We have been fortunate to receive a significant grant of funding at a time when it will be extremely beneficial. With the receipt of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant of $31 774.00, we are now able to complete the exterior of the building. We are laying the concrete paths for disabled access and building the verandah roof. Building The work on our building continues at a frenetic pace but all is good and we are running to time. Provided the weather is kind to us, the veranda and pathways should be completed in the next two weeks. The northern external wall will be painted; the internal painting in the Recreation Room is looking great. Our painters led by Bob Nunn are doing a professional job. Record attendance We broke a new record in attendance at our first social meeting for the year with 134 people attentively listening to Doctor Brian Kable on the issue of Men’s Health. Our Social meetings are proving to be our lighthouse. Thank you to the members who consistently give of their time to organise, cook, setup and dismantle the displays and restore the room to normal at the end of the day. Assistance in cleaning up after the storm Our fantastic men have done it again. We reacted to a request from Brisbane City Council for community organisations to assist in cleaning up debris after the heavy winds. A small number of our men cleaned up fallen branches in private yards of the homes of older/ disabled people across Morningside, Carina and Carindale. Thanks yet again for a great response. Volunteer assistance in running the Shed It is planned that the office of the shed will be opened four or five days a week after the official opening in April. There will be some set tasks to be completed each day. Such tasks could be: Monitor the men as they sign on for each session, collect session fees, issue and collect name tags to and from members, answer phone etc. If you are interested in volunteering some of your time and for further information, please contact me by phone or email. We will also require a “Storeman” to issue tools and materials for each practical session. The duties for this person will include monitoring the issue and return of tools, portable powered machinery etc. from the store. Again, if you are interested in this role please contact me now. There will be training sessions for each role in due course. We have good reason to be proud of our purpose built facility. We now have a responsibility to manage it so that we all can enjoy it for many years to come. Happy Shedding, Brian Wheeler 2 President Phone :0435 699 693Email: [email protected] Vol. 4 Number 2 Page 3 COMMUNIT Y PROJECTS After the Storm! A Community Services Officer from BCC sought the provision of urgent assistance to four residents of Carindale and Carina who were unable to clear storm debris from their own yards to the footpath for Council collection. Three intrepid Shedders—Brian Wheeler, Arthur Muhl and Graeme Smith set out to assess the extent of the work on Feb 5th. AS luck would have it, they happened to take a chain-saw, loppers, rakes and the like with them. Some two and a half hours later, the trio returned to the Shed and declared that the work had been done to the satisfaction of of the occupants and that all was well. NOW THAT CERTAINLY MADE A DIFFERENCE! Arthur Muhl Following a picture in last months Newsletter, here is a similar model lovingly created by Ken Fennel . Also on display was this magnificent painting by Dave Mayocchi, donated as a prize for our monster raffle. It depicts a scene in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia . Our Vision To provide a facility where men of all ages can feel comfortable and gather together to spend time socially, as well as in a practical manner, by participating in constructive endeavors that develop self esteem . WELFARE I have been making phone contact with men shed members over the past weeks inquiring of their wellbeing. Most of these contacts had not attended a men's meeting or workshop for six to eight months. Their initial response was " are you checking up on me" or something to that effect. Hey guys! Your Welfare Committee is not a policeman checking up on you and monitoring your movements because you have not attended monthly meetings or workshops for a period of time. Our major concern is that you are OK. Remember! Please have someone let me know if you are sick at home or in hospital or if someone else needs a phone contact, visitation or needs assistance. Your Welfare committee have a number of men shed members that live close to your area are keen to make contact with you visit you or assist you in whatever need you have where it is possible or practical. There will be times when you are away on an extended holiday, family reasons and the like. In some of these cases I may ask someone on our Welfare team to contact you. Elwyn Jackson Welfare Cocoordinator 07 31626587 or I can assure you our only concern for you is your wellbeing and not to check on you. You are all valued members in our men shed whether you attend meetings/ workshop each week, each month or every six months. 3 Page 4 Vol 4No 1 Lexiphiles (i.e., "lovers of words" you know . . . . like . . . you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish . . . or, I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger . .. . .. then it hit me . . . .etc.). There was no hard base parking near the tents which had already been assembled for us to claim one to set up our display, so naturally we parked on the immaculate lawn! Oh! Dear me, an ever watchful charming Police Officer, riding fast on a fancy Police bicycle arrived to move us on...well, we ladies got to him while the men frantically emptied the back of the vehicle. We three wives took photos of him first with one then two of us, praised his bike and did everything we could to delay his order to move on. Nice as he was, we all won, as the large loaded car was emptied in record time and driven off the manicured lawn, and he cycled on with a happy smile. The workshop will reopen on Tuesday 5 February in the Hamlyn-Harris pavilion. This will involve cleaning up and moving some equipment and stores to the new shed. There will computers and internet access in the recreation room. There are now 6 woodwork lathes. He praised Paul Land who spent many long hours leading in the finishing touches of the interior of the shed plus many helpers including new member Geoff Halter who fitted the plumbing. Brian stated that the Show Ground Trust are now charging the Shed rent for the use of the hall for monthly meeting. In previous years it has been at no cost, therefore he alluded that the management committee will consider an increase of entry fees for the Social meeting. Community Projects Graeme Smith. Guest speaker after lunch at 1pm was Dr. Brian Kable Topic: Men’s health He spoke about all aspects of men’s health; lifestyle, wellbeing, different cancers, cholesterol, diabetes, drinking, smoking, mental health (suicide) and this is common within one year of spouse’s death. He stated that men generally attend to their own health issues much less than women do. He said that it is important for groups like the Men’s Shed as this increases the awareness of issues. An interesting comment he made was that men are basically programmed to be less healthy than women because of their different chromosomes. In addition men generally do not complain, they take more risks and show their ‘masculinity’. Finally he said that men must see their GP’s and have regular check-ups.
