Program Coordinator of the A.B. Ed degree in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)
The UNC Chapel Hill School of Education (SOE) seeks an experienced professional scholar to serve as the first
Program Coordinator of the bachelor’s degree program in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS;
http://soe.unc.edu/hdfs/index.html), at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate, or Clinical Professor. The
position begins July 1, 2017. The appointment is full-time for a two-year term, with potential to renew for additional
terms.
The context: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, established in 1793 as the first public university in the
U.S., is a highly ranked research university, consistently listed in the top ten public universities. The School of
Education, established in 1886, is the oldest in the South. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, as well
as licensure programs. The A.B. Ed in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) is a is a pre-professional
major for undergraduate students interested in careers that will improve the lives of children and families across the
variety of contexts and cultures in which families live, learn and work. These careers are called "Helping Professions"
and might include education, public health, social work, health services, business services, counseling services, and
more. The new degree was approved by the state UNC system in 2016 and the first cohort of students will graduate
from the program in May 2018.
The position requires a minimum of five years of leadership experience in the education/research sector of Human
Development (especially one that honors psychological, sociological, economic, medical, education, cultural and
biological perspectives). Experience putting multidisciplinary theoretical and research backgrounds into practice as an
applied practitioner in the helping professions such as education, human resources, social work, physical therapy,
special education, counseling, community outreach, hospital services and the like is preferred.
This position is a unique opportunity to expand a newly developed program with vision and leadership. A key
responsibility is to grow the program by increasing the number of applicants and the size of each entering class while
at the same time preserving the quality of the HDFS program. This will involve raising the visibility and reputation of
the program regionally and nationally and making sure students receive a high quality experience.
Specific responsibilities include:








Advising the students in the program
Coordinating schedules and teaching courses each academic year
Managing internship placements with local organizations (e.g., human service agencies/hospitals/schools)
Providing guidance and assistance in job placement after graduation from HDFS
Recruiting, reviewing applications, and managing admissions with program faculty
Conducting ongoing program evaluation efforts and engaging in scholarship related to the program
Managing and nurturing a network of internship sites in the Triangle region
Maintaining relationships with partner academic units and institutes on campus, including the College of Arts
& Sciences, Allied Health, The Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, The School of Social
Work, etc.
Educational Requirements: A doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Studies, Education, Psychology or
related area of study is required.
