Writing and Reading Children will write a
variety of pieces of work covering different
genres: suspense, story writing, diary entries,
script writing and instructions. Grammar will be
taught alongside writing with the children being
given time to write for extended periods . The
topic is centred around a text - Michael
Morpurgo’s “Kenzuke’s Kingdom” - which the
children will read and use as a stimulus.
Science Children will explore the life
cycle of a plant in this topic. They will
explore the vocabulary linked. They
will be able to name the parts of the
plant, what plants need to grow and
why plants grow in certain areas. This
learning will occur around a number of
practical experiments.

Maths - Children will have opportunity to learn and
apply both mental and written methods in practical
and real life contexts.
A good knowledge of times tables is essential and we
would ask parents to support their child at home with
the learning of these.
This term, we will be focusing on geometry (angles,
shapes, position and direction), measurement,
perimeter and area, volume and prime numbers.

Geography Using maps, symbols , directions and grid
references, the children will explore how these tools would
assist them if they were castaway on an island.
Art Using “Kensuke’s Kingdom” as inspiration, the children
will design and paint seashells, explore the artist Hokusai,
create their own watercolour paintings and paint on silks.
DT Whilst on their educational visit, in groups, children will
create a life size shelter in the woods, orienteer around the
site and explore habitats and minibeasts.

RE - The RE curriculum lessons will explore
times and seasons, with discussion and

Music - The lessons will enable the children
to explore lyrics and melody following a

outdoor session, whilst gymnastics will be our
indoor focus.
PSHE - New beginnings and linking in with the
rules of the islands.
COMPUTING - Registering and setting up a blog.

based around the Space topic. Their creative
writing will focus on beings that could have
arrived from out of space. Grammar will be
taught alongside writing with the children being
given time to write for extended periods.
Science—Children will explore the state of the
moon, earth and sun. They will explore how day
and night occur and use this to explore shadows—how they change and move. They will also
consider the physics of flying and will attempt to
use forces to launch a space rocket. The vocabulary

Maths— Children will have opportunity to learn and apply
both mental and written methods in practical and real life
contexts. The focus will be on division and multiplication
and the longer more formal methods will be focussed on.
In maths the subjects covered will be, word problems, fractions mainly looking at equivalents, the grid method and
long multiplication methods as well as division including
the bus stop method. Tables knowledge and learning of
them will continue to be key to mental maths success.

on their space mission, they will research about their topics
and use graphical modelling to represent their findings.

Writing and Reading—Based around the
focus of the Tudors, there will be many
chances for extended writing. The children
will write an Obituary for Henry, they will write
humorous biographies for various Kings and
Queens of the time. Linked to the houses that
the children will make in DT, they will create an
advert for them, in the hope they could sell
them.
History —Using various sources,
children will explore key events in the life
of Henry VIII, including his wives, battles
and lifestyle. Using these sources they
will build up a picture of life, housing,
medicine, food and the ways of the Royals during Tudor Times. Tudor Dancing
will be the PE focus.

Autumn Term 2016
Creative Science— Keeping healthy is the focus this
term and children will learn what is important to be
healthy, this information will then be compared with
how the Tudors lived and links made.
Art/DT— The famous Tudor houses, wattle and doub,
with their black and white facades will be recreated .
Children will look at famous tudor portraits and recreate one of themselves in Tudor sytle. They will use
computing to create a symmetrical Tudor Rose with a
graphical modelling program.
Maths— Children will have opportunity to learn and
apply both mental and written methods in practical
and real life contexts. This term the focus will be on
the properties of triangles, the formal methods for
addition and subtraction, word problems and how to
extract information from graphs—pictograms and bar
graphs. Finally children will consider the properties of
3D shapes and their associated nets. A good
knowledge of times tables is essential.
French— French festivals, months of the
year, beginning to learn numbers to 60,
describing the weather, giving directions,
French cities.
RE - How do Christians’ beliefs effect the
way that they live their lives will be the
question discussed in RE.
Music— Children will focus on performing
Tudor songs and further explore the art of
performing together.
PE— Children will work on Tudor Dancing this
term and will Swim all term.
PSHE— This term children will consider Roles and
responsibilities, and how that worked with the
monarchy under Henry VIII.
Computing This term the children will use design
software to create a model of a Tudor house. The final
design will then be produced on a 3D printer.
