Reform Tenement House Law Description Requires fire escapes, windows in each room Meat Inspection Enforces sanitary conditions in meatpacking Act plants 19th Amendment Gave women the right to vote The Progressive Era: 1900-1920 • Primary goal: correct the political and economic injustices that resulted from industrialization. The Progressive Presidents • Theodore Roosevelt: – The Square Deal: consumer protection, conservation – “Trust-Buster” – attacked only “bad” trusts T.R. waving at the haters The Progressive Presidents • William H. Taft: T.R.’s VP, also a “trust-buster” • Woodrow Wilson: “New Freedom” reforms – Graduated income tax (16th Amendment) – Clayton Antitrust Act (outlawed trusts) – Federal Reserve Act (regulation of $$$ supply) Task • Each student will receive a reading on either Theodore Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson. • Read and summarize your article in your notes. • Find a partner with the article you did not get. • Partners teach each other about their Progressive President and complete their notes.
