Here we are, pink-cheeked and perky, after an epic
250th birthday year in which we celebrated the city’s
fabled creativity and the beautiful Georgian
Theatre which has flourished here for a quarter of a
millennium. Six record-breaking productions, one
epic bank holiday party, hundreds of Bristolians
performing on our stage and above all, a city that
rose to the occasion and embraced its beloved
theatre with a passion that shook King Street!

And as you’d expect, 2017 is all about high quality
theatre and the spirit of invention which has
characterised the theatre’s best moments
throughout its history. This year, inspired by the
city’s overwhelming generosity in celebrating with
us, there is a special Bristolian flavour to the
programme. Great stories from a great city, in a
great theatre for the greatest audience we could
hope for. You.

That’s why Bristolian writing legend Jack Thorne
(creator of Skins and Harry Potter and the Cursed
Child) has penned a riotous and heart-warming
musical set in the Lockleaze adventure playground
in the 1970s (Junkyard, see p4). That’s why George
Mann (Pink Mist) is using stories from his Bristol
hometown in a powerful reworking of the
shattering classic Medea (the ultimate story of
cheated love). That’s why the great Julian Glover
(Game of Thrones) is returning to his favourite
theatre to play Julius Caesar (a newly-elected
statesman with a massive overdose of ego: ring any
bells?) alongside the graduating year of the Bristol
Old Vic Theatre School (a talent pool that has
previously included Patrick Stewart, Miranda
Richardson, Daniel Day Lewis, Olivia Colman and
Pete Postlethwaite).

Around this mouth-watering programme, we have
also strengthened our commitment to working with
young people and marginalised communities.
Using the transformative power of theatre, our
Engagement Team has projects popping up all
over Bristol designed to provide opportunities and
improve lives by sharing the creative spirit that
makes Bristol so special.
Back in King Street, our redevelopment has begun,
revealing the original Theatre frontage for the first
time, and discovering architectural treasures such
as the flying fireplace of Mr Gill, the theatre’s 1766
front door-keeper. These discoveries go hand-inhand with the brilliant news that we will become a
major heritage destination thanks to Heritage
Lottery Fund! An investment of over £2m will allow
us to animate our history on-site and digitise our
archive so that the extraordinary history of the
oldest working theatre in the English speaking
world can be shared with a new global audience.
And as if that wasn’t enough, we are also thrilled to
announce that Bristol’s best loved theatrical
story-teller Emma Rice (best known from Kneehigh
theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe) will join us to
celebrate Christmas with her exquisite adaption of
The Little Match Girl and Other Happier Tales (p14).
What treasures! What curiosities!
What an audience!

Who’d want to join in building a f***ing playground?
It’s 1979, rubbish is on the streets of Lockleaze, and growing
up is tricky for Fiz, Higgy and Ginger. Rick remembers what
it’s like to be a teenager. So when he decides to build a junk
playground, he’s pretty sure he has the charisma to get a
bunch of reluctant kids involved. He’s wrong.
Inspired by the true story behind the Lockleaze playground
known as ‘The Vench’, created over 30 years ago and still in
play today, Junkyard is a story about Bristol, for Bristol, from
BAFTA Award-winning writer and Bristolian Jack Thorne (This
Is England, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and Academy
Award-winning composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare
in Love).

Federico Fellini’s Oscar-winning La Strada is one of the alltime masterpieces of world cinema. This stage adaptation is
directed by Bristol’s own Olivier Award-nominee Sally Cookson
(Jane Eyre, Peter Pan) and boasts a beautiful new score by
Benji Bower with songs performed by an international cast
of actor-musicians.
La Strada (The Road) is a deeply impassioned tale of love and
loss, set against the backdrop of a country still reeling from
the devastating effects of World War II. We journey into the
heart of the Italian countryside where Gelsomina, full of the
innocent spirit of youth, is bought by Zampano, a travelling
street performer, to join his ‘strong man’ act. When the
mismatched pair stumble across a ragtag circus and a
daredevil tight-rope walker, Gelsomina finds herself caught
between the two men, not knowing which way to turn...

