear from the dynamic panel of CHIA Past Presidents (Cassi
Birnbaum, Heidi Shaffer and Tracy Elmer) as they share about their experiences in the esteemed
president’s role.
I’d like to introduce your Board and Committee members who are ready to serve and assist you. Board
meetings convene immediately after the Tuesday night educational sessions. Board meetings are open to
all SDHIA members. Each Board agenda will be included in the introduction (Power Point) slides presented
at the start of each meeting. Your Board and Committee members look forward to the chance to meet
you this year, if we haven’t had the pleasure already!

Coordinator. She has a total of 21 years at Sharp. Joanne likes the legal aspects of release of information
and protection of patient confidentiality. She has served SDHIA as hostess, newsletter editor, secretary (2

recipe for learning new things, challenging one’s self to grow professionally, and creating lasting
professional and personal relationships.”
President-Elect – Svetlana Woersching, RHIT, CCS, CPC
Svetlana is a Medical Coder for Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. She graduated from Santa Barbara
City College in 2014, and is currently pursuing a B.S. in Health Information Management through the

Treasurer – Pati Conover, RHIT
Pati is a Systems Analyst at Rady Children’s Hospital. Pati’s niche in HIM is information technology. Pati says “I was drawn to IT
because I have a passion for education and there is always something new to learn in the area of technology. Pati shared that she
likes volunteering for SDHIA because she is “an introvert by nature and volunteering has really helped me to step outside of my
comfort zone, network and meet a lot of amazing people”.
Secretary – Daniel Castanon, RHIA
Daniel currently works at Nuance Communications, Inc. where he has been employed for 15 years as a Senior Product Support
Engineer. Daniel shared “I am passionate about technology. I feel that incorporating computers into the Health Information domain
has changed our profession, from hospital-wide enterprise EHR’s to private physician-patient portals. I really enjoy learning and
supporting various computer programs, interfaces, and reporting, along with all the standardization and regulations that come with
it. Last year Joanne approached me about volunteering for SDHIA, and I agreed. This year as your San Diego Health Information
Association Secretary, I would like to help by going green and doing as much as we can on-line as well as saving our trees and
natural resources for the next generation. I hope to get to meet you at one of our monthly meetings.”
CHIA Board Liaison to SDHIA – Maria Hewett, MBA, RHIA
Maria is currently working as a Health Information Management Consultant. She tells us “My passion since childhood has been
leadership and life-long learning. Since my first job I’ve worked in various health care settings utilizing skills learned in college and
from various mentors and job assignments such as Blue Cross of Northeast Ohio as Data Analyst; Quality Assurance Director of a
Medicare/Medicaid Grant implementation program; DRG Validator; consultant to SNFs, ICFs, FQHCs, HMOs, Chemical Dependency
organizations; Acting Director of H.I.S. at a very large hospital; Chief of Medical Records in a Correctional setting; Assistant
Administrator of Distinct Part SNF; H.I.E. MPI Coordinator. Throughout my professional career, I always wanted to break in areas
‘less travelled by H.I.M. Professionals’, sort of a trailblazer. As I think about which job(s) I liked best, I can say I liked them all: loved
my bosses, co-workers, support staff and most of all the people we served, the patient, and the consumer.”
Hostess – Judith Wodyn, B.A.
Judy is our second year hostess. She has a Bachelors in Business Administration and is a student at Mesa College’s Health
Information Technology Program. Judy will graduate in Spring 2017 with an Associate Degree in HIT. She is interested in CPT and
ICD coding, medical records for Senior Care, and is open to many available positions in HIT. Judy says “I love volunteering at SDHIA
because I enjoy meeting the great people in the HIT field, learning what is new through the educational classes and networking with
employees and employers in my new field. It is a wonderful organization to get involved in”.
Newsletter Committee Representatives – Leslie Barden, MBA, RHIA and Oksana Lytvynenko, B.S.
Leslie returned to school nine years ago and earned an MBA in Healthcare Policy and Administration and a Graduate Certificate in
Health Information Management. She received RHIA certification in November of 2012 and is now studying to sit for CCS
certification in the fall of 2016. She has worked as an independent consultant in healthcare data analysis and medical record review
for 2 years and recently accepted a position with Telecare Corporation as a Medical Record Technician / Data Specialist. Leslie
shared “Medical Records Administration was a “change career” for me, so I feel that it’s important to collaborate with professionals,
become informed about important issues and trends and continually strive to learn new skills and contribute my talents to the HIM
industry. This is one reason why I volunteer and serve CHIA/SDHIA. I have contributed as a chair-person on the SDHIA newsletter
committee for 3 years and I served as the SDHIA Treasurer during the 2014/2015 fiscal year. I volunteer with SDHIA at every
opportunity because, I believe that the only way to achieve my goals is to “take action”! I am honored to again serve as your
2016/2017 co-chair of the SDHIA newsletter committee and Coding and Data Quality Co-coordinator.”
Oksana works as a Quality Analyst Assistant at US San Diego Health, Department of Organ Procurement for transplantation and
research. She is working toward her RHIT credential. Oksana submitted “We serve all hospitals in San Diego and Imperial county
and part of my Quality Assurance of donor’s record work involves EMR information coming to us from over 50 hospitals, including
Sharp, Scripps, Palomar/Pomerado, Rady Children’s, and more. It excites me to see how information technology has been
transforming our way of doing things and processing information, and I’m closely watching the healthcare transformation by
embracing technology use for Information Governance and real-time Information Exchange. I wanted to be connected with
healthcare industry leaders to know the local news and industry developments, and look for a job opportunity. That’s why I decided
to volunteer for my local chapter, SDHIA.”

