At that meeting we • Reviewed the Rules and Regulations, noting 2 recent changes; • Reviewed the Six Sigma Lean exercise results (from January 2016) identifying suggestions to implement this year, and • Brainstormed educational session topics and confirmed speakers. Please take note that Tuesday’s meetings are in different locations this year. Carefully read the Calendar of Events in the newsletter and the e-mail blast event flyer for the location of each meeting. Also, spread the word! The September 13, 2016 meeting will be held at San Diego Mesa College. Please make every effort to attend September’s meeting as we are honored to welcome Deborah Collier, CHIA President. You will also get to hear from the dynamic panel of CHIA Past Presidents (Cassi Birnbaum, Heidi Shaffer and Tracy Elmer) as they share about their experiences in the esteemed president’s role. I’d like to introduce your Board and Committee members who are ready to serve and assist you. Board meetings convene immediately after the Tuesday night educational sessions. Board meetings are open to all SDHIA members. Each Board agenda will be included in the introduction (Power Point) slides presented at the start of each meeting. Past President and SDHIA Nominating Committee Representative – Dorothy O’Hagan, MNLM, RHIT, CCS Since 2012, Dorothy has served as the Director of Health Information and Interoperability at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego (RCHSD) and carries with her more than 30 years of experience leading and managing successful health care projects and teams. Dorothy is accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), and Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), and by Nonprofit Leadership Alliance as a Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP). As an Adjunct Faculty member of San Diego Mesa College and an Instructor for UCSD Extension, Dorothy serves as a mentor and teacher to the next generation of Health Information professionals. Dorothy has served on the Board for the San Diego Health Information Association as Secretary, President-Elect, President, and now Past President. She has a total of 21 years at Sharp. Joanne likes the legal aspects of release of information and protection of patient confidentiality. She has served SDHIA as hostess, newsletter editor, secretary (2 terms), served on (several) committees, and as President-Elect. “Volunteering for SDHIA and CHIA is the recipe for learning new things, challenging one’s self to grow professionally, and creating lasting professional and personal relationships.” President-Elect – Svetlana Woersching, RHIT, CCS, CPC Svetlana is a Medical Coder for Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. She graduated from Santa Barbara City College in 2014, and is currently pursuing a B.S. in Health Information Management through the University of Cincinnati. Svetlana shared this: “I enjoy volunteering and am honored to serve for SDHIA”. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Dr. Seuss 1|Page Treasurer – Pati Conover, RHIT Pati is a Systems Analyst at Rady Children’s Hospital. Pati’s niche in HIM is information technology. Pati says “I was drawn to IT because I have a passion for education and there is always something new to learn in the area of technology. Pati shared that she likes volunteering for SDHIA because she is “an introvert by nature and volunteering has really helped me to step outside of my comfort zone, network and meet a lot of amazing people”. Secretary – Daniel Castanon, RHIA Daniel currently works at Nuance Communications, Inc. where he has been employed for 15 years as a Senior Product Support Engineer. Daniel shared “I am passionate about technology. I feel that incorporating computers into the Health Information domain has changed our profession, from hospital-wide enterprise EHR’s to private physician-patient portals. I really enjoy learning and supporting various computer programs, interfaces, and reporting, along with all the standardization and regulations that come with it. Last year Joanne approached me about volunteering for SDHIA, and I agreed. This year as your San Diego Health Information Association Secretary, I would like to help by going green and doing as much as we can on-line as well as saving our trees and natural resources for the next generation. I hope to get to meet you at one of our monthly meetings.” CHIA Board Liaison to SDHIA – Maria Hewett, MBA, RHIA Maria is currently working as a Health Information Management Consultant. She tells us “My passion since childhood has been leadership and life-long learning. Since my first job I’ve worked in various health care settings utilizing skills learned in college and from various mentors and job assignments such as Blue Cross of Northeast Ohio as Data Analyst; Quality Assurance Director of a Medicare/Medicaid Grant implementation program; DRG Validator; consultant to SNFs, ICFs, FQHCs, HMOs, Chemical Dependency organizations; Acting Director of H.I.S. at a very large hospital; Chief of Medical Records in a Correctional setting; Assistant Administrator of Distinct Part SNF; H.I.E. MPI Coordinator. Throughout my professional career, I always wanted to break in areas ‘less travelled by H.I.M. Professionals’, sort of a trailblazer. As I think about which job(s) I liked best, I can say I liked them all: loved my bosses, co-workers, support staff and most of all the people we served, the patient, and the consumer.” Hostess – Judith Wodyn, B.A. Judy is our second year hostess. She has a Bachelors in Business Administration and is a student at Mesa College’s Health Information Technology Program. Judy will graduate in Spring 2017 with an Associate Degree in HIT. She is interested in CPT and ICD coding, medical records for Senior Care, and is open to many available positions in HIT. Judy says “I love volunteering at SDHIA because I enjoy meeting the great people in the HIT field, learning what is new through the educational classes and networking with employees and employers in my new field. It is a wonderful organization to get involved in”. Newsletter Committee Representatives – Leslie Barden, MBA, RHIA and Oksana Lytvynenko, B.S. Leslie returned to school nine years ago and earned an MBA in Healthcare Policy and Administration and a Graduate Certificate in Health Information Management. She received RHIA certification in November of 2012 and is now studying to sit for CCS certification in the fall of 2016. She has worked as an independent consultant in healthcare data analysis and medical record review for 2 years and recently accepted a position with Telecare Corporation