NURSERY CURRICULUM LETTER SPRING 2016 Dear Parents

NURSERY CURRICULUM LETTER
SPRING 2016
Dear Parents,
We hope you have enjoyed the Christmas holidays! In the coming half term children will be learning
about ‘Colour and Pattern. The aim of the topic is to allow children the opportunity to explore colour
and pattern and note similarities and differences in the world around them. This terms topics will
include:
Understanding of the World/PSED
The children will learn about colour and pattern in everyday objects and in nature. They will be
encouraged to notice patterns, describe them and identify colours. Children will participate in
activities exploring light and dark for example using a light box and torches in a dark tent. They will
have the opportunity to discuss their news weekly, talk about families and special
occasions/celebrations that arise. Every week a child will be picked to take Bobby and Bertie bear
home for a sleep over!
Communication and Language
The children will listen to stories about Elmer and use nonfiction books to find out more about
elephants. They will be given the chance to explore the use of puppets and act out stories and songs.
Every day the children will take part in a letters and sounds session. In addition we aim to continue
with a letter and key word which will be sent home in their books each week (older children only).
Expressive Art and Design
The children will have the opportunity to paint, collage and make Elmer the elephant using junk
modelling and construction toys. We will be using ICT packages such as Colour magic to gain mouse
control, click and colour Elmer. We will explore printing patterns and symmetry paintings. We will
perform nursery rhymes and experiment making different sounds with instruments and simple
patterns with drums and clapping.
Mathematics
This term we will be looking at counting objects up to 10, matching number and quantity and number
recognition up to 10. We will be sorting objects by colour and size and staff will encourage children to
use the correct vocabulary. Children will use toy elephants and bears to copy pattern cards and
continue a pattern themselves. Sorting colour bowls, different coloured playdough and water will be
placed in the nursery each week.
Physical Development
In the outside area we will move in different ways, practice travelling along, over and through
equipment safely. We will have opportunity to use bats, balls and hoops etc. to practice throwing,
catching and rolling. There will be circle games weekly.
Please continue to use our Wow certificates. Thank you for all your weekly £1 contributions to support
the nursery creative activities. Please note that all nursery contributions need to be handed into the
main office in a clearly named envelope.
Thank you for your support Mrs. K Barr and Mrs. R Kay