Coding and Data Quality Coordinator Representatives – Leslie Barden, MBA, RHIA and Keith Hass, B.S., RHIA
Keith works as a contractor for Kaiser Permanente. His job is to investigate, analyze and perform financial remediation for
resolutions to complex problems for individuals who have on exchange healthcare accounts. Keith says “My main area of interest
in HIM is the domain of privacy and security. The goal I am reaching for is to obtain the credential of Certified in Healthcare
Privacy and Security (CHPS). This would allow me to be involved in enforcing policy within this domain and educating the
healthcare workforce on the importance of privacy and security in the healthcare setting. I volunteer my time with SDHIA
because it gives me a sense of community with professionals of similar interest. HIM professionals are interested in developing
the HIM field for the broader roles of HIM from the medical records office to leadership in the HIM profession of the 21st
Century.”
Rules and Regulations Committee Representatives – Heidi Shaffer, RHIA and Suzanne Forrest, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CHC
Heidi has been a dedicated Health Information professional leader at the local, state and national associations. Heidi says “I
believe in giving back to the profession and enjoy working with all my colleagues. The 30 years in the profession has given me the
opportunity to make many friends that I would not have if I hadn’t volunteered.” She has served as SDHIA and CHIA President and
on the Board of AHIMA Foundation. She has been on various Committees for SDHIA, CHIA and AHIMA during her career. She also
has been a delegate for SDHIA and CHIA as well. She worked for the County of San Diego Behavioral Health Services for over 25

Stephens College and her credentials include RHIA, CCS, CCS-P. Suzanne is also certified in healthcare compliance and is an

position I have not previously held and is an opportunity to make a difference”.
CHIA Nominating Committee for SDHIA - Kim Jackson, B.S., RHIT, CHP, CHPC
Kim is employed at Palomar Health as the District Director, Health Information Services/Privacy Officer. Kim says “I enjoy the

volunteered as a “Mentor” in her profession and enjoys educating others. She continues to assist her local SDHIA Board serving as
a volunteer and resource, and contributing to the betterment of the CLA professional organization.
Khanh is currently working as a Clinical Data Analyst in the Corporate Compliance Department of Sharp HealthCare. Khanh states
“I chose the HIM career path because I like to work in healthcare, but providing direct patient care is not my strong suit. HIM has
embraced me since the start, and I feel like I should give back to the HIM community. I have volunteered in a couple of areas
within SDHIA, and I always enjoy doing it for a simple reason: helping out while meeting and learning from many wonderful
professionals in the field.
The mission of the California Health Information Association is to advance the management of
health information through networking, education, shared knowledge, and advocacy.

On August 15, 2016 we learned with great
sadness that Michele lost her battle with
pancreatic cancer. Michele was diagnosed
this year, and she continued to live every
day with a positive, uplifting attitude.
Many of us had the great pleasure to work
with Michele. After meeting Michele, it only
took ½ a minute to realize that she was
super energetic (come to find out about
everything she did!) and loved being a HIM
professional!
Michele Curley
Michele’s Administrator at Edgemoor
shared the following with Edgemoor staff.
“Michele was an active, vibrant member of
the Edgemoor family for nearly 10
years. Her smile and laugh were infectious
and she was a great role model and team
leader for Living Well. She will be missed by
everyone who knew her.”
