Environmental Health
Services
Tri-County Health Department’s
Environmental Health programs focus
on preventing communicable disease and
environmental conditions that could be
harmful to a person’s health.
We provide restaurant inspections; food
safety training; sanitation inspections in child
care centers and public swimming pools;
industrial hygiene and occupational health
surveys; and land, air, water and waste water
quality assessments.
Environmental Health
Testing in the Home
Since some of these health hazards may also
be present in a home environment, TriCounty Health Department
offers testing services to
our residents in homes
and apartments, as well as
to businesses.
Many of the services listed
in this brochure are free to
residents of Adams, Arapahoe and
Douglas County. Some services do have a fee.
Mold Testing
“Fungi” is an all-encompassing term to
describe growths such as mold, mushrooms,
rusts, mildew, and yeast. Mold is primarily
a health issue for those allergic to it. We
can help answer questions
on mold, and provide
testing for a fee, but
it is oftentimes not
recommended
because if you can
see or smell mold,
you already know it is
present, and it is better
to eliminate it—
not do further testing.
Noise Monitoring
Exposure to high levels
of noise can cause
permanent hearing
damage. Tri-County
can monitor noise
levels in and around
a home or workplace
for comparison to
community and
Occupational Safety and
Health Administration
(OSHA) noise standards.
Sampling for Lead
Lead poisoning is the leading environmentally
induced illness in children. Elevated lead
in children, especially those under age 6,
can result in permanent damage, including
behavior or attention problems, reduced IQ,
difficulty in school, hearing problems, kidney
damage and growth retardation. Tri-County
can assess and sample your building for
possible sources of lead.
Sampling for Carbon
Monoxide and Combustion
Gases
In the home, high
levels of combustion
gases (including carbon
monoxide) can come
from back drafting of the
furnace, from portable gas
heaters, or from improper
venting of appliances.
These gases can cause headaches, nausea, and
irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, and
carbon monoxide can be fatal. We encourage
everyone to install carbon monoxide
detectors in their residence. Tri-County
Health Department can monitor a home
or workplace for combustion gases in nonemergency situations. In an emergency, leave
the building immediately and call 911.
Radon Monitoring
Radon comes from the natural break down
of uranium in soil, rock, and water and is
estimated to cause thousands of lung cancer
deaths in the U.S. each year. Radon can be
found almost anywhere, and Colorado has
higher levels of radon compared to the rest of
the nation. We can test your home for radon.
Sampling for Asbestos
Asbestos can be found in the home: roof felt
and shingles, heat source coverings, sprayed
on “popcorn” ceilings, water heaters, tiles,
and many other products. Asbestos, which
primarily causes lung cancer, can cause
problems when it is crushed or the surface of
the product is not sealed to prevent asbestos
fibers from escaping. Tri-County can advise
you as to when and what you should get
tested for asbestos.
