Welcome to the May Public Health Information Briefing. The purpose of our monthly Briefings is to provide healthcare commissioners and planners with intelligence about population health in the City. Your local Public Health Intelligence web pages… You may not be aware of the many resources available on our website, so this month’s newsletter gives a flavour of the wealth of public health information and tools available. We hope that you will visit the site and make use of this in providing and commissioning health services in Southampton. The public health intelligence pages can be found at: http://www.southamptonhealth.nhs.uk/aboutus/publichealth/hi/ Our most recent resource is an interactive tool for producing population pyramids. This excel-based tool produces population pyramids for wards, localities and GP practices and compares the profile to that of the City as a whole and the national average. This is extremely useful background information when considering other data; for instance, this profile of the University practice shows how very different it is from the rest of the City. The tool also allows the user to look at how the population structure for localities and wards is forecast to change over the 2011 to 2018 period, which may help illustrate changes in demand for healthcare services in the future. p1 of 2 The population pyramid tool can be found on the new ‘City Profiles’ page of our website. In addition to our locally produced profiles, this webpage includes a national profiles section providing downloads of the Southampton profiles and links to their originating website. Just on this one page you can find profiles for our city on alcohol, sexual health, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health, end of life care and many others. A screenshot of the City Profiles web page is shown below and can be accessed at: www.southamptonhealth.nhs.uk/aboutus/publichealth/hi/profiles/ On the public health intelligence pages you will also find links to the Southampton JSNA, Annual Reports from the Director of Public Health as well as past editions of these newsletters and in-depth briefing notes on topics such as obesity and inequalities. Soon we will be adding a mapping resource page where you will be able to download popular maps such as Southampton ward boundaries and GP practice locations. We are developing our website all the time so if you have any suggestions for public health intelligence resources that you would like to be able to access via the website then please let us know (contact details below). We hope you have found this resource interesting and welcome your feedback and comments. Next month’s newsletter will launch our latest practice profiles.