as a Medical Record Technician / Data Specialist. Leslie shared “Medical Records Administration was a “change career” for me, so I feel that it’s important to collaborate with professionals, become informed about important issues and trends and continually strive to learn new skills and contribute my talents to the HIM industry. This is one reason why I volunteer and serve CHIA/SDHIA. I have contributed as a chair-person on the SDHIA newsletter committee for 3 years and I served as the SDHIA Treasurer during the 2014/2015 fiscal year. I volunteer with SDHIA at every opportunity because, I believe that the only way to achieve my goals is to “take action”! I am honored to again serve as your 2016/2017 co-chair of the SDHIA newsletter committee and Coding and Data Quality Co-coordinator.” Oksana works as a Quality Analyst Assistant at US San Diego Health, Department of Organ Procurement for transplantation and research. She is working toward her RHIT credential. Oksana submitted “We serve all hospitals in San Diego and Imperial county and part of my Quality Assurance of donor’s record work involves EMR information coming to us from over 50 hospitals, including Sharp, Scripps, Palomar/Pomerado, Rady Children’s, and more. It excites me to see how information technology has been transforming our way of doing things and processing information, and I’m closely watching the healthcare transformation by embracing technology use for Information Governance and real-time Information Exchange. I wanted to be connected with healthcare industry leaders to know the local news and industry developments, and look for a job opportunity. That’s why I decided to volunteer for my local chapter, SDHIA.” 2|Page Coding and Data Quality Coordinator Representatives – Leslie Barden, MBA, RHIA and Keith Hass, B.S., RHIA Keith works as a contractor for Kaiser Permanente. His job is to investigate, analyze and perform financial remediation for resolutions to complex problems for individuals who have on exchange healthcare accounts. Keith says “My main area of interest in HIM is the domain of privacy and security. The goal I am reaching for is to obtain the credential of Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS). This would allow me to be involved in enforcing policy within this domain and educating the healthcare workforce on the importance of privacy and security in the healthcare setting. I volunteer my time with SDHIA because it gives me a sense of community with professionals of similar interest. HIM professionals are interested in developing the HIM field for the broader roles of HIM from the medical records office to leadership in the HIM profession of the 21st Century.” Rules and Regulations Committee Representatives – Heidi Shaffer, RHIA and Suzanne Forrest, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CHC Heidi has been a dedicated Health Information professional leader at the local, state and national associations. Heidi says “I believe in giving back to the profession and enjoy working with all my colleagues. The 30 years in the profession has given me the opportunity to make many friends that I would not have if I hadn’t volunteered.” She has served as SDHIA and CHIA President and on the Board of AHIMA Foundation. She has been on various Committees for SDHIA, CHIA and AHIMA during her career. She also has been a delegate for SDHIA and CHIA as well. She worked for the County of San Diego Behavioral Health Services for over 25 years. Suzanne is currently the coding manager for Sharp Memorial and Sharp Coronado. Prior to joining Sharp HealthCare this past November, she held the position as Compliance Manager at UCSD for 17 years. Suzanne earned her Master’s Degree from Stephens College and her credentials include RHIA, CCS, CCS-P. Suzanne is also certified in healthcare compliance and is an AHIMA approved ICD-10 and PCS trainer. Additionally, Suzanne is an adjunct professor for the Health Information Technology Program as Mesa College. She has served as President for SDHIA and is a past Director for CHIA. Suzanne’s interest and passion is coding and teaching. Suzanne said, “I choose to serve SDHIA by being on the rules and regulations committee because it is a position I have not previously held and is an opportunity to make a difference”. CHIA Nominating Committee for SDHIA - Kim Jackson, B.S., RHIT, CHP, CHPC Kim is employed at Palomar Health as the District Director, Health Information Services/Privacy Officer. Kim says “I enjoy the opportunity to support and promote the candidacy of our talented San Diego HIM professionals for leadership positions within the California Health Information Association”. Finance Committee Representatives – Pati Conover, RHIT, Marci Arkin, B.S., RHIA, Khanh Shafer, RHIT, Joanne Hewitt, RHIT Marci is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of both Sharp Mesa Vista & Sharp McDonald Center’s Behavioral Health hospitals, inpatient and outpatient programs. Over the past 35 years, Marci has been a leader in the health information management profession, specializing in the legal aspects and services of Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse/Dependency medical records, regulatory compliance for documentation requirements and HIPAA Privacy issues. Throughout her career, she has been an active member in her local professional associations since becoming an R.H.I.A. in 1981, and has served several times as a Delegate, volunteered on the Bylaws Committee, Public Relations Committee, Historian and Finance Committee. She has served as the S.D.H.I.A. President from Years 2003-2006. She served on the C.H.I.A. Nominating Committee from 2005-2006. She has been a Clinical Site Supervisor for Mesa College students and over the years, she has continued to entertain the students in the HEIT Programs as a Guest Speaker on Behavioral Health and Mentoring. She has volunteered as a “Mentor” in her profession and enjoys educating others. She continues to assist her local SDHIA Board serving as a volunteer and resource, and contributing to the betterment of the CLA professional organization. Khanh is currently working as a Clinical Data Analyst in the Corporate Compliance Department of Sharp HealthCare. Khanh states “I chose the HIM career path because I like to work in healthcare, but providing direct patient care is not my strong suit. HIM has embraced me since the start, and I feel like I should give back to the HIM community. I have volunteered in a couple of areas within SDHIA, and I always enjoy doing it for a simple reason: helping out while meeting and learning from many wonderful professionals in the field.
