Andrew Smyrak, son of Dorothy Smyrak, was awarded President Obama’s
Volunteer Service Award. This award
recognizes Americans of all ages who
have volunteered significant amounts of
time to serve their communities. The
TEMS eighth-grader completed his volunteer work at a Boy Scout camp as a
counselor’s helper. Andrew received a
Volunteer Service Award Certificate
and a note of appreciation from President Obama. Andrew’s volunteer service makes him a role model for all young
adults.

In early February, Samantha
Donovan, Jason Rickenbacher, Marshall Neilsen, Alex Viar, Noah Leibowitz, Taylor Chen, Lauren Lee
and Samantha West represented
Timothy Edwards Middle School at
the Hartford Chapter, MathCounts
competition. It was quite a day of
math for our competitors. The T.E.
Team of Sam, Jason, Marshall and
Alex placed sixth against 29 regional
schools, earning T.E. an invitation to
the State MathCounts competition
in March. Noah Leibowitz had an
exceptional day, placing 19th individually out of the 240 competitors,
and also earning an invitation to the
state competition. Congratulations
to all our MathCounts participants
on a very fine effort.
Kindergarten students at Pleasant
Valley recently took a trip to the Lincoln
Theater at University of Hartford. It was
an exciting trip, since many of the
students had never been to a theater
before. The classes read a story and
completed several activities to prepare
for the show. Students enjoyed the
musical “Click, Clack, Moo,” and when
they returned to school, they compared
the musical to the book and looked for
similarities and differences.
