Fall 2010

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
evaluate expressions that contain addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers,
fractions,
decimals, signed numbers, and variables.
simplify expressions that contain variables.
evaluate expressions using order of operation laws.
solve equations.
simplify and evaluate exponential and square root expressions.
demonstrate problem-solving techniques of applications using ratio and proportions.
solve elementary word problems using algebraic techniques.
calculate area, perimeter, and volume of geometric figures.
Prerequisites:
Math 25 (computational arithmetic) with a grade of “C” or better, prerequisite verification slip
through counseling, or proof of math self assessment, (search on ARC Homepage or go to:
http://www.arc.losrios.edu/Support_Services/Assessment/Math_Self-Assessment.htm)
Strong foundation is crucial for this class!
Materials Required:
Computer + internet access (mymathlab via coursecompass.com). A 3-ring binder with at least
a 1” binding or a notebook/folder, scientific calculator, writing equipments, access to a prealgebra
book, and the desire to learn math.
Materials
Recommended:
Prealgebra 4th edition, Jamie Blair, John Tobey, and Jeffrey Slater with mymathlab kit.
(ISBN: 0558401031), graph paper, ruler, color pencils, and a big eraser.
Calculators:
None allowed until chapter 8. Scientific calculators only from chapter 8 and on.
Grading:
Points from each of the following categories will be added up, with a total of 1000 points:
A (900-1000)
B (800-899) C (700-799)
D (600-699)
F (0-599)
*Keep track of your progress! I won’t compute your grade until after the final, so if you want to compute your grade at
any point during the semester, use the attached grade sheet, add up the points earned and divide it by the possible points
up to that point (usually included in the announcement after each test). Use pencil so you can erase!
I. Homework (130 points). (mymathlab Trouble Shooting Center: 1-800-677-6337).
Must have internet to use mymathlab! Purchase access and or register at coursecompass.com. The
Course ID is: chung62694. Each student has different versions of the same types of problems. Hw is
crucial for doing well on quizzes and tests. Practice makes perfect! Hw is assigned for each section.
We cover a lot everyday! Do homework everyday! You might want to click “save” and print out the
whole assignment, work on them, double check, and then enter the answers when you log on. You can
1
also click on “similar exercises” to get a second chance on some of the problems or just for more
practice.) This program can provide lots of help right away! The “due date” is a reminder for test the next day.
The real due date is the day before final. We will also have 15 in class worksheets/notes, and they are to be
turned in the following class (unless instructed otherwise) for full credit (2 points each).
II. Note Book: (10 points)
Due the moment before final. No make ups. Neatly include all your notes, tests, quizzes, etc, for this class.
III. Quizzes (150 points; 10 points per quiz):
Don’t miss class! Be prepared! Each quiz will usually consist 2 problems and cover materials presented
previously in class and problems from hw assignments. No make ups, but the best 15 scores will be counted
toward your grade.
III. Chapter Tests (510 points; Test 1 = 30 points, Test 6 = 80 points, rest is in class = 100 points per test):
6 tests will be given, and dates will be confirmed one week before the test. No make ups and no exceptions, but
(except the take home tests: T1 and T6) the highest score will count twice, replacing the lowest. This is intended
to take care of all emergencies, sudden time conflicts, and etc.
IV. Final (200 points):
Wednesday (12/15/10), 8-10AM. No make ups or retakes or time extensions. The Final Exam will be
comprehensive, and doing the cumulative reviews after each chapter in the text will be helpful in studying for the
final. There will be a handout toward the end, confirming all the details.
V. Extra credit:
Each problem done correctly on the board counts as 1 point. Every hour of attendance of Beacon Workshop (must sign
up at the beginning of semester) counts as 1 point. Each hour of tutoring through other campus services (LRC, EOPS, or
DSPS, etc) counts as 0.5 point. Bring verification for hours of attendance on the last day of class, or they won’t count!
10 points for getting 90% or above on hw by the end of semester. 10 extra worksheets, 2 points each. Each math joke is
worth 1 point, and max of 3 per student. The total of extra credit points (other than the ones on the tests or quizzes) is
caped at 25.
*Every student is allotted the same amount of time for tests, unless I am required by law to allow certain students more
time, and it is the responsibility of these students to inform me prior to the first quiz with the necessary documentation, for
the accommodation won’t be made afterwards. Never be late to any tests and definitely not the final, for the instructor has
the right to disqualify them.
Other policies:
Each student is expected to:
1. Follow all rules and procedures of American River College; especially in regards to dropping and adding classes
and receiving a Pass/Fail grade. (if you wished to drop the class but didn’t drop yourself by the deadline, I will be
forced to give you a grade for the class)
2. Participate in class and group discussions. Work with other students on problems in class as well as on hw, but do
and turn in your own work, always.
3. Attend and be punctual for every class meeting, and remain in class for the entire class time. Regardless of
reasons, upon the 4th absence, you may be dropped.
4. Behave in a manner appropriate for a college classroom (turn off all electronics in class, take irrelevant
conversations outside of class, when you miss class, you need to read the book, do hw, etc, to catch up)
5. Understand that Academic Dishonesty of any kind is forbidden. Cheating or apparent cheating on exams will
result a zero or F for the class for all involved parties.
6. Activate i-mail, and check emails regularly, because I do send out reminders from time to time!

Campus Resources:
My office hour is not a repeat of lecture but an opportunity for me to answer your questions from class you attended, to
pick up old materials and handouts you didn’t get, and to have me verify your way of working out problems.
MMLC: Math Multimedia Learning Center (Liberal Arts 135) http://ic.arc.losrios.edu/~mmlc/
This is the place for students with strong self disciplines to go and start a new course on their own. Students teach
themselves the required materials with the aid of the book, computer software, and videotapes. Students also have access
to tutors as well as instructors in the Center. Students will be required to come and take tests at the Center, but homework
assignments are online and can be done elsewhere. Talk to me first!
LRC: Drop in Tutoring as well as Beacon Workshop (I will provide more details later on)
MESA: http://www.arc.losrios.edu/~mesa/ or contact Will Davis - [email protected] or (916) 484-8510.
Eservices (add, drop, final grade), i-mail, scholarships, etc, on ARC homepage: http://www.arc.losrios.edu/
Think positive! You can do this!