Moving between the dazzling lights of the circus and the bare
landscapes of rural Italy, this production of La Strada promises
to be a theatrical feast for all the senses.

For love, Medea sacrificed everything - only to suffer the
ultimate betrayal at the hands of her husband, Jason. As he
prepares to marry his new bride, Medea plots the ultimate
act of revenge to free herself and immortalise those she holds
dear, finally taking control of her own destiny.
Medea will weave Euripides’ ancient world together with the
modern day story of one single mother’s fight for the custody
of her children. As she begins to lose control of her future, an
old copy of Medea offers the inspiration she’s been searching
for...
Performed by an all-female cast and using the cathartic power
of song and movement from director George Mann (Pink Mist),
this retelling will attempt to reclaim Medea as a powerful
female character who fought against injustice, at all costs.

When Caesar returns to Rome a virtual dictator, Brutus and the
pro-democracy senators foresee the demise of the Republic in
the powerful hands of this celebrated general. As fear spreads
and conspiracy is sown, Caesar’s days are numbered.
Brutus wrestles with his conscience but, as measured
argument gives way to murder, he and the conspirators must
reckon with a new power led by Mark Antony and Caesar’s
nephew, Octavius. As the mob burns Rome, and armies clash
by night, the future of the Republic hangs by a thread. Can

while it burns she escapes into an enchanting world of magic

The inimitable Cheek by Jowl present The Winter’s Tale, one
of Shakespeare’s greatest, genre-defying plays. It traverses
comedy, romance and tragedy while balancing bold
characters and unity of plot with humour and pathos to create
the perfect tragicomedy.

Spanning 16 years and racing across Europe, from court to
country, from high tragedy to low comedy, this epic story tells
of the delusional and paranoid King Leontes and the
destructive power that his mistaken jealousy exercises over his

The danger lies not in machine becoming more like man
but in man becoming more like machine.
Like a giant graphic novel burst into life, 1927 invites you to
take a step through the looking glass into a dark and
fantastical tale of an extraordinary ordinary man. Blending
1927’s synthesis of handmade animation, claymation, live
music and performance, Golem is a dystopian fable for the
21st century, which cleverly and satirically explores one of the
great questions of the modern world – who or what is in
control of our technologies?
Golem is the follow up to 1927’s hit international shows The

Bristol Old Vic’s Engagement Team uses the transformative power of theatre to create participatory
opportunities for young people and the disenfranchised in Bristol and across the South West. Working
in partnership with communities, schools and other organisations, our team aims to affect change in the
lives of our participants by improving confidence, raising aspirations, developing communication and
self-expression skills, broadening team skills, encouraging reflective thought and developing creativity.
Thank you to all of our generous funders who make our work possible.
Young Company
Bristol Schools
Meadows to Meaders
Bristol Old Vic Young
Company is the largest regional
youth theatre, offering an
ongoing programme of weekly
workshops, rehearsals and
shows for over 350 young
people aged 5-25 years every
week. Following the success of
our January show The Love of
the Nightingale, presented at
the Bierkeller, we are working in
partnership with Melksham Oak
Community School to create a
show in April and St Brendan’s
Sixth Form College to create a
show in August.
Each week our Engagement
Team runs youth theatre
sessions in seven secondary
schools across Bristol, through
our Company Partner Schools
programme. Participating
schools benefit from weekly
theatre workshops in schools,
theatre industry events, free
tickets to Bristol Old Vic shows
and a performance of their work
on our Theatre stage.
We have been working with
Southmead residents to discover
and record memories of the
area’s history from 1930 to 1960
in partnership with Local
Learning, Bristol University,
Calling the Shots and Travelling
Kitchen. On Sunday 2 July the
Meadows to Meaders project
will culminate in a community
street performance about
Southmead’s history performed
by local community members
and students from Fonthill
Primary School and Orchard
Secondary School – save the
date!
Through our Playhouse
programme, we also work with
six Bristol primary schools to
bring a performance of a
specially written play to our
Theatre stage.
