• Primary goal: correct the political and
economic injustices that resulted from
industrialization.

• Theodore Roosevelt:
– The Square Deal: consumer protection,
conservation
– “Trust-Buster” – attacked only “bad” trusts

• William H. Taft: T.R.’s VP, also a “trust-buster”
• Woodrow Wilson: “New Freedom” reforms
– Graduated income tax (16th Amendment)
– Clayton Antitrust Act (outlawed trusts)
– Federal Reserve Act (regulation of $$$ supply)

• Each student will receive a reading on either

• Read and summarize your article in your

• Find a partner with the article you did not get.
• Partners teach each other about their
